Winx Guineas Preview & Best Bets – 05/07/2025
It is Caloundra Cup Day at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. This meeting is the crown jewel of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, featuring the Group Three Winx Guineas for three-year-olds.
Here are the best bets for the Caloundra Cup Day at Sunshine Coast, including a selection in the Winx Guineas.
BEST BET: MISTER BIANCO
Race number 6 (Winx Guineas)
There would be no more fitting winner of the Winx Guineas this weekend than Mister Bianco, as he will carry the same silks as the star horse that this race is named after. The talented three-year-old completed a hat-trick of victories last month when he landed the TL Cooney (1350 metres) at Ipswich to put him on course for this assignment.
Winx won this race in 2015 en route to her impressive dominance on the track at the highest level. Mister Bianco is unlikely to go on the same path; however, he has shown the class needed to prevail at Group Three level, at the very least.
Andrew Mallyon rode Mister Bianco at Ipswich due to Michael Rodd’s injury. Mallyon gave the horse a brilliant ride, and he is likely to carry the same confidence in the Winx Guineas, as he knows how good his mount is.
The biggest danger to Mister Bianco will be Millie De Lune. She was set to feature in the Queensland Oaks earlier in the campaign but missed out on the Classic due to a shortage of prize money won. The filly is improving fast, but she faces a tough task against the opposite sex in the Winx Guineas.
SECOND BEST BET: HALF YOURS
Race number 8 (Caloundra Cup)
Half Yours is progressing into a stayer that looks bound for group success. In his last four starts, he has been successful twice and has finished a close second on two occasions. It is a sequence of results that has convinced trainer Calvin McEvoy to have a shot at the Caloundra Cup.
The ground is likely to be heavy at Sunshine Coast on Saturday and Half Yours proved two runs back at Rosehill Gardens that he relishes testing conditions. He produced one of his best career performances to score by over three lengths.
With a 54kg weight allocation, the four-year-old gelding is going to be receiving weight from most of his rivals in this lucrative contest. Ashley Morgan will have him handy from the barriers, and he will be kicking for home with 400 metres to go. He looks the one to beat.
BEST VALUE: FAR TOO EASY
Race number 7 (Glasshouse)
The highest-rated runner in this year’s Glasshouse is Far Too Easy, who will carry top weight of 60.5kg. He has earned just over $2.4 million in prize money in his career so far. He has a great chance of adding to that tally at Sunshine Coast on Caloundra Cup Day.
David McColm’s runner was well beaten on his latest appearance at Eagle Farm. However, that race was run on much faster ground than Far Too Easy enjoys. Both of his two victories this year have come on soft ground, so with rain forecast ahead of this meeting, expect a much better performance.
Warnie and The Inflictor are challenging for favouritism at the top of the betting, but the value lies with Far Too Easy to take advantage of a nice draw in barrier four.
