Caulfield Racing Tips 14 Oct — can Loud Charlie stay perfect here?
Caulfield Racing Tips 14 Oct — can Loud Charlie stay perfect here?
Loud Charlie has only been to Caulfield twice, but he’s made the joint look like home: two visits, two wins. Today he turns up again in a Benchmark 70 over 1575m with Mark Zahra aboard, and that little combo matters because Zahra and Lloyd Kennewell don’t just “get along” at this track, they’ve been properly lethal here together.
That’s the headline, but it’s not the whole card. We’ve got four races on a Good Caulfield turf, covering everything from raw two year old speed (1094m) to a proper staying test (2625m). These Caulfield racing tips are written for the busy punter who still wants a reason to bet, not a list of names. I’ll tell you where I’m confident, where I’m guessing, and where I’m leaving the wallet closed.
Caulfield — the setup
Good ground on the Caulfield turf generally rewards horses that can hold a position and kick at the right time. On a day like this, barriers matter because you don’t want to be doing it the hard way around the turn, especially in the 1575m and 1750m where races can be won or lost in the first 200m.
Limited course form across today’s fields, in the sense that most runners have only one or two Caulfield appearances. One exception is Porter, who’s had six goes here and kept finding the placings without landing a win. That’s usable evidence, not a highlight reel.

| Ben, Will & JD Hayes | 165 | 16 | 60 | 9.70 | 36.36 |
One more course angle worth banking: the Hayes stable has volume at Caulfield. They don’t have a freak win strike, but they place more than one in three here from 165 runners, which matters on a day where they’ve got multiple bullets across the program.
Race-by-race
Race 1: Magic Millions Debutant Stakes — 13:40, 1094m
The first question on the card is simple: do you side with the stable depth, or the one runner with exposed form? I’m leaning to Maalefushi. The form line reads “2” and in these early season two year old races, I’m happy taking the horse that’s already been to the races, heard the noise, and kept finding when asked.
Barrier 4 is a sweet spot at this trip and Luke Currie can be positive without having to panic early. If Maalefushi lands one off the fence and gets clear air before the bend, I expect the race experience to show when the new kids start wobbling at the 200m.
The danger is Royal Press from gate 1. The McEvoy camp doubles up in the race and if this one jumps clean and controls the rail, you might be chasing. A good inside draw is a weapon at 1094m, especially on a Good track where leaders can keep rolling.
Staking: Each-way Maalefushi. Keep it sensible, because these are lightly raced two year olds and chaos lives here.
Race 2: Beverly Rooftop (Bm70) — 14:15, 1750m
I’ll start with the contender because I think the set-up suits: Written Empire. The form is 4 and 1 last two, which screams “learning then delivering”. Craig Williams rides Caulfield as well as anyone and he hits the frame more than half the time here across a big sample, which is exactly what you want when you’re backing a horse that should be in the first four turning for home.
Draw 5 gives Williams options. If they overcook it early from wider gates, he can tuck in and stalk. If they dawdle, he can be closer without burning. Either way, the profile reads like a progressive three year old still climbing, not a handicapper going around in circles.
The danger is the Freedman pair, and if I have to pick one to threaten it’s So Royal. First up winners can sometimes flatter, but Damian Lane being engaged from barrier 10 is a hint they want to be decisive, not cute. The Freedmans also run a genuine Caulfield program: they win about one in five here and place a shade over two in five, and those are numbers you can actually lean on.
Staking: Win bet Written Empire. Small saver exacta Written Empire and So Royal if you’re playing multiples.
Race 3: Henley Homes (Bm70) — 14:50, 1575m
The market problem in this race is that plenty of punters will gravitate to the big names in the saddle, and that’s fair, but the horse that stands out to me on this track is Loud Charlie. He has won on both of his Caulfield runs. That’s not enough to declare him a “track specialist”, but it is enough to say he clearly handles the place and turns up to compete.
Then you stack on the human edge. Mark Zahra is a high-volume Caulfield rider and the Zahra and Lloyd Kennewell partnership at this track is the sort you respect: 7 rides here for 3 wins and 6 placings. That’s not a tiny two-ride coincidence, it’s a pattern of them placing their horses where they can win.
The draw is the other kicker. Gate 1 at 1575m lets Zahra hold the rail and control his own luck. If Loud Charlie finds the front or parks behind the leader, he’ll get every chance to pinch it before the closers unwind.
The danger is Puglia with Craig Williams. Puglia arrives off a very sharp stretch of form (5, 0, 1, 1, 1, 5) and he’s also won on his only Caulfield start. Again, one run is not a trend, but it tells you he won’t hate the circuit. If Williams gets the right cart into the straight, he can launch late and spoil the party.
Staking: Win bet Loud Charlie. If you want cover, save on Puglia to win.

Race 4: Tobin Brothers Celebrating Lives (Bm84) — 15:25, 2625m
This one reads like a stamina exam, not a sprint home. When you get older stayers over 2625m, the winning move often happens before the straight. The horse I want onside is Fernao. He’s not bringing a pretty last-start win, but he is the class rider in the race with Zahra taking the steer, and I like that intent at this trip because it can become a tactical war from the 800m.
Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald don’t flood Caulfield with runners, but they’ve won here before from a small base, and this placement looks like a horse being aimed at the right grade rather than thrown into the deep end. Barrier 3 gives Zahra the ability to settle close enough without dragging the horse out of its rhythm.
The danger is Wuddzz</strong from gate 1 with Craig Williams. He’s an old battler but the map screams “cheap run”. If the tempo backs off mid-race, the rail and the right jockey can turn 2625m into a 600m sprint, and Wuddzz won’t be the one doing the extra work.
Staking: Watch race with a small each-way nibble Fernao if you’re playing. I’m not going in heavy in a staying handicap without clearer recent form angles.
The plays
NAP: Loud Charlie (Race 3, 14:50). Two wins from two Caulfield runs is a strong comfort point, and the Zahra and Kennewell pairing at this track has delivered 3 wins and 6 placings from 7 rides together. From barrier 1, he gets the run other horses pay for.
Value: Maalefushi (Race 1, 13:40) each-way. In a debutant-heavy juvenile race, I’ll take the runner with race-day experience and a midfield gate that lets Currie make decisions rather than react to them.
Banker for multis: Written Empire (Race 2, 14:15) for a place. The Williams Caulfield profile holds up over a big sample and the horse’s recent 4 then 1 reads like a three year old heading the right way.
Each-way play: Maalefushi again, purely because it’s the one race where the unknowns are loudest and getting paid for running top three makes sense.
Course angle to remember: When the Freedmans bring progressive three year olds to Caulfield, respect it. They win about one in five here across a chunky sample, and they’re represented today by both Hierarchy and So Royal in Race 2.
Next time you see Zahra drawing low in these mid-week Caulfield handicaps, treat it like a warning label for the rest of the field.
