Overview
Hayley Saunders has a ride in all seven races at Charleville on Saturday, and her record here is the reason to start with her. She has won three of her ten rides at the track and finished in the first three seven times. Five of those mounts come from William Pugsley, and the pair have two wins and four placings from six runs together at this course.
The rest of the picture is a small-field western Queensland card: seven races from 1000m to 1625m, starting at 12:00PM local time and finishing with a 1625m Benchmark 65 at 4:10PM. These Charleville racing tips go race by race with a clear pick, the danger and what we would do with the money. Several horses have multiple nominations across the card, so check the final fields before you bet. The strongest view of the day sits in Race 2, where a last-start winner meets a field with little recent winning form.
What Charleville gives us today
Course form is thin but not empty. A handful of today’s runners have been to Charleville four times, and two of them stand out: Lucky Force has placed in all four of his visits for two wins, and Mistrey Emperor has two wins and three placings from four.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lucky Force | 4 | 2 | 4 | 50.0 | 100.0 |
| Mistrey Emperor | 4 | 2 | 3 | 50.0 | 75.0 |
| Il Toro d’Oro | 4 | 1 | 2 | 25.0 | 50.0 |
| Lady Dutton | 4 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 50.0 |
| Tough Judge | 3 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 66.7 |
| Turnstar | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 25.0 |
Four of today’s jockeys have five or more Charleville rides, and the gap between the top two and the rest is wide.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hayley Saunders | 10 | 3 | 7 | 30.0 | 70.0 |
| T Banks | 19 | 3 | 12 | 15.8 | 63.2 |
| Darren Evans | 20 | 2 | 6 | 10.0 | 30.0 |
| R Tilley | 12 | 1 | 2 | 8.3 | 16.7 |
The jockey list matters more than usual on a card like this. Saunders and Banks between them ride in all seven races, and their place rates are more than double those of the next two riders. When the form between two horses is close, the booking is a reasonable tiebreaker.
On the training side, G L Bignell and William Pugsley are the two names that matter.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| William Pugsley | 16 | 4 | 10 | 25.0 | 62.5 |
| G L Bignell | 19 | 5 | 11 | 26.3 | 57.9 |
| Monique Gavin | 10 | 1 | 4 | 10.0 | 40.0 |
| Vivian Jones | 22 | 2 | 7 | 9.1 | 31.8 |
| W P Baker | 17 | 2 | 4 | 11.8 | 23.5 |

Charleville race by race
Race 1: (Bm45), 12:00PM, 1000m
Plea comes into the opener off a win, and that is more than most of this field can say. The last three months have produced two wins and four placings from six runs, and one of two visits to Charleville ended in a win. The catch is the 65kg top weight, which is a lot to carry over a sprint even in a Benchmark 45.
Lady Dutton is the danger: third last time, a win and three placings from four recent runs, and T Banks riding for G L Bignell, a combination that has placed six times from nine runs together here. Lady Dutton also meets Plea 2.5kg better. Win bet on Plea, with Lady Dutton the saver.
Race 2: (Bm65), 12:40PM, 1000m
Does Transceltic have enough in hand to carry 66kg? The form says yes. He has won two of his last three, placed in all three, and both of his Charleville runs ended in the first three, one of them a win. Saunders and Pugsley team up again, and their record together at this track is two wins from six.
Won For Vicki is the one with the profile to beat him. He also won last start and carries 5kg less, and his form line of 311411 shows a horse who has been in the first three in five of his last six. If Transceltic gets caught wide, the weight could tell late.
The rest of the field has questions. Kat Chinna won last start, but that was the only time in the first three from three runs lately, Dusan has two placings and no wins from four recent runs, and Za Hidden Dragon has finished in the first three just once from four. None of them has the recent strike rate of the top two. We want to be with the in-form top weight, and a quinella with Won For Vicki covers the obvious danger. Win bet on Transceltic.
Race 3: (Bm55), 1:20PM, 1200m
This is the weakest betting race on the card. Pins And Needles ran second last start and has a win and three placings from six runs over the past three months, the most consistent profile among the declared runners. Two Charleville runs produced nothing, though, so the track is a question mark.
Dreyfus has the course form she lacks: he won one of his two runs here, and Banks rides. His recent form is patchier, with one win from five runs lately. Small each-way on Pins And Needles if you must play. Otherwise, watch it.
Race 4: Hcp (C4), 2:00PM, 1200m
Two of the better recent profiles on the card meet here. Malarina won last start, has won one of two Charleville runs, and Darren Evans rides for Monique Gavin. Boss Bandit has two wins and four placings from five recent runs, but he was seventh last time and has managed one placing from three runs at this track.
That makes Malarina the pick: in form now, proven on the track, and at 61kg carrying less than the Gavin stablemate Zouchase. Tough Judge is the each-way angle at 54.5kg: two placings from three Charleville runs and Saunders in the saddle. Win on Malarina, and a small place bet on Tough Judge.
Race 5: Open Plate, 2:50PM, 1000m
Mistrey Emperor is the closest thing to a course specialist in this race. Four runs at Charleville have produced two wins and three placings, and he has won two of his three runs over the past three months. Saunders and Pugsley combine again, and with Born Fearless and Kat Chinna scratched, the field is down to a handful.
The danger is Mon Pierre, who won last start, though his only Charleville run ended in eighth. Mistrey Emperor carries 3kg less than Mon Pierre and has the stronger form. He is the banker for multis, and a straight win bet.
Race 6: Open Plate, 3:30PM, 1400m
Turnstar grinds; Lucky Force loves this track. Which profile wins decides the race. Turnstar has been the most productive horse on the card lately, with three wins and five placings from eight runs, and he won last start. His Charleville record is the weakness: one placing from four runs.
Lucky Force goes the other way. He hasn’t won in four recent runs, but every one of his four Charleville starts has ended in the first three, two of them wins. T Banks rides for Bignell. Deciduous also brings solid recent form, with two wins from six runs lately, but has not placed in three runs here.
We side with Turnstar‘s current form for the win and take Lucky Force each-way. If the track form holds, the each-way bet pays; if Turnstar keeps winning, the win bet does.
Race 7: (Bm65), 4:10PM, 1625m
The last race is the longest, and weight matters more over 1625m. Hi Frank gets in with 53kg, the lightest of the declared runners, and Saunders rides for Jon Taylor. He has a win and two placings from four recent runs, and his form line has been steady rather than spectacular.
Invincible Red, at 62kg, is the one we fear. He won one of his two Charleville runs and has finished in the first three twice from five starts lately, though he hasn’t won in that time. Voldemort was second last time but has one placing from four runs at this track. Il Toro d’Oro is the other one with Charleville experience, a win and two placings from four runs here, but one placing from six recent starts says the form has gone off. Hi Frank is a win bet, and Invincible Red goes in any exacta.

Where the money goes
NAP: Transceltic (Race 2, 12:40PM). Two wins from his last three, placed at both Charleville runs, and the jockey and trainer who do best at this track. The top weight is the only knock.
Value: Malarina (Race 4, 2:00PM). A last-start winner who has already won here gets less weight than the stablemate in the same race. That deserves more respect than a C4 handicap usually gets.
Banker: Mistrey Emperor (Race 5, 2:50PM). Two wins from three starts lately and two from four at Charleville, in a field cut down by scratchings. The safest leg for a multi.
Each-way: Lucky Force (Race 6, 3:30PM). Four runs at Charleville, four placings. Whatever his recent form says, this is a horse who turns up here.
Course angle: Hayley Saunders rides in every race, wins three in ten at Charleville and places seven times in ten. Transceltic, Mistrey Emperor and Hi Frank are her best chances today.
If Saunders keeps landing Pugsley’s runners at this rate, the Charleville form guide will start with her name every meeting.
