Doomben Racing Tips 5 Oct 2026 — can Waller set the meeting alight?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

Doomben, 5 October: one stable everywhere, one track that punishes hesitation

C J Waller has a proper hand in this Doomben card. Not just “a runner or two” either, he’s dotted through key races where barriers and tempo actually matter, and that’s where you can make (or lose) your day. The trick at Doomben is you don’t get long to recover from a bad spot: over the mile to the 1300m start points, you want a horse that can hold a position, or at least a rider who won’t wait for a miracle gap.

You’ll get my Doomben racing tips race-by-race below, but the headline is simple: I’m leaning into the proven Doomben operations. Waller’s long-run record here is strong enough to trust, and the Ben Thompson bookings across the meeting look more like intent than convenience. Five races on turf, a stack of maidens early, then a Benchmark 68 to finish where track position becomes the whole story.

One note on pricing: the odds feed wasn’t available at the time of writing, so this is a pure form and setup read rather than a “shop the price” column.

Doomben, the setup today

Going info wasn’t supplied with the racecard, so treat early races as your guide to how much the inside lanes are holding up and whether leaders are getting cheap sectionals. Doomben can race like a chessboard when the tempo drops, especially around 1300m and 1500m, so watch who controls the first 400m.

Course form is fairly thin across most of these fields, which is typical for maiden-heavy midweek style cards. Where we do have something meaningful, it’s more about jockey and stable reliability than “track specialists”.

Race-by-race Doomben predictions

Race 1: Gallopers Sports Club Mdn Plate — 12:46, 1815m

Ancestral looks the one you can build the early part of the day around. The Chris Waller polish plus Ben Thompson at Doomben is a pairing I’m prepared to trust on a day where a lot of these maidens feel like they’re still learning their job. Barrier 6 is fine over this trip: Thompson can land midfield with cover and make it a staying grind from the 700m rather than a stop start sprint home.

His recent form line reads like a horse on the edge of breaking through. In the last 90 days he’s run three times and hit the frame twice, which is what you want in these 4yo+ maidens where plenty have had their chance and stopped improving.

The danger is Dual Mastery. That’s more about profile than raw numbers: he’s already placed at Doomben on his only visit, and he draws to get a clean run in the first half of the race. If the tempo dies mid-race and it turns into a dash from the 450m, he’s the one who can pinch it by being in the first three turning for home.

Staking: Win bet Ancestral. Exacta saver Ancestral with Dual Mastery if you want something small running in the background.

Race 2: Become A Brc Member Mdn Plate — 13:21, 1815m

Here’s the puzzle: do you take the “right gate, right stable” runner, or do you take the horse that’s simply shown the most? I’m siding with Great Times Ahead because barrier 1 at 1815m is a weapon if the horse can relax, and Waller doesn’t usually waste inside draws at this trip.

He’s had only two runs in the last 90 days, but he’s already placed once and his average finish sits around the mark you’d expect for a maiden about to graduate. The other thing I like is the rider: Ben Thompson rides Doomben as well as anyone on this card, and he’ll know whether to hold the rail or angle one off and avoid being boxed.

Spirit Of Torque is the danger. He’s the hardened campaigner in this race and if it turns into a war from the 700m, that toughness can count. The knock is his Doomben record across two visits: nothing to hang your hat on, just enough to say the track hasn’t magically lifted him.

Staking: Great Times Ahead to win. If you’re playing multiples early, this is a sensible anchor leg.

Race 3: Ladbrokes Tote Win +10% In October Mdn Plate — 13:56, 1312m

The market often overreacts to “nearly” horses in these 1300m maidens, but Aristocratic Girl has the kind of consistency that wins you races when others find ways to lose. She’s been around the mark repeatedly, and at Doomben she’s placed twice from three runs, which is at least a sign she handles the shape of the track.

Barrier 9 isn’t perfect, but at 1312m you’ve got time to slide in and find a back. The key is not making the move too late: leaders can get away if you give them a 200m head start.

The Aviator is the danger because he’s been there often enough to have the Doomben map in his head. Four runs here and he’s placed twice, which matters more than “yet to win” at this stage. M Rodd is also a plus, because he’s one of the few on the day who can make a messy race look simple.

Staking: Each-way Aristocratic Girl. If the track starts favouring on pace runners in the first two, trim that to a small win only and respect The Aviator.

Race 4: Spring Racing Carnival Book Now Mdn Plate — 14:31, 1312m

This is the best betting race on the card because the profile is clean and the runner I want is staring you in the face. Astern Effort keeps turning up and running well without getting the job done, but the course record says he’s comfortable here: two Doomben runs for two placings. That’s not a “specialist” stamp, it’s simply proof he runs his race at this venue.

From gate 4 he should lob in the first half-dozen, and that matters around this circuit. If they overdo it up front he can stalk and peel. If they crawl, he can hold a spot close enough to sprint. Jace Mcmurray is also a very reliable Doomben rider across a proper sample of rides, and he’s not afraid to take the run when it’s there.

The danger is Budda Bar, the lightly raced 3yo who might have more improvement than anything else in the field. He draws 6 and gets D Moor, and if this turns into a sit and sprint, that “untapped” angle can beat the honest older horse.

Staking: Win bet Astern Effort. If you’re playing a same-race multi, Astern Effort top 2 with Budda Bar top 3 is the sensible way to express it.

Race 5: Xxxx Gold (Bm68) — 15:06, 1476m

The closer is where the meeting’s theme comes to the surface: do you trust the horse with the right course footprint, or do you trust the horse arriving with the best current form? I’m taking Indigo Star because he’s already won at Doomben and backed it up with another placing here. Two runs at the track, a win and a second cheque, and that’s enough to say he enjoys the place.

He does have gate 10, so it’s not a “sit behind the leader and pounce” job. But this is the type of race where class runners can roll forward and sit outside the lead without burning too much fuel, especially if the inside isn’t an advantage on the day. Over the last 90 days he’s had four runs, won one, and placed in three, which is the best recent profile of any horse I want to be with late.

Smoke On The Water is the danger because he brings the sharpest recent winning form line into the race on paper (70151) and M Rodd is a major positive. The question is whether he can cross cleanly from barrier 8 and control his own destiny. If he’s forced to work, Indigo Star becomes the one finishing over the top.

Staking: Win bet Indigo Star. If you want insurance, saver on Smoke On The Water to win, because he’s the one who can pinch it by controlling the speed.

The plays

NAP: Astern Effort (Race 4, 14:31). Two runs at Doomben for two placings tells you he turns up here, and gate 4 gives Mcmurray every chance to keep it simple.

Value: Aristocratic Girl (Race 3, 13:56) each-way. She’s placed twice from three Doomben runs and she keeps finding the line in races where others throw it away.

Banker for multis: Great Times Ahead (Race 2, 13:21). Inside draw at 1815m, Waller yard, Thompson riding a track he knows better than most. That’s a safe enough profile to anchor a small multi.

Each-way play: Aristocratic Girl again, simply because she’s the most reliable “run her race” type in the sprint maiden block.

Course angle to keep using: when you’re torn, side with the stables that repeatedly place their horses at Doomben. T J Gollan hits the frame 115 times from 265 Doomben runners, and Waller has 50 placings from 131. That’s not a hot streak, it’s habit.

Keep an eye on how wide they can win in the first three races. If the outside lanes are fine, the late runners drawn wide become far less scary next meeting.
