Newcastle Racing Tips 6 Oct 2026 — can the track fancies deliver again?

There’s a little Newcastle theme I keep coming back to on this card: the horses that have already handled this circuit are the ones you can actually trust to do it again. Plenty of these fields are made up of maidens and lightly raced types, so when you get a runner that’s already placed in both visits here, or a sprinter that’s won on its only start at the track, that’s not something I want to ignore.

We’ve got five races on the Newcastle (turf) meeting today, mostly centred around the 984m and 1367m trips with a 1640m maiden to kick things off. Below are my Newcastle racing tips with a clear view on where I’d bet, where I’d save, and which races I’d rather watch than pretend I’m confident.

Newcastle — the setup

Going and rail are unknown from the feed, so I’m treating this as a typical Newcastle turf day: pace and barriers matter more at the short trips, and you generally want to be within striking distance rather than spotting them five lengths and hoping the gaps appear.

Limited course form across today’s fields. Only a couple have been here often enough to talk in real trends, so I’ll lean on race shape, barriers and who’s been knocking on the door rather than pretending 1 from 1 makes a “track specialist”.

Jockey angle worth knowing: Regan Bayliss rides Newcastle well, winning 3 of 16 here and hitting the frame 7 times. Dylan Gibbons has plenty of rides at the track too (30), and consistently pops up in the placings.

Trainer angle worth knowing: Nathan Doyle is one of the reliable Newcastle stables, with 47 runners here for 10 wins and 26 placings. Kris Lees is the volume trainer on this circuit (80 runners), and while the win strike is more modest, the depth of sample counts for plenty.

Race-by-race: Newcastle predictions

Race 1: New Era Technology Mdn Plate — 13:50, 1640m

Made In Italy looks like the one you can build around because the profile screams “maiden about to happen”. He’s been around the mark for ages (323325) and he’s drawn gate 3 to land right on the bunny’s back instead of giving them a start. K McEvoy is a proper booking for this grade, and at Newcastle he’s not dominant but he does enough right: 22 rides for 2 wins and 9 placings.

The quieter but important push is the course evidence: Made In Italy has placed in both Newcastle runs. That’s not a trend I’m going to slap a percentage on, but it is a very clean signal in a field where many are either wide in the draw or still learning how to finish off.

The danger is Gold Cup. He’s another one who keeps turning up and running well (44-323), and like the top pick he’s also placed in both Newcastle visits. The knock is the draw (14). If they run along, he can still win, but he’ll need a fair bit to go right early.

Staking: Win bet Made In Italy. Small saver on Gold Cup if you’re worried about a sit-sprint where the wide runner can cart into it late.

Race 2: Nzb Mdn Hcp — 14:25, 1367m

Here’s the puzzle: does Samaka keep finding one better, or does he finally get the race run to suit? Off 233 he’s the clear “most reliable” runner, and the booking of C Schofield tells you they’re not messing around. Schofield rides Newcastle well enough to trust the decision, with 28 rides here for 4 wins and 11 placings.

The one thing I do want to be upfront about is recent form stats: Samaka doesn’t have a 90-day body of results in the feed (0 runs recorded in that window), so I’m leaning on the racecard trajectory and the stable intent rather than pretending I’ve seen a stack of current figures.

The horse I’m most worried about is Zousari from gate 1. He’s not winning many, but he keeps giving you something at this track: placed in 2 of 3 Newcastle runs. From the inside draw with J Taylor, he’ll get every favour, and if Samaka wants to be held up for one run, Zousari can pinch a break on them.

Staking: Samaka to win. If you’re playing quinellas, keep Zousari in the main pair because the map is friendly.

Race 3: Horsepower Feeds And Supplements Mdn Hcp — 15:05, 984m

This is the one sprint on the card where I’m happiest to be blunt: I want the horse with upside and tactical speed, and that’s Lucsain. He’s only had the one run and he ran second, which usually reads as a horse that can take natural improvement and win its maiden quickly. J Ford takes the ride and from barrier 8 he’ll have to make a decision early, but over 984m I’d rather be in clear air than jammed away on the fence praying for luck.

Most of these have question marks. The older debutant (All Day Sucker, 7yo) could run well fresh, but you’re betting on a profile rather than a pattern. Lady Talea has been up and around the money without being able to put them away, and that’s the risk: she gives you a place run more often than a winning one.

If you want a proper spoiler, it’s Tickelova from gate 1. A runner drawn like that in a 984m maiden can improve out of sight just by holding a spot and letting others work around them, and Dylan Gibbons is good at that type of ride.

Staking: Lucsain win bet if the market stays fair. If he gets smashed, don’t force it; take a smaller win stake and save with a small place on Tickelova.

Race 4: Tab (Bm68) — 15:40, 984m

The market will probably land on the recent winning form, and I’m not here to talk you out of it: Just Awesome is the best bet on the card. He comes in off a sequence that reads like a horse that’s found the right grade (3-41551) and he draws gate 6 where Leeshelle Small can keep him out of trouble and rolling.

There’s also a neat Newcastle note: Just Awesome won on his only start at this track. One run doesn’t make him a course specialist, but it does tell you the place doesn’t bother him, and that matters in short sprints where some horses just never look comfortable.

The danger, for me, is Generous Harry from barrier 1. He’s the map horse, plain and simple. He’s also won on his only Newcastle start, and his overall form (166171) says he’s a hard horse to get past if you let him control the race.

This is where I’d rather trust the progressive four-year-old than the older sprinter with the big weight: Just Awesome carries 128.9, Generous Harry 134.4. Over 984m, weight can bite when they sprint off the corner.

Staking: Win bet Just Awesome. Exacta saver with Generous Harry running second if you like to insure the map.

Race 5: Dailey Family Funerals Midway Hcp (C1) — 16:20, 1367m

Two horses bring totally different energy to this, and it makes the race. Lawless Lucy draws barrier 1 and shapes as the horse that gets the cheapest run of the lot. She’s in form (3812), she’s got Schofield again, and she’s won on her only Newcastle start. That last bit is only a single data point, but it lines up with the map: she should get every chance to repeat it.

Slander is the one with upside. He’s three, he’s lightly raced (21), and Nathan Doyle places them well at this track. Doyle’s Newcastle record is strong over proper volume: 47 runners for 10 wins and 26 placings. Ashley Morgan can’t buy a Newcastle win (0 from 19 here), but he does hit the frame regularly enough to ride with confidence, and this colt might just be a touch better than the grade.

The risk horse is Prince de Vega. The form line (232134) says he’ll be thereabouts, but he’s drawn 8 and could be forced to do work if he wants a spot.

Staking: Lawless Lucy each-way. If the price gets short, trim the win and keep the place. Small saver win Slander because the ceiling looks higher.

The plays

NAP: Just Awesome (Race 4, 15:40). He’s a progressive sprinter in a grade that suits, and he’s already proven Newcastle doesn’t bother him with a win on his only start here.

Value: Lawless Lucy (Race 5, 16:20) on an each-way ticket. Barrier 1 plus a rider who consistently rides this track well is the kind of setup that gets underpriced late, not overpriced.

Banker for multis: Made In Italy (Race 1, 13:50) as a top-two style anchor. He’s been living in the placings and has placed in both Newcastle runs, which is more comfort than most of these maidens offer.

Each-way play: Lawless Lucy again, simply because the draw gives you options. If she leads, she can pinch it; if she takes a sit, she saves ground and gets the last crack.

Course angle: When Nathan Doyle turns up with a live one at Newcastle, I pay attention. He trains Slander and Cool Summer Nights on the card, and his long-run Newcastle numbers stand up to scrutiny.

Keep an eye on how the inside lanes play over the 984m races; if the fence is the place to be, you’ll want to remember it next time this circuit throws up a similar sprint-heavy program.
