Eagle Farm Racing Tips 15 July — can Swing State go on with it?

Eagle Farm Racing Tips 15 July — can Swing State go on with it?

Swing State is the one horse on this little Eagle Farm card who actually suggests something, rather than merely hopes something. He’s a 3yo with a sharp recent strike, he’s already proven he handles the big, roomy track, and he lands in a race where the map looks kind enough to let Ben Thompson ride him like the best horse. That’s the hook today.

We’ve only got three races to work with here, all on turf, and two of them are 2yo maidens at 1094m. That means plenty of guesswork, a fair bit of “who improves second and third-up” energy, and a strong temptation to keep stakes sensible until we see the ring and the parade. Still, there are edges if you’re willing to be decisive: one progressive 3yo in the last, one or two with a bit of course evidence, and a jockey who rides Eagle Farm like he owns the place.

Let’s get into the Eagle Farm racing tips and make the day pay.

Eagle Farm — the setup

Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have only one or two starts at Eagle Farm, so treat any “track record” as a reference point, not a badge of honour.

Where the course numbers do matter is the human side. Ben Thompson’s got serious volume here: 115 rides at Eagle Farm for 22 wins and 52 placings. That’s a rider who understands when to go early on this track and when to just wait for the straight to open up.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Ben Thompson 115 22 52 19.13 45.22
Jace Mcmurray 54 8 25 14.81 46.30
Jasper Franklin 37 6 14 16.22 37.84
Chelsea Baker 58 3 13 5.17 22.41

Trainer-wise, Tony Gollan’s Eagle Farm record is as bankable as it gets in Queensland metro terms: 198 runners here for 26 wins and 87 placings (13.13% win, 43.94% place). When he rolls multiple youngsters into a midweek program, you take the intent seriously.

Race-by-race: Eagle Farm predictions

Race 1: Gallopers Sports Club Mdn Plate — 12:36, 1094m

Threeeyedwitch looks the natural “this is my race” horse. She’s already put two 2nds on the page (form 22), and that’s the profile you want in these 2yo maidens when half the field is either debuting or still learning what the job is. She’s drawn 10 which isn’t a gift, but Eagle Farm’s long straight gives a sensible rider time to build momentum instead of panicking at the 600m.

The danger I keep coming back to is Sniper Boom from barrier 1. He’s had plenty of chances on paper (form 330037), but he’s also placed on his only Eagle Farm run (finished 2nd here) and the inside draw at 1094m can turn an honest young horse into a really annoying one to get past. Over the last 90 days he’s had 3 runs for 1 placing, so it’s not a raging winning trend, but it’s enough to say he’s not going awful either.

If you want a third name for wider multiples, Diamond Impact comes from a stable that does well at this track (Corey and Kylie Geran win 25% of their Eagle Farm runners off 12 starts), and he’s got a kinder gate than some of the other unknowns.

Play: Win bet Threeeyedwitch. Save quinella with Sniper Boom if the market lets you.

Race 2: Mekka Raceday On Sale Now Mdn Plate — 13:11, 1094m

Here’s the puzzle: do you take the exposed form from the few with a run under the belt, or do you side with stable intent and rider bookings in a race full of blank form lines?

I’ll side with Queen Olympias. She’s already run 2nd (form 2), and in these juvenile maidens that single clean effort often carries more weight than a pile of “maybe” from debutants. Barrier 8 is workable, and she doesn’t need to be a star to win a race like this, she just needs to hold her level while others improve in fits and starts.

Maria Clara is the obvious danger. She’s also shown something (form 3) and her only run in the last 90 days resulted in a placing. But she’s marooned in barrier 16 which screams “cover and luck”, and at 1094m you can get stranded wide and never land a punch.

A note on the Gollan trio (Boonie Boom, Crypto Chick, Exceed The Sale): Gollan’s Eagle Farm record is strong over proper volume (198 runners, 43.94% in the placings), so if the market comes hard for one of his, take the hint. I’m not guessing which one without prices, but I’m also not pretending it doesn’t matter.

Play: Small win bet Queen Olympias. If a Gollan runner is heavily backed late, save on that one only.

Race 3: Ladbrokes Blackbook Plate (C3) — 13:46, 1750m

The market can do what it likes, I’m with Swing State. He’s the progressive profile in the field (form 43121), and he’s one of the rare runners today with more than a single Eagle Farm reference point: he’s had two goes here for a win and a place. That’s not “specialist” territory, but it is enough to say the track holds no fears.

What really sells him is the current form line. Over the last 90 days he’s had 4 runs for 2 wins and he’s placed every time. That’s momentum you can bet into. Ben Thompson rides Eagle Farm as well as anyone in this jockey room (115 rides here, 22 wins, 52 placings) and from gate 6 he can decide whether to sit handy or just park one off the fence and let the race unfold.

Our Smokeshow is the danger because the trainer angle is real. Todd Pollard doesn’t just “go okay” at Eagle Farm, he wins 4 of his 9 runners here and places more than half of them. Our Smokeshow has only been here once and ran 3rd, so you can argue he improves with that look at the track. Over the last 90 days he’s gone 2 runs for 1 placing, which suits the “about to land one” vibe.

Underneath, Vacillation keeps running into a cheque without landing the win (223346), and Harley Charlie has the 1750m shape on his side if it turns into a sit-sprint (he’s been around the mark in similar grade), but I’m not making them the main bet when Swing State brings both form and course comfort.

Play: Win bet Swing State. Exacta saver Swing State over Our Smokeshow if you’re playing exotics.

The plays

NAP: Swing State (Race 3, 13:46). Two wins from his last four and he hasn’t missed a place in that stretch. Add a win and a place from two Eagle Farm visits and it reads like a horse who turns up and does his job.

Value angle: If the market drifts on Sniper Boom (Race 1) because people are scared off by the form string, I’ll take the other side. He’s placed on his only Eagle Farm run and barrier 1 gives him every chance to pinch a spot again.

Banker for multis: Swing State as your anchor. It’s the one race where we’re not throwing darts at 2yo development curves.

Each-way shape: Our Smokeshow (Race 3) if the price is right. Pollard’s Eagle Farm strike rate is elite off a real sample (9 runners, 4 winners), and the horse has already run 3rd on his only start here.

Course angle to keep: Ben Thompson isn’t just “in form”, he’s consistently effective at Eagle Farm over a long stretch of rides. When he lands on the runner with the best recent profile, treat it as intent, not coincidence.

Next time Pollard turns up here with something that’s already had a look at the track, don’t wait for everyone else to catch on.
