Grafton Racing Tips 15 July — can Dunn land another?

Grafton racing tips, 15 July: the angle I can’t ignore

If you’re trying to solve Grafton, start with the obvious and then decide whether you want to bet against it. M J Dunn turns up with a proper hand and, at this track, that stable doesn’t just “go okay” it regularly decides the day. Dunn has 51 runners logged at Grafton for 14 winners and 34 placings, which is a volume-based edge, not a cute little 1-from-1 story. He’s also got the right riders around him: Andrew Bullock has only three rides here but he’s won two of them and placed in all three, while N Rawiller has four rides for four placings which tells you he sees the place well.

We’ve got four races on the card, all on turf, and they’re varied enough to give you a couple of different ways to play it. There’s a messy sprint maiden where barriers matter, a staying maiden where the “big city” stables can simply outclass them, then a genuinely interesting 2400m race where the best betting push lives, and a 1200m handicap that looks like a speed and map problem. I’m writing these Grafton racing tips like I’d send them to a mate: direct, evidence-backed, and with an actual plan at the end of each race.

Grafton — the setup

Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two starts at Grafton, so I’m not handing out “track specialist” labels lightly. Where it does matter, I’m leaning on two things: (1) stables and riders with meaningful history here, and (2) horses whose recent form line suggests they’re ready to peak.

One horse on the card does bring a real little emerging pattern at the track: Rock The Machine has three runs here and has placed in all three, including a win. That’s the kind of profile I’ll respect at a country circuit where some horses simply travel and corner better than others.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Crown Hotel Motel Country Boosted Showcase Mdn Plate — 12:29, 1094m

Funky Cold Medina is the one I want onside early. In a maiden sprint like this, I’ll take the horse who’s already knocking on the door and can land in a spot, and his form line screams “ready”: 6-3-2-3-2. From gate 5, Yvette Lewis can keep it simple, hold a position, and let the horse build from the bend rather than needing luck threading through tired legs.

The dangers here come in two different flavours. Kobi Express (gate 3, gets Grace Palmer) looks like the type who can pinch a break if the race turns tactical, and the draw gives her every chance to be in the first four without burning fuel. On the other end, you’ve got raw, lightly raced upside: Legenderry and Machecoul are two-year-olds drawn 1 and 9 from the Dunn yard. I don’t need to pretend I know their ceiling off a blank form line, but I do know Dunn’s Grafton record means you don’t dismiss them as “just babies” either.

One more note: Farnished from gate 17 and In Bocca Al Lupe from 16 have made life hard for themselves. Over 1094m you can win wide, but you need to be good and you need the race to break your way. I’d rather be holding something with a map.

Staking: Win bet Funky Cold Medina. Small saver quinella with Kobi Express if you want a bit of cover.

Race 2: Clocktower Hotel Inglis Bonus Super Showcase Mdn Plate — 13:04, 1859m

Here’s the question that matters: do you want to take on the class of the Waterhouse and Bott runner, or are you happy to accept it and move on? I’m happy to accept it. Audaciously Frank gets the inside gate and comes off a 6-2 form start to his career. In a maiden over 1859m at Grafton, that’s often enough, because so many of these are still learning to stay, still learning to relax, and still learning to run through the line.

What I like is how clean the setup looks. Barrier 1 lets L P Beuzelin decide whether it’s a sit and sprint or a steady build. Either way, you’re not asking the horse to do anything clever. Compare that to a few of his rivals who look like they’ll need a race to go perfectly to win it.

The main threat for mine is Indigo Star. He keeps finding the line without sealing the deal, and the Rawiller booking feels like a “get it done” move. Rawiller hasn’t won in four rides at Grafton, but he has placed in all four, so he’s seeing the track well. If they crawl and turn it into a 600m dash, he’s the rider I want on the danger.

Among the locals, Divil A Bit has been hovering around the mark (6-3-2 then 7-2) and he maps to get every chance again from gate 2, so he’s the trifecta anchor if you’re playing wider.

Staking: Win bet Audaciously Frank. Keep it simple. If the market gets too skinny, play him as a multi leg rather than forcing a straight bet.

Race 3: Barastoc Wards Mistake Rural Showcase Plate (C6) — 13:39, 2406m

The market will probably want you to chase the last-start winner, but I’m siding with the horse who’s been living in the finish and looks perfectly placed to strike. Rock The Machine has the right mix of current form and proven comfort at Grafton. His recent form reads 1-5-6-2-3-1, and the key piece for me is the course record: three runs here for a win and two other placings. That’s an emerging pattern at this circuit, and it matters even more over 2406m where rhythm, balance, and cornering can decide the final 100m.

He’s also not asked to give away a big weight edge. He carries 126.7 and draws 7, which should let Kyle Wilson-Taylor roll into a stalking spot without overworking early. If the leaders go steady, he can sit close. If they make it a staying test, he’s shown he can keep finding.

Brilliant Knight is the danger and the obvious one. He comes in with 1-1-8-3-3 on the page and gets B Looker, who rides Grafton as well as anyone in volume terms. The slight niggle is he’s drawn 12, and over this trip you don’t want to be covering extra ground just to find a position. He’ll need a calm ride early and a bit of luck not to be posted.

If you’re chasing something at a price, Firm Agreement is interesting. That form line (70-091) screams inconsistency, but it also screams “when he’s right, he’s right.” If he can land midfield from gate 4 and get into clear air before the bend, he’s the type who can run past tired horses late.

Staking: This is the best betting race on the card for me. Win bet Rock The Machine. Save on Brilliant Knight if your book offers a fair price. I’d keep exotics small and disciplined.

Race 4: Fidelity Capital Showcase Hcp (C2) — 14:14, 1203m

This race is a contrast in profiles: you’ve got Dunn’s quality three-year-olds who can win on talent, and you’ve got the hardened sprint handicappers who just keep showing up and running well. The one I want to be with is Immortal Storm. The form is sharp: 22-171. He’s a last-start winner, he’s still on the up, and he gets Bullock, who has made a habit of doing the right thing at this track when he shows up. Gate 12 isn’t perfect, but over 1203m it’s workable if you can slide in behind the right line and not get caught three deep forever.

The Dunn trio complicates the map. Alleze has won on his only run at Grafton, and that matters as a confidence tick, not a trend. He’s drawn 10 and gets Adkins, and if he lands in the first half without spending, he’s the one who can make my pick work. Storm Merchant is the other Dunn runner with a podium finish here and Rawiller rides, which is rarely an accident. If Rawiller can find cover from gate 5 and peel at the right moment, he can absolutely out-ride a field like this.

The local I don’t want to leave out is Kid Billy. He’s been winning races (8-2-1-1-5-3) and gets Stephen Cummins, who hasn’t had a lot of joy winning at Grafton but can put one in the race. Kid Billy draws 6 and looks the most likely of the “tough” brigade to get the right run without drama.

Staking: Win bet Immortal Storm. If you’re building multis, consider Immortal Storm one out, but keep a small savers-only play on Alleze if the market lets you.

The plays

I’m not trying to be cute with Grafton best bets today. The card has a clear anchor stable and a clear anchor race, so I’m building around that rather than spraying. NAP: Rock The Machine in Race 3 (13:39). He’s already shown he handles this circuit, and in a 2406m race I’ll take the horse who stays, travels, and keeps finishing over the flashy one who needs everything to fall his way.

Value: Immortal Storm in Race 4 (14:14). He’s trending the right way (22-171) and Bullock’s small-sample record here is punchy. If the market overreacts to the wide draw and gives you a backable price, take it.

Banker for multis: Audaciously Frank in Race 2 (13:04). Inside gate, big stable, and a profile that screams “maiden about to be put away.”

Each-way look: Kobi Express in Race 1 (12:29). The draw gives her a chance to be in the first few and make her own luck in a race full of unknowns.

Course angle to carry forward: keep respecting the Dunn team whenever they send multiple runners to Grafton. Fifty-one runners is enough evidence to treat it as a repeatable pattern, not a coincidence.

Next time Rawiller turns up here with a stable that normally dominates locally, watch the market early, because the “four rides, four placings” story tends to shorten quickly once people notice.
