BEST BET: GIDDY UP WARRIOR

Race 6

GIDDY UP WARRIOR recorded his first success on the track when he scored at Sandown over 1500m just a couple of weeks ago. He produced an impressive turn of foot to get to the front just in time in that maiden contest.

With that victory now behind him, Ben, Will and JD Hayes’ gelding can build on his success, especially over this new distance of 1800m, which looks perfect for him. He is bred to appreciate this extra trip.

The son of Saxon Warrior has less weight on his back this time and he has a good draw in barrier three. Jockey Mark Zahra will be able to take the inside route at Flemington. He looks the one to beat in the Penfolds Victoria Derby Preview.

SECOND BEST BET: HURRY CURRY

Race 5

One of the most unexposed runners in the Crown Oaks Preview is Hurry Curry. The filly has had just two starts so far in her career. She prevailed at Bairnsdale earlier this month in a contest over 1600m.

Under the hands of jockey Jye McNeil, she took a while to get going in her last run, but once she settled down, she finished her race powerfully. The extra 200m in this race is likely to help the daughter of Ocean Park.

This is clearly a tougher challenge for the Bairnsdale winner, but she should take another step forward here on just her third outing. She could be a big VRC Oaks contender later this year.

Best Value: Intrepid Eagle

Race 8

Intrepid Eagle has had to settle for second place in each of his last three races. He has been consistently knocking on the door, but he keeps finding just one rival better than him on the day.

The five-year-old can be rewarded for his consistently with the top prize this time. He has had a decent break over the last few months, so he will be fresh for this assignment, as he bids for a fourth career success.

Connections have opted for a shorter distance in this race and that may be a smart move. He has some decent form at this course, and he looks to have been underestimated in the odds.
