Gatton Racing Tips 16 Oct 2026: Can Bruce Strike Again?

Overview

Jack Bruce has saddled six winners from eleven Gatton runners, and Tara’s Reward brings two straight wins and a win on her only start at this track into the Benchmark 58 sprint on Friday.

That is the stable to respect on a Lockyer Valley card that runs eight races on a Good turf surface, starting with a maiden over 1400m at 12:33PM and closing with the 1400m Handicap at 4:55PM. Bruce also sends out Overoptomystic in the opener and Larusso in the staying race, so his name will come up more than once.

Four of the eight races are maidens, which means plenty of guesswork in the first half of the day. The back half is where the betting lives. Rocky Blonde, Quality Miss and Vizstar all arrive in form with something already banked at this track or against today’s rivals. These Gatton racing tips work through all eight races, flag which course stats carry weight and which are one-run noise, and finish with five plays you can actually use. Scratchings have bitten hard, too, with five horses out of the last race alone, so check the final fields before you bet.

Gatton, the setup

The track is rated Good, and the card sits in two blocks: three maidens and a 860m Benchmark race early, then four races from 1100m out to 2000m once the better-exposed horses take over. Course form is thin across the maidens, but a handful of the handicappers have been here often enough to count.

Horse Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Peach Galantes 7 1 4 14.3 57.1
Headline Legend 4 0 1 0.0 25.0
Quality Miss 3 1 2 33.3 66.7
Qickwit 3 1 2 33.3 66.7

Only Peach Galantes has a true body of work here, and one win from seven tells you she runs well at Gatton without often finishing the job. She stays in Race 6 after her scratching from the last.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
MS K Lenton 9 2 6 22.2 66.7
Tahlia Fenlon 10 3 6 30.0 60.0
Jess Emmerson 17 2 9 11.8 52.9
Colleen Krahnen 12 2 6 16.7 50.0
B Lerena 21 4 10 19.1 47.6
William Galloway 7 2 3 28.6 42.9
Bailie Baker 19 2 8 10.5 42.1
Tiffani Brooker 22 4 9 18.2 40.9
Trainer Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Pat W Webster 9 3 8 33.3 88.9
P & W Hulbert 5 1 4 20.0 80.0
P J Minter 5 1 3 20.0 60.0
R G Lipp 14 5 8 35.7 57.1
Jack Bruce 11 6 6 54.5 54.5
K R Kemp 21 5 8 23.8 38.1
Corey & Kylie Geran 31 1 5 3.2 16.1

Read the Bruce line carefully: every one of his placings at Gatton has been a win. When his horses fire here, they finish it off. The Geran stable sits at the other end, with one winner from 31 runners, so treat Il Cubo with caution in the last.

Gatton racing tips, race by race

Race 1: Barrier Reef Pools Mdn Plate, 12:33PM, 1400m

Eleven maidens after the scratchings, most of them exposed as moderate, and one lightly raced type who might be better than all of them. Kick On Charlie ran third on debut, his only start in the past 90 days, and now steps out second up. D Peisley takes the ride, with two wins from ten Gatton rides.

Overoptomystic is the danger because of who trains him. Jack Bruce owns this track, and Overoptomystic jumps from barrier 1 after running second at his first start. There has been no run since mid-July, though, and the last outing was a ninth. Moonlight Odyssey keeps running into the placings without winning, and Kayla Barker has not ridden a winner from 14 Gatton rides.

Small win bet on Kick On Charlie, with Overoptomystic as the saver. This is not a race to bet big on.

Race 2: Mcneil Farms Mdn Plate, 1:08PM, 1400m

Does anyone in this field actually want to win? With Filthy scratched, the only horse with a progressive profile is gone, and the exposed maidens left behind have little recent form to recommend them. That opens the door for Trusty Felina, an unraced runner from the William Kropp stable with B Lerena aboard. Kropp has two winners and six placings from 13 Gatton runners, and Lerena does not get many idle rides from that yard. Barrier 9 is workable over 1400m.

Ellofaby is the danger. The form line reads 4-6-8-4-6-2, so the latest run was a second, but there is just one placing from four recent runs and nothing from two visits here. Stolen Stock brings the P J Minter stable, which has placed with three of five Gatton runners, but it has not raced in the last three months.

Small win bet on Trusty Felina, with Ellofaby as the saver. Watch the debutant in the parade first.

Race 3: Harman Concreting Mdn Plate, 1:43PM, 860m

Ready As Bam has done everything except win. His form line reads 4-3-4-2-2, he has placed in three of four runs in the past 90 days, and he has averaged a second-place finish over that stretch. At 860m, the shortest trip on the card, a horse with that much race experience holds a big edge over a field packed with first starters.

Barrier 10 is the snag, because a 860m sprint gives no time to recover from a slow beginning. Glenn Richardson has one winner from three Gatton runners, and Hannah Richardson keeps the ride.

The unknown to fear is Pinot Pirate. Tahlia Fenlon has won three of her ten rides here and placed in six, the best strike rate of any jockey with real volume on the card, and the Munce stable has two winners from nine Gatton runners. Debutants from that combination deserve respect. Ready As Bam each-way, Pinot Pirate in the exacta.

Race 4: Goodyear Auto Care Gatton (Bm58), 2:18PM, 860m

Jack Bruce does not send many horses to Gatton, but when he does they tend to win: six from eleven, and no placings without a win. Tara’s Reward is the best of his three runners on Friday. She won her only previous start at this track and has won her last two, which makes two wins from four runs since mid-July. Her form has gone 8-0-5-4-1-1, so she is a horse building through her preparation.

The weight is the question. She carries top weight, the price of winning twice in a row, and 860m gives the lighter sprinters a chance to fly the gates. Barrier 4 helps; William Galloway can let her roll and hold a spot in the first three. Galloway has two wins from seven Gatton rides, and this is a fresh pairing: the jockey and Bruce have no previous rides together on record, so the booking looks deliberate.

Levar is the main danger. He also has two wins from five runs over the last three months, though the latest of those was a sixth, and he has not placed in two Gatton starts. Igotmymindonyou has the inside gate and MS K Lenton, who has placed in six of her nine Gatton rides. Ladies Ocean Run comes from Pat W Webster, who has placed with eight of nine runners here. Back Tara’s Reward to win and box Igotmymindonyou in the quinella.

Race 5: Royal George Hotel Rosewood Mdn Plate, 2:55PM, 1100m

Love And Pain and Whiskey And Wine have both been close in recent maidens. The question is which one finally gets there. Love And Pain has placed in all four starts in the past 90 days (2-2-3-3), without a win but also without a poor run, and B Lerena takes the ride. Lerena has the volume to back him up at this track: 21 rides, four wins, and a placing almost every second time out.

Whiskey And Wine placed in both of his recent runs and has a 3-4-2-2-3 career line, but he jumps from barrier 12 and carries more weight. MS S Croxford has yet to train a Gatton winner from eight runners, which tempers enthusiasm a little.

Anderlay is scratched, which leaves Fiona Sandkuhl free for the other Matthew Hoysted runner, Head Of The River, a three-time runner-up on a 2-4-4-9-2-2 form line. Mishani Vision has placed in three straight starts but J L Taylor has one placing from 18 Gatton rides. Love And Pain to win, and lean on him in multis.

Race 6: Get Your Calcutta Tickets – See WWW.LOCKYERVALLEYTURFCLUB.COM.AU For Details Hcp (55), 3:35PM, 1100m

Rocky Blonde won last start, and his recent profile is as consistent as anything on this card: four placings from five runs since mid-July, with an average finish just outside second. He also won one of his two starts at Gatton, so the track holds no fears. MS S Tierney rides from barrier 5.

Oh Pretty Emma is the one who could spoil it. She has also won at Gatton (once from two starts) and has Lerena and Kropp behind her again, but she has had no run over the last three months and comes in fresh. The pair have not met before, so this is a straight test of fitness against freshness. Encrypted Feeling is in a similar spot: a Gatton winner with no recent run, and top weight on top of that.

Qickwit has two placings from three starts here but just one placing from four recent runs. Win bet on Rocky Blonde, with Oh Pretty Emma as the exacta partner.

Race 7: Save The Date Sunday 1st November – Melbourne Cup Calcutta Draw Falvey’s Hotel Gatton (Bm58), 4:15PM, 2000m

The longest race of the day sets up as a test of stamina rather than speed, and at 2000m on a Good track the horses that can hold a position without being asked for a long run have the advantage. That points straight to Quality Miss.

She comes off a win, her form line closing 9-2-8-1. She has also been at her best around here, with a win and another placing from three Gatton starts, and gets in with one of the lighter weights from barrier 2, and M Hellyer, the most active rider at this track, can tuck her away behind the leaders and save something for the turn. Over the past 90 days she has one win from five runs, which is not a flawless record, but the recent win lines up with this target.

Headline Legend is the obvious threat on form. He has won his last two and has two wins from five runs since mid-July. He has also been to Gatton four times without a win and picked up just one placing. He has been scratched from Race 8, so this is his target, and that makes him the danger.

Victory Command carries top weight, and Jesse Townsend has placed with two of three Gatton runners. Larusso brings the Bruce stable into the race and has two placings from four recent runs, but there is no win among the six starts on his form line. At the bottom of the weights, Papal Miss gets the rail and one of the lightest weights, which could matter late in a race this long.

The race shape suits a horse that sits closer to the lead, and Quality Miss‘s barrier and weight let her do exactly that. Back her to win, with a smaller each-way bet on Larusso to cover the Bruce angle.

Race 8: Book In Your Work Xmas Party – Friday 4th Dec Race Day Hcp (55), 4:55PM, 1400m

Vizstar and Holler Dash met over this exact distance at Tara on 3 October, and Vizstar won with Holler Dash right behind him in second. They meet again at the same trip, and I see no reason for the order to flip. Vizstar has won two of his seven runs over the last three months, has placed in both of his Gatton starts, and draws barrier 7. Jayden Sims has placed with both of his runners here.

Scratchings have thinned this race: Calvary, Peach Galantes, Headline Legend, All Too Rosey and Nitrogen are all out. The horse who gains most is Hawaiian Bloom. Three placings, one of them a win, from four runs since mid-July, a form line of 0-3-1-8-3, barrier 3 and one of the lighter weights add up to a runner who should get the run of the race. William Galloway rides, and the jockey has won two of seven rides at Gatton. Hawaiian Bloom has not met Vizstar or Holler Dash before, so this is a fresh line of form.

Kharif has one win and two placings from five recent runs for Frederick Larson, who has ridden three Gatton winners from 29 rides. Vizstar is the win bet; Hawaiian Bloom goes each-way.

Where the money goes

NAP: Tara’s Reward (Race 4, 2:18PM). She is unbeaten at Gatton from one start, has won her last two, and runs for the trainer who has won with six of his eleven runners at this track. Top weight is the only obstacle.

Value: Hawaiian Bloom (Race 8, 4:55PM). The scratchings took out five runners and softened the race. A win among three placings from four recent runs, a low draw and a light weight make Hawaiian Bloom the overlooked one behind Vizstar.

Banker: Love And Pain (Race 5, 2:55PM). He has finished second or third at each of his last four starts, and Lerena gives him the strongest jockey booking in the race. He is the safest leg for a quaddie.

Each-way: Ready As Bam (Race 3, 1:43PM). Three placings from four recent runs and an average finish of second make him the safest place bet on the card.

Course angle: Jack Bruce at Gatton. Six winners from eleven runners, and each of those placings was a win. Overoptomystic, Tara’s Reward and Larusso all carry that record into Friday.

Lerena has four rides on the card, and if Love And Pain and Oh Pretty Emma run to their profiles, expect Lerena’s book at the November Gatton meetings to get a lot stronger.
