Gaelic Kiwi looks the right starting point because he’s been living in this grade without falling away. That form string of 4-7-2-4-2-4 says he turns up and gives you a sight, and the stable has called in Damian Lane, which usually means they’re ready to stop playing bridesmaid. He also placed on his only start at Geelong, so the track clearly doesn’t bother him.
The map helps too. From gate 5 in a staying maiden, Lane should be able to find a rhythm without doing anything silly early. Over 2663m, I’d much rather be on the horse that keeps presenting than the one with a flashy 600m split in a 1600m race.
The danger is Knights Emperor for Waterhouse and Bott. He’s 8 then 5-2-2, so he’s improved sharply since the stable found the right gear, and he draws to be prominent (gate 6) without being forced to burn across. If he controls it, you’ll need Gaelic Kiwi to genuinely stay.

Here’s the question race: how long does a horse have to keep knocking before you just back it? Just Like Jagger has gone 2-2 from two starts. That’s a tiny sample, but it’s the right sort of sample: the horse has turned up twice and been right there both times. From the wide draw (9), the ride is the key. If S Vella can slide in with cover rather than being posted, I think he’s the one with the most reliable “turn of foot meets effort” profile.
There’s a genuine threat from the inside: Diamond Eye brings the best recent pattern in the race (7-3-4-2-1) and draws gate 1, which is the dream for a horse that can hold a spot and sprint. The knock is the jockey listing is blank in the data, so you’re trusting the horse more than the combo, but barrier one over 1558m at Geelong is still a weapon.
Lane also sticks his hand up with Diesel Desmond (gate 7) but with only two runs shown (6-5) it reads more like a horse still learning, not one ready to win a maiden today.
Play: Just Like Jagger each-way if the price is fair given the draw, otherwise a straight win bet and keep it simple. Exacta saver Diamond Eye over the top.
Race 3: Oasis Turf Mdn Plate — 14:00, 1340m
The stable move jumps off the page: A and S Freedman saddle two, and Damian Lane chooses Morocco. That’s enough for me in a 3yo maiden where most of them are either first starters or lightly exposed. Gate 3 is perfect over 1340m, and Lane’s the kind of rider who turns “nice trial horse” into “wins first crack” by simply not giving away lengths at the wrong time.
The main danger is Keen Observer with Blake Shinn. He’s already run second, and that’s meaningful because it proves he handles raceday pressure. The draw (12) makes it trickier, but if they roll forward and Shinn can find a lane without being trapped deep, he’s the obvious “hardest to beat” type.
I also want to mention Zoucity for Waller and McNeil from gate 5. Waller’s had eight runners at Geelong for three wins, which is strong placement, and McNeil rides the track well with 23 local rides. The issue is we don’t have exposed form, so you’re betting on camp confidence.

Race 4: Roderick Insurance Brokers Mdn Plate — 14:30, 1340m
This one looks like a speed and position race, not a “best horse wins by panels” race. Henry Dwyer’s horses are usually fit enough to take a position, and Michael Dee is a rider you can trust to make the inside work even if the race turns messy.
But my top pick is the lightly exposed Terrestrial Light. He’s only had one start and ran second, which is the profile I want in a maiden with a lot of unknowns. Gate 3 means Jack Hill can be positive without being reckless. If he takes a step forward off that debut, he wins a race like this more often than he loses it.
The danger is Brightly Dance, who keeps finding the line (8-2-3 shown) and has also placed on her only Geelong run. The problem is the draw (15). If she’s posted three wide with no cover, she might be the best horse and still get beat.

Race 5: Mcgrath Real Estate Hcp (C1) — 15:00, 1449m
The market problem is usually that punters underrate consistency when wins are scarce. Lofty Thoughts hasn’t won this prep, but look at the shape: 2-9 then 3-3-3-2. That’s a horse who keeps putting himself in the race. He draws gate 3, gets Lachlan Neindorf (who wins a solid chunk of his Geelong rides across 22 mounts), and he’s in a C1 where a lot of them still have a “find a way to lose” habit.
The other appeal is that this is the most bettable race on the card because we’ve got exposed runners with repeat patterns, not guesswork. If Neindorf can land Lofty Thoughts one off the fence and present at the right time, the horse should get his chance.
The danger is Prevention. He’s already placed on his only start at Geelong, and he comes in with a last-start second (1-5-0-5-2).
