Day 4: Friday 14th March – Cheltenham Gold Cup Day

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the ultimate prize in jumps racing across Britain and Ireland, standing as the marquee event of the Festival.

Reigning champion Galopin Des Champs has been in scintillating form as he aims for a historic third consecutive victory, a feat last achieved by Best Mate in 2004. All eyes will be on him as he bids to cement his place among the greats.

History of the Cheltenham Festival

Horse racing has been a part of Cheltenham’s heritage for over 200 years, with the Festival itself dating back to 1860, when the National Hunt Chase was first run at Market Harborough. Since then, it has grown into one of the most prestigious events in global racing.

Originally a two-day meeting, the Festival expanded to three days in 1923 before evolving into the four-day spectacle we know today in 2005. At the time, racecards featured six events per day, later increasing to the seven-race format that is now standard.

The Festival has only been cancelled once, in 1916, due to World War I. A defining moment in its history came in 1924, when the Cheltenham Gold Cup was first run, with Red Splash claiming victory for trainer Fred Withington and jockey Dick Rees. The race’s most dominant horse remains Golden Miller, who secured an incredible five consecutive Gold Cup wins from 1932 to 1936.

The Festival continued to grow, with the first Champion Hurdle staged in 1927, won by Blaris for trainer Bill Payne. Over three decades later, in 1959, the Champion Chase was introduced and later renamed in honour of the Queen Mother—remaining the premier two-mile chase to this day.
