The Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival begins this weekend at Rosehill Gardens where it is Ladies Day. The Group One Coolmore Classic is the feature race on the card, and it is set to be a strong renewal, with some of the leading fillies and mares in Australia involved.
Here is a preview of the card from Rosehill, which also includes the Maurice McCarten Stakes and Ajax Stakes. We have also put up the best bet for the Coolmore Classic.
BEST BET: LADY SHENANDOAH
Race 8 – Coolmore Classic
With wins coming over distances between 1200m and 1600m, Lady Shenandoah has shown she is not just one of the best fillies in Australia, she is also versatile. She has speed, stamina, and a quality all great horses seem to have — she battles to the finish line.
Since turning three years old, Lady Shenandoah is unbeaten in four starts. Earlier in the season, she recorded victories in the Group Three Precise Air Ming Dynasty Quality at Rosehill and then the Group One Flight Stakes at Randwick. After a well-deserved break, Chris Waller’s filly has looked even stronger over the last couple of months, landing the Light Finger Stakes and The Chase Surround Stakes.
Waller has opted to skip the Phar Lap Stakes in favour of the Coolmore Classic, and he can be rewarded for that optimism. She has been handed barrier 13 and a weight allocation of 54.5kg, but neither of those are likely to be enough to stop her from prevailing on what is set to be her last run of the autumn.
SECOND BEST BET: PISANELLO
Race 7 – Maurice McCarten Stakes
Pisanello has been in excellent form in the sprint division this season. He completed a hat-track of wins when he won the Traffic Logistics Benchmark 78 Handicap (100m) at Kembla Grange on his latest appearance.
James Cummings’ runner didn’t come out of the stalls well at Kembla Grange, but Adam Hyeronimus did a great job of settling him towards the rear of the field. He was asked to quicken with 400m to go, and despite having a good few lengths to make up, he comfortably scored in the end.
Cummings is expecting Pisanello to have a big autumn campaign. His sprinter remains open to improvement, and he could be set to reach the top grade. Zac Lloyd is on board this time, but he knows the horse well, having ridden him last season at Rosehill.
Pisanello has some work to do on ratings with Coal Crusher and Insurrection, but he will be getting bags of weight from those two horses. This looks like a great opportunity for him to shine at this level.

Race 9 – Ajax Stakes
West Of Africa showed what he is capable of when he got his nose in front at Gold Coast in a Listed race over 1400m back in January. The five-year-old beat 17 other rivals in that race, coming home the strongest to land the valuable prize.
Since that victory, West Of Africa has run below par in two starts. He didn’t look as sharp on Hobartville Stakes Day at Rosehill where he finished 6th of nine runners in the Benchmark 100 Handicap (1400m).
With Ducasse, Pericles and Iowna Merc dominating the top positions in the betting for this race, West Of Africa has been underestimated by the bookmakers. This large field will suit him, and with bottom weight of just 53kg, it would be no surprise to see him scoop first place.
