Overview
Jade Trees has won three of its last five starts and arrives at the Akubra Kempsey Cup with the lightest weight of the realistic chances. That is the story of the day at Kempsey, and it is why the Cup at 4:55PM is where the bigger bet goes.
The rest of the card is a typical Friday country meeting: eight races, three of them maidens, a run of BM58 to BM74 handicaps, and a feed that rates the track heavy at the time of writing. Heavy ground changes the shape of the 1586m races, and it makes recent form on rain-affected tracks worth more than raw ratings.
These Kempsey racing tips run race by race from 1:15PM to 5:35PM. You will get a clear pick in every race, the jockeys and stables with real numbers at this track, an honest read on the weak maidens, and a short list of where the money actually goes at the end. B Looker, who has ridden three winners from nine rides here, is on six runners and is worth tracking all afternoon.
Kempsey racing tips: reading the card
Limited course form across today’s fields. Nobody on the card has more than two starts at Kempsey, so the horse side of the stats is a handful of single data points: La Bella Rosa, Jeunetos and Just One Look all won on their only visit, while Billybago, Taverna and Cool Az Aletta placed on theirs.
The riders and stables give us more to work with. Six jockeys have five or more rides at the track.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| P Graham | 8 | 2 | 5 | 25.0 | 62.5 |
| Jenny Duggan | 9 | 2 | 5 | 22.2 | 55.6 |
| B Looker | 9 | 3 | 4 | 33.3 | 44.4 |
| L P Rolls | 5 | 1 | 2 | 20.0 | 40.0 |
| Teighan Worsnop | 7 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 14.3 |
| Daniel Smith | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
On the training side, G Prosser stands out. Four of the six Kempsey runners from that stable have placed and two have won, and its only runner today is Jeunetos in Race 5.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jason Reilly | 3 | 1 | 3 | 33.3 | 100.0 |
| G Prosser | 6 | 2 | 4 | 33.3 | 66.7 |
| A P Ball | 3 | 1 | 2 | 33.3 | 66.7 |
| Colt Prosser | 8 | 1 | 3 | 12.5 | 37.5 |
| Cassandra Schmidt | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 33.3 |
| Sally Taylor | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 33.3 |
| K A Lees | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 25.0 |
| H R Dew | 5 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 20.0 |
A P Ball has the biggest team on the card, with runners in five of the eight races, so expect the stable to come up more than once below.

Kempsey race by race
Race 1: Kempsey Macleay RSL Club Country Boosted Mdn Plate, 1:15PM, 1094m
The market has Justice And Grace at $1.85 with Bet Right, and that price is built entirely on a stable and a rider. The Paul Snowden two-year-old has never raced, draws barrier 1 and gets B Looker, who has the best strike rate of the regular Kempsey riders on the card. That is a real case, but it is still a first-starter going into a heavy-track sprint against older maidens.
Sweet Marlene is the one with a reason in the form. The seven-year-old ran second last start, its only run in the past three months and its best effort in six starts. L P Rolls rides from barrier 5. At $3.50 with Bet Right, nearly double the favourite’s price, that recent second is being undervalued.
Truly Graphic ran third last start for A P Ball and is the danger if the debutant is not ready. Win bet on Sweet Marlene.
Race 2: Pynx Cranes Showcase (Bm74), 1:50PM, 2078m
Prince Is Game has won the last two. Four runs in the past three months have produced two wins, and B Looker rides again. Over 2078m on a heavy track, a horse in the winning habit carrying 121.2kg is a better proposition than one that has not won in its last six starts.
That describes Brilliant Knight, the slight favourite at $2.80 with Unibet. Third in four of the last five starts is consistent, but it keeps finding one or two better. L P Rolls rides from barrier 4, and this is the clear danger.
Zou Big Boy won three runs back for MS L Selby and has the class to run on if the leaders come back. Back Prince Is Game to win at $3.00 with Neds.
Race 3: Seabreeze Hotel South West Rocks Showcase Mdn Hcp, 2:25PM, 1367m
Is anyone in this maiden actually going forward? Torpedo Tube is the closest thing to it. The three-year-old ran second two starts back before a seventh last time, and the market has it at $2.90 with Bet Right. He is one of the few in the field with a placing in recent weeks.
Prestige Fantastic is second favourite at $3.80 for A P Ball, but four runs in the past three months have produced no placings. Sunny Quarters, trained by M J Robinson, ran third two starts back and is the danger at $7.00 from the wide gate. Taverna placed on its only Kempsey visit and is a long shot at $41.00.
Hard to have a confident view. Small win on Torpedo Tube, and this is a race to keep the stakes down.
Race 4: Crystalite Linemarking Showcase Super Mdn Hcp, 3:05PM, 1586m
Insain Chaos has run second twice in the last four starts, including a fourth last time, and gets barrier 1 in a field that will be spread across the track. Kyle Wilson-Taylor rides for B J Dodson, and on a heavy track the inside draw should save ground for the full 1586m. It is $1.90 with Unibet, which is short for a maiden, but nothing else in the race has those recent placings.
Sleuth is the danger. It ran third last start, drops to 116.8kg and has Paige Fergusson-Smith riding for P Cheers, though barrier 15 means a long way to cover. Trackhawk is the intriguing one. It has never raced, but Jason Reilly has placed with all three runners brought to Kempsey, and Zac Wadick rides at $12.00.
Win bet on Insain Chaos, and a small saver on Trackhawk at the price.
Race 5: O’Donnell And Hanlon Showcase (Bm58), 3:40PM, 1367m
Two course winners and a top weight in form. Just One Look won on its only Kempsey start and won again last start, and P Graham rides. P Graham has placed on five of eight rides here, which is the best record of any jockey on the card. J D Cooper has had one runner at Kempsey, and it won.
Jeunetos also won on its only start here and has two wins from four runs in the past three months, but finished seventh last start. G Prosser‘s record at the track makes it impossible to dismiss, and B Looker picks up the ride. Under Twenty Two has finished first, third and second in the last three starts, but carries 134.4kg, the most in the race.
Just One Look is the pick, with Jeunetos the danger. Win bet, and no bookmaker had a market up when this was written.
Race 6: Steve Keir Memorial Showcase (Bm66), 4:20PM, 1094m
The progressive three-year-old against the exposed older sprinters. Home Siren has won two of the three starts on its form line, including the last one. That win was worth $15,000, which is real money for a horse at this level. L P Rolls rides at 124.5kg for Cassandra Schmidt.
Most of the field is the opposite profile. Damas carries 138.8kg and finished seventh last start, and Telegraph was sixth last start under 134.4kg. A Touch From Fayt is the one to fear. It ran second last start and was fourth three times before that, so it keeps turning up, and Courtney Bellamy rides at 122.3kg.
Win bet on Home Siren.
Race 7: Akubra Kempsey Cup, 4:55PM, 1586m
Jade Trees is the best horse in the Cup on recent form and gets the most help from the handicapper. Three wins from five runs in the past three months, and the one time it missed the first three in that stretch it was sixth. The last start was a third, not a win, and that may keep the price up.
The weight matters more than usual on heavy ground. At 117.9kg it carries more than 14kg less than top weight Zaru and more than 5kg less than the main rival, Creative Righteous. G Spokes rides for B J Dodson from barrier 4, which should put it in the first half of the field without having to use her early.
Creative Righteous is the danger. Two wins from eight runs in the past three months and a third last start make it the most reliable of the others, and G Buckley rides for P Cheers. It has the class to finish over the top if the pace is strong. Zaru ran second last start and has two placings from three recent runs, but 132.2kg on this ground is a lot. Golden Honour, second last start, is the roughie from barrier 12.
Kid Billy, Bold Hoi Ho and Navy Buoy all come in off below-par runs. This looks like a three-horse race, and the lightweight is the one with the best recent form.
Win bet on Jade Trees, with a saver exacta with Creative Righteous.
Race 8: Team Edwards At Harcourts Country Boosted (Bm58), 5:35PM, 1586m
Nugget Smart won two starts back and ran second twice before that, and last start’s sixth is the only blot on recent form. A Bullock rides for Ben Blay from barrier 5, and at 131.1kg it is near the top of the weights in a race where the field is evenly matched.
La Bella Rosa won on its only Kempsey visit and R Simonetta has won with one of two runners here, but it was fifth last start and draws barrier 14. Aye Aye Skipper is the place play. It ran third last start, third two starts before that, and has Liam Riordan riding from barrier 3.
Purple Kitty and Outoftheoffice both need to bounce back from poor runs. Win bet on Nugget Smart, and Aye Aye Skipper each-way.

Where the money goes
NAP: Jade Trees (Race 7, 4:55PM). Three wins from five recent runs and 14kg less than top weight. On heavy ground over 1586m, the weight is the edge.
Value: Sweet Marlene (Race 1, 1:15PM). $3.50 with Bet Right against an unraced favourite at $1.85. Second last start, and the only one in the race with a recent placing that good.
Banker: Prince Is Game (Race 2, 1:50PM). Won the last two and keeps B Looker. $3.00 with Neds.
Each-way: Aye Aye Skipper (Race 8, 5:35PM). Third in two of the last three starts, and barrier 3 gives every chance to hold a spot.
Course angle: B Looker. Three winners from nine Kempsey rides, and six rides today, including Prince Is Game, Justice And Grace and Jeunetos.
If G Prosser keeps placing two in every three runners sent here, Jeunetos will not be the last of the stable worth a look at Kempsey.
