Overview
Beneficiary has been placed in all five of its starts at Launceston and won three of them, and Barry Campbell brings it back on Friday night as one of four stable runners in the Ken Hallet (Bm76). That is the best piece of course form on a ten-race card, and it sits in a race where the trainer has effectively built a quaddie leg of its own.
It is far from the only angle. Fighting For Gold is two from two on this track, Geegees Downpour has hit the frame in five of six visits, and E Byrne Burke arrives with 35 wins from 124 Launceston rides. The track is rated Good to Soft and the card runs from 5:25PM to 10:00PM, a long night that opens with three maidens before the handicaps start to bite. These Launceston racing tips go race by race, with a firm view where the form supports one and an honest pass where it doesn’t. No bookmaker had a market up when this was written, so prices are left out rather than guessed.
Reading the Launceston card
There is real course form on this card, which is not always the case at a Tasmanian night meeting. Thirty-five runners have three or more starts here, and a handful of them are the reason to bet.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beneficiary | 5 | 3 | 5 | 60.0 | 100.0 |
| Geegees Downpour | 6 | 2 | 5 | 33.3 | 83.3 |
| Vortistar | 6 | 2 | 4 | 33.3 | 66.7 |
| Go Jeanie | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.7 | 66.7 |
| Novalargo | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.7 | 66.7 |
| Genuine Lady | 6 | 2 | 3 | 33.3 | 50.0 |
The riding ranks are led by one name. E Byrne Burke wins more than a quarter of all rides here and places in half of them, and nobody else on the card comes close on strike rate.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E Byrne Burke | 124 | 35 | 63 | 28.2 | 50.8 |
| K Sanderson | 56 | 8 | 28 | 14.3 | 50.0 |
| D M Ganderton | 19 | 4 | 9 | 21.1 | 47.4 |
| Sam Kennedy | 20 | 4 | 8 | 20.0 | 40.0 |
| Codi Jordan | 84 | 11 | 32 | 13.1 | 38.1 |
| A Darmanin | 45 | 7 | 17 | 15.6 | 37.8 |
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew Brown | 14 | 4 | 10 | 28.6 | 71.4 |
| G J Stevenson | 95 | 21 | 51 | 22.1 | 53.7 |
| S Gandy | 102 | 12 | 50 | 11.8 | 49.0 |
| J L Keys | 58 | 9 | 28 | 15.5 | 48.3 |
| Adam Trinder | 87 | 21 | 39 | 24.1 | 44.8 |
| Barry Campbell | 63 | 10 | 27 | 15.9 | 42.9 |
Two stables shape the night. G J Stevenson has eight runners and hits the frame with more than half of the stable’s Launceston starters. S Gandy has nine and places at a similar rate, but converts far fewer of those placings into wins, which matters when you are deciding between a win bet and a place bet.

Launceston predictions, race by race
Race 1: Trent Wells Mdn Plate, 5:25PM, 1531m
Sounds Of Peace has had two starts, both here, and run second both times. That is the most reliable form in a maiden full of question marks, and G J Stevenson keeps D M Ganderton aboard from barrier three. The horse has shown it handles the track and the trip suits a type that has been knocking on the door.
Nine Choirs is the danger. It has had two starts for S Gandy, placing once, and jumps from the inside gate with Chloe Wells. If it finds the rail and the leaders come back, it can turn the tables. Win bet on Sounds Of Peace.
Race 2: Ladbrokes Tote Win +10% In October (Bm60), 6:00PM, 1531m
Is Kakia ever going to win one? It has run 4-3-2-4-3-4 in its last six and placed in four of five starts since August without saluting. D Pires and Jessie Bazan keep turning up with it, and it carries top weight again, which is the likely reason the wins keep slipping away.
Snowdonia is the alternative. It won one of its four runs in the same period, and T Baker gets it from a middle gate for S Gandy. Brave Jet is a scratching here and runs later in the night. This is a place bet on Kakia, nothing more.
Race 3: Trevor Jones Mdn Plate, 6:30PM, 1203m
A field of three-year-olds with almost nothing to go on. Geegees Last Word ran third on debut for S Gandy and gets Chloe Wells, which makes it the only runner here with a placing to its name in a raceday start. Annie’s Pride and Day Nor The Hour have had one run each without troubling the judge, and Alpinefurther is a first starter from the G J Stevenson stable with D M Ganderton. Bewicked and Onetimesometime are out.
Alpinefurther is the one that could make the form line look silly, simply because of who trains it. Watch race. If you must, a small win bet on Geegees Last Word.
Race 4: Cyril Simpson Mdn Plate, 7:00PM, 1312m
The shape matters here. Thirteen go around, several of them with no early speed shown, and Geegees Avalanche has the profile to sit handy and keep going. Its last four read 4-6-4-2, it placed in one of two runs since August, and A Darmanin rides for S Gandy. It is improving, which is more than most of this field can say.
Kion’s Kingdom brings the J L Keys and Sam Kennedy combination from barrier eight. Its form is 8-2-3-6, so it has the ability, but it finished sixth at its only run of the last three months. Each-way on Geegees Avalanche.
Race 5: Adam Trinder Hcp (C2), 7:30PM, 1312m
Adam Trinder has two runners in the race named after him, and the riding choice tells a story. E Byrne Burke rides Dubai Affair, which is two from three at Launceston. The pair have combined for 16 wins from 53 rides here, so that booking is the obvious read.
The one we want is the other Trinder runner. Vortistar won its last start, has two wins and four placings from six runs at this track, and carries one of the lightest weights in the field. Akimasa Phanthura has ridden only seven times here but placed on three of them. With Byrne Burke’s name on the stablemate, Vortistar is the one more likely to be overlooked.
Genuine Lady is the third live chance. Monica Ryan‘s runner won one and placed in both runs since August and has two wins from six here. Win bet on Vortistar, with Dubai Affair as the saver.
Race 6: Steve Donaldson (Bm68), 8:00PM, 1531m
Fighting For Gold has run twice at Launceston and won both. Those are its only two runs since August, so this is a horse in form returning to the track where it has done everything right. A Darmanin keeps the ride for M A Ganderton.
Two runs is a data point, not a guarantee. What lifts it into a strong bet is the form line around it: 3-2-2 before the break, then 1-1 since. It keeps finding a way.
Sh’bourne Power is the threat. It has placed at all three runs since August and won one of three here. Go Jeanie is the steady one, placing in four of six Launceston starts for G J Stevenson, and could fill a place again. Back Fighting For Gold to win.
Race 7: Lenny Porter (Bm60), 8:30PM, 1203m
Geegees Downpour is the course specialist the card needed. It has been placed in five of six Launceston starts, won two of them, and won its only run since August. A Darmanin rides again for S Gandy, and the sprint trip suits.
Material Madam, the stablemate, has placed in three of four runs here and is the obvious danger from the inside gate. Zuni and Baybougg have both been competitive without winning lately. Street Diva is out. Win bet on Geegees Downpour, and a strong quaddie anchor.
Race 8: Ken Hallet (Bm76), 9:00PM, 1750m
Barry Campbell runs four in an eight-horse field, and Beneficiary is the pick of them by a distance. Three wins and five placings from five Launceston starts, four wins from six runs since the start of 2025, and a form line of 2-1-1-1-1-2. It has not been out of the first two in its last six.
The only knock is that it has no run in our results data since August, so there is an element of trust about fitness. Campbell has placed 27 times from 63 runners at this track, and a stable that sends four into one race is not bringing this one along for the trip.
Tuskegee is the stablemate to respect. Sam Kennedy rides, and it has won one and placed twice from three runs since August. Thickskinned has two wins from four here and is the outside danger. Beneficiary to win, and the safest leg of a multi.
Race 9: Ray Bean Plate (C1), 9:30PM, 2297m
Matthew Brown places more than seven in every ten Launceston runners, and the stable has Shines Discreetly in here with E Byrne Burke. The horse won its last start, placed in three of six runs since August, and won one of three at this track.
Lyco Reco is the danger, placing in one of two runs since August, though it has only one start here. Da Silver Flash has gone four runs without a placing in that time and is hard to back. Win bet on Shines Discreetly.
Race 10: Brendon Larkins Hcp (C2), 10:00PM, 1750m
The last is the most even race on the card. Agadoo is the in-form one: two wins from three since August, placed in all three, and won one of its two runs at Launceston. Aiden Nunn‘s runner gets A Darmanin, who has a busy and useful night.
Wolf Junior has been in the first three at all four runs since August for Barry Campbell, and Stollaway Ned has done the same at its three runs in that time. Timely Needs is one from two here and also won recently. All four have claims. Agadoo to win, Stollaway Ned each-way.

Where the money goes
NAP: Fighting For Gold (Race 6, 8:00PM). Unbeaten at the track and unbeaten this preparation; the stats would have to turn on their head for it to run a bad race.
Value: Vortistar (Race 5, 7:30PM). The stable jockey sits on the other Trinder runner, which should push this last-start winner out in the betting. No market yet, so take a price once one appears.
Banker: Beneficiary (Race 8, 9:00PM). Never worse than second at Launceston. The only question is fitness, and the stable answers that by running it.
Each-way: Stollaway Ned (Race 10, 10:00PM). In the first three at all three runs since August and at both of its Launceston starts. That is place money in a tight finale.
Course angle: A Darmanin rides Fighting For Gold, Geegees Downpour, Geegees Avalanche and Agadoo. Four of our selections share one rider, so that rider’s night will make or break the card.
Quaddie, Races 7 to 10: Geegees Downpour, Beneficiary and Tuskegee, Shines Discreetly, Agadoo and Stollaway Ned. If Campbell’s four-runner raid in the Ken Hallet comes off, expect him to keep sending numbers to these Friday night handicaps.
