Overview
Cradle Of Jazz has won three of six starts at Morphettville and placed in five, and no other runner on Saturday’s card can match that mix of volume and strike rate here. The MS R Day stayer lines up in the 2541m Assa Abloy (Bm80) off two runs that have tapered a little, and that tension is the most interesting betting question on the card.
It isn’t the only thread running through these Morphettville racing tips. N Callow rides five runners for Phillip & Tommy Stokes, a partnership that has won six of 22 rides together at this track and placed with 14. The Sportsbet Hill Smith Stakes over 1800m sets up a third meeting between Tikkamos and Churchill Rose, who have taken one each of their last two.
The essentials: nine races on a Good to Soft turf track, first jump 12:29PM and last at 5:32PM, from a 1050m sprint out to the 2541m staying test. Only Race 1 had a live market at the time of writing, so most of what follows is form and connections rather than price.
Reading the Morphettville card
Unlike most Saturday cards, there is real course form to work with. Plenty of today’s runners have five or more starts here, and a handful have turned that experience into wins. Cradle Of Jazz and Daisydoo are the standouts, while Sir Leapalot has won two of five for a stable that wins with half its runners here.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cradle Of Jazz | 6 | 3 | 5 | 50.0 | 83.3 |
| Dobbinair | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.7 | 66.7 |
| Grand Host | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.7 | 66.7 |
| Daisydoo | 8 | 2 | 5 | 25.0 | 62.5 |
| Gold Spirit | 5 | 1 | 3 | 20.0 | 60.0 |
| All Too Mysti | 5 | 1 | 3 | 20.0 | 60.0 |
| Mintulee | 6 | 2 | 3 | 33.3 | 50.0 |
| Sir Leapalot | 5 | 2 | 2 | 40.0 | 40.0 |
Among the riders, N Callow sits on top for place strike rate from 40 rides, and Jacob Opperman and Harry Grace back up their numbers with far bigger books. Rochelle Milnes has the most rides here of anyone on the card and still finds the frame a third of the time.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| N Callow | 40 | 8 | 21 | 20.0 | 52.5 |
| Jacob Opperman | 75 | 12 | 33 | 16.0 | 44.0 |
| Harry Grace | 115 | 17 | 49 | 14.8 | 42.6 |
| Shayleigh Ingelse | 27 | 6 | 10 | 22.2 | 37.0 |
| Jake Toeroek | 101 | 12 | 37 | 11.9 | 36.6 |
| Rochelle Milnes | 160 | 14 | 55 | 8.8 | 34.4 |
On the training side, Ryan Hannemann has the hottest small sample with five winners from ten runners. The Stokes stable places more than half its starters here, and R & C Jolly and A J Gluyas both bring six runners off big Morphettville records.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryan Hannemann | 10 | 5 | 6 | 50.0 | 60.0 |
| Phillip & Tommy Stokes | 56 | 10 | 30 | 17.9 | 53.6 |
| D Clarken & O Macgillivray | 41 | 6 | 20 | 14.6 | 48.8 |
| MS N Irwin | 27 | 4 | 11 | 14.8 | 40.7 |
| A J Gluyas | 128 | 17 | 50 | 13.3 | 39.1 |
| MS R Day | 42 | 5 | 16 | 11.9 | 38.1 |
| R & C Jolly | 184 | 23 | 70 | 12.5 | 38.0 |

Race by race: Morphettville predictions
Race 1: Sportsbet Same Race Multi (Bm66), 12:29PM, 1100m
Czech Out heads the market at $3.00 with Bet Right, and the case is easy to make: a win and two placings from three runs since July, a second last start, and the inside draw in barrier 2. The trouble is five Morphettville starts without a win, plus the joint top weight.
I’d rather be with Fast Food at $3.70 with Unibet. The three-year-old won its only start, and the R & C Jolly stable has saddled 23 winners here, more than any trainer on the card. Jake Toeroek hits the frame at better than a third of his Morphettville rides, and Fast Food carries less than the two market leaders from barrier 7.
The danger is Rebel Tuesday at $3.60 with Unibet. He won both course starts, but three runs since July have produced nothing in the first three. Yourworstnightmare is scratched, leaving six.
Win bet on Fast Food.
Race 2: Kirin Ichiban Hcp (64), 1:04PM, 1200m
Cosmic Shower comes here off a win, and the form line around it is all placings: four top-three finishes from five runs in the last three months. The horse has also won at one of two Morphettville starts. Barrier 9 is workable over 1200m, and Callow is the rider I want on a Stokes runner at this track.
Olivia Marie is the one to fear. She has placed at all three course starts, won one of them, and has four placings from five recent runs. Jordyn Weatherley wins nearly a quarter of her rides here, though from a small book of 17. The catch is barrier 13, the widest in the field. Clux Star from gate 1 is a place hope, with four placings from seven recent runs. I’m A Hottie is scratched.
Cosmic Shower to win, small saver on Olivia Marie for the place. No market was up at the time of writing.
Race 3: Sportsbet Hill Smith Stakes, 1:39PM, 1800m
Which version of the Tikkamos and Churchill Rose rivalry turns up today? The two A J Gluyas three-year-olds have met three times. Tikkamos ran third and Churchill Rose sixth in a Morphettville maiden on 29 August. Tikkamos then won at Balaklava on 16 September with Churchill Rose second, before Churchill Rose turned it around at Murray Bridge on 3 October, winning the Gifford Hill Guineas (Bm66) with Tikkamos third.
I side with Tikkamos. Three runs since July have produced a win and three placings, and he has never run worse than third across those starts. Jacob Opperman places at 44% of his Morphettville rides from 75 attempts, and barrier 8 in a field of eight means there is no pressure to use him early. The step to 1800m should suit a horse who keeps finishing on.
Churchill Rose has the recent edge and carries less weight, and $43,650 in prize money since July is the most in this field. She is the main danger, no argument. Contrary is the wildcard: two wins from three recent runs for D Clarken & O Macgillivray, a stable that places with nearly half its runners here, though she ran fifth behind both Gluyas horses at Murray Bridge.
Autumn Rainbow won her last start for P G Moody & Katherine Coleman and gets Harry Grace, but one recent run leaves plenty to prove at this trip. Kosaji, second last start, is Callow’s Stokes ride and can’t be ruled out.
Each-way on Tikkamos, with a quinella linking him to Churchill Rose. Markets weren’t up.
Race 4: M&J Chickens Hcp (64), 2:14PM, 1800m
Three scratchings (Mr Trafficanti, Jenni You Think and Yarrawizardharry) leave twelve, and not one of them has won at Morphettville. Hard to have a strong view. If forced, Lunar Vista on the strength of a form line that has gone 3, 4, 3, 4, 2, 1, finishing with a win. It placed at the only course start, and barrier 7 is fine over the trip.
Goochee Gal is the danger with weight on her side: one of the lightest in the race, a win and a second from two recent runs, and Shayleigh Ingelse, who wins 22% of her 27 rides here. Chartin has four placings from five recent runs from near the bottom of the weights and is the place play.
Small win bet on Lunar Vista. Watch race for anyone keeping powder dry.
Race 5: Assa Abloy (Bm80), 2:49PM, 2541m
MS R Day has two runners in the longest race of the day, and one of them is the best course horse on the card. Cradle Of Jazz has won half of six Morphettville starts and placed in five. That is real track form, not a two-run fluke, and it sits on top of a strong campaign: two wins and five placings from six runs since July, worth $85,050.
The fair knock is the last two runs, a fifth and a fourth. At 2541m, though, the profile matters more than one flat run. This is a horse who stays, knows the circuit and has drawn barrier 3 with Connor Murtagh. Murtagh can sit handy from there without spending petrol, and over this trip that saving counts for plenty in the final 400m.
Retourne is the main danger. Two wins from four course starts, two wins and three placings from five recent runs, and the most prize money in the race since July at $86,550. Harry Grace rides, and he places at over 40% of his rides here. Retourne ran fifth last time, which levels the recent form with Cradle Of Jazz.
Suit Of Wands is the each-way type: six placings from eight recent runs, a second and fourth in her last two, light weight and barrier 2 for Rochelle Milnes. She has placed twice from three course starts without winning. Valued, with four placings from six recent runs, is the other place hope from the bottom of the weights.
Win bet on Cradle Of Jazz, my best of the day. Small exacta with Retourne. No live market at the time of writing.
Race 6: Peter Elberg Funerals Hcp (64), 3:30PM, 1200m
Harmonic Dancer places; Simply Sid wins. That’s the split. Harmonic Dancer has placed in all three Morphettville starts and in both runs since July, a third last time after a second, from barrier 4 for the Stokes and Callow team. What the horse hasn’t done is win here.
Simply Sid arrives off a win, with a second before it, and has a win and two placings from two recent runs. Will Price jumps from barrier 3, so the two will race near each other. M W Lewis has had only one placegetter from 13 runners here, which makes me lean away from Simply Sid for the win. Stomp’em, with two wins from the last three starts, is the other one in the mix, though jockey Jade Doyle has had only four rides here.
Sacred Chord and Attain are scratched. Each-way on Harmonic Dancer.
Race 7: Access Hardware (Bm80), 4:12PM, 1050m
Is two from three enough? Real Deluxe has won twice at three Morphettville visits and took one of two runs since July, collecting $34,500. The fifth last start was a blip after a win, and MS N Irwin places with four in ten of her runners here. Barrier 8 is middling for 1050m, but this is a horse who handles the track.
Daisydoo is the volume course horse, two wins and five placings from eight starts, and barrier 2 gives her the rails run. She ran eighth last time, though, after a second and a win. Up The Den won last start and shares the lightest weight, which makes him dangerous in a short sprint. Grand Host, with Harry Grace and four placings from six course starts, rounds out the exotics.
Real Deluxe to win, saver on Daisydoo.
Race 8: Adelaide Galvanising Industries Hcp (68), 4:57PM, 1600m
Somewhere Soon has won two of four starts at Morphettville and arrives with a second and a win in her two most recent runs. She is also the lightest horse in the field, which is a big tick in a 1600m handicap. A J Gluyas has 17 winners from 128 runners here. The one doubt is Rose Hammond, who has one win from 34 rides at the track, but she places at nearly a third of them and barrier 5 is clean.
Diversity is the danger, a winner at her only course start and a winner within two runs since July. Shadow Eagle won last time but has gone seven course starts without a win. All Too Mysti, with three placings from five here for the Jolly stable and Callow, is the place option. Itsukushima is scratched.
Win bet on Somewhere Soon, and she goes in the multi.
Race 9: Sportsbet Fast Form (Bm70), 5:32PM, 1200m
Seventeen runners over 1200m means traffic, and the draw does plenty of the talking. From The Block, Riche d’Amour and Star Sirius are stuck in gates 15 to 17, so I want a horse who can hold a spot.
Brave Apache fits. The form line of 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 1 has no finish worse than second, the horse won its only run since July, and barrier 8 is central. Harry Grace is on, and the jockey wins more races here than anyone else in today’s line-up. Indianna Weinert has had six runners here without a win, which is the one soft spot.
Riche d’Amour has placed at all four Morphettville starts without winning and keeps finishing in the first three, but gate 15 makes it a place bet. Sir Leapalot has won two of five here for Ryan Hannemann and is the each-way roughie. From The Block has two recent wins but carries the most weight from barrier 16.
Brave Apache to win, Riche d’Amour for the place.

Where the money goes
NAP: Cradle Of Jazz (Race 5, 2:49PM). Three course wins, a staying trip that rewards experience and an economical draw. Two flat runs aside, nothing else in the race has proven itself around this circuit the same way.
Value: Fast Food (Race 1, 12:29PM). $3.70 with Unibet for a debut winner from the biggest winning stable at Morphettville, priced behind a favourite who has never won here.
Banker: Somewhere Soon (Race 8, 4:57PM). Half her course starts end in a win, the recent form is first and second, and she gets in light.
Each-way: Harmonic Dancer (Race 6, 3:30PM). Placed at all three course starts and both runs since July. The win is the question; the frame shouldn’t be.
Course angle: N Callow on a Stokes runner. Together they have won six of 22 at Morphettville and placed with 14, and they team up five times today, including Cosmic Shower and Harmonic Dancer.
If Callow keeps landing the Stokes rides at this strike rate, his book will be the first place I look every time the Adelaide Saturday card comes out.
