Overview
Tempted has raced at Randwick five times and won all five. On Saturday the C Maher four-year-old jumps from barrier 1 in The Tab Everest, and the only horse on the card with a cleaner form line is drawn ten gates wider: Ka Ying Rising.
That clash is the reason most people will tune in, but these Randwick racing tips cover a ten-race card that runs from 12:30PM to 6:10PM on a Soft track, and there are two or three spots I like even more than the Everest. The Mona Lisa returns to a track where the five-year-old has won four of seven. Autumn Glow lines up in a five-horse King Charles III Stakes with four Randwick wins from five starts. And the C J Waller and J B McDonald partnership is everywhere, from the Reginald Allen to the King Charles.
Markets were only up for the first two races at the time of writing, so most of the odds talk below is limited to the early legs. Scratchings are heavy in places, and I’ve flagged them race by race.
Randwick racing tips: what the Soft track and the stats tell us
Unlike most meetings, Randwick on a day like this brings plenty of course form. Eight of today’s runners have had four or more starts here, and the top of that list reads like a shortlist for the big races.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tempted | 5 | 5 | 5 | 100.0 | 100.0 |
| Autumn Glow | 5 | 4 | 5 | 80.0 | 100.0 |
| Joliestar | 4 | 3 | 4 | 75.0 | 100.0 |
| God’s Window | 4 | 2 | 4 | 50.0 | 100.0 |
| The Mona Lisa | 7 | 4 | 5 | 57.1 | 71.4 |
| Unleeshing | 6 | 3 | 5 | 50.0 | 83.3 |
| Ceolwulf | 6 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 33.3 |
McDonald is the rider to follow. Nobody else on the card comes close to his volume and strike rate here, and he hits the frame at better than half his Randwick rides.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| J B McDonald | 143 | 35 | 74 | 24.5 | 51.8 |
| N Rawiller | 116 | 19 | 54 | 16.4 | 46.5 |
| Siena Grima | 102 | 13 | 47 | 12.8 | 46.1 |
| Zac Lloyd | 141 | 16 | 64 | 11.3 | 45.4 |
| C Schofield | 108 | 14 | 46 | 13.0 | 42.6 |
| Tim Clark | 115 | 17 | 48 | 14.8 | 41.7 |
Among the trainers, Waller brings the numbers with 365 Randwick runners, while Joseph Pride places with just over half of his starters and Maher wins with close to one in five.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Joseph Pride | 94 | 11 | 48 | 11.7 | 51.1 |
| Michael Freedman | 62 | 8 | 29 | 12.9 | 46.8 |
| G Waterhouse & A Bott | 116 | 15 | 52 | 12.9 | 44.8 |
| C J Waller | 365 | 50 | 161 | 13.7 | 44.1 |
| C Maher | 124 | 22 | 47 | 17.7 | 37.9 |

Race by race: Randwick predictions
Race 1: Big Dance Wild Card Hcp, 12:30PM, 1600m
Matias has the gate, the course record and the weight, and I’m happy to start the day there. The four-year-old has had two Randwick starts for a win and a second, draws barrier 1 with K McEvoy, and carries one of the lighter weights in the field. The form line of 1-8314 is solid without being spectacular, and the latest run was a fourth.
The market agrees, with Matias at $2.10 with Unibet, so there’s no hidden value on top. It’s A Knockout at $3.80 with Unibet is second favourite, but one placing from four runs since mid-July and no wins from three Randwick visits make that price short.
The one I’d rather be with at odds is Pier Pressure. K A Lees has three left in this after Lord Of Biscay was scratched, and Pier Pressure has run third at each of the last two starts. Vivy Air is also out.
Win bet on Matias, small each-way on Pier Pressure at $12 with Unibet.
Race 2: Bisley Workwear Reginald Allen Qlty, 1:05PM, 1400m
Does anything here beat Saffron Veil? The three-year-old has run second, second and then won, three placings from three starts lately, and McDonald rides for Waller from barrier 7. That pairing has 93 Randwick rides together for 19 wins, and Saffron Veil is the pick of the four the stable runs here.
Calamari Ring carries top weight for Maher with B Melham aboard, but the form has tailed off since the win at the start of the line, and the only Randwick visit ended out of the placings. Pin Up Sheila won the first two starts before a sixth last time.
The real threat is Low Key. G Waterhouse and A Bott have the youngster coming off a win after a second, with a win and a placing from two runs in the last three months, and Tim Clark rides. Barrier 11 is the catch.
Saffron Veil is $2.50 with Bet Right, a fair price for the most reliable horse in the race. Win bet, and use Saffron Veil in multis. Low Key at $8.50 with Unibet is the saver.
Race 3: Asahi Super Dry Angst Stakes, 1:40PM, 1600m
The Mona Lisa is the Randwick horse on this card. Seven starts here for four wins and five placings is real course form, not a couple of lucky days, and the recent run backs it up with three wins from four starts in the last three months. A J Calder has three wins from nine Randwick rides and the P & M Cave stable has won with half of its eight runners here, small samples both, but they point the same way.
Unleeshing is the danger and has a course record almost as good, three wins and five placings from six Randwick starts. The form line of 152221 shows a horse that rarely runs a bad race, and Bjorn Baker’s runner has placed at all three starts in the last 90 days. Barrier 11 is the problem, while The Mona Lisa jumps from 7 and should get a softer run.
Polymnia has hit the frame in three of four starts here and is the each-way type underneath. You Wahng and It’s A Knockout are both scratched.
Win bet on The Mona Lisa. I’d box Unleeshing in the quinella.
Race 4: The Agency Real Estate ST Leger Stakes, 2:15PM, 2600m
Two scratchings change the shape of this. Juja Kibo, placed at all three recent runs, and Anthracite are out, which leaves So You Are as the clear form horse. Bjorn Baker’s stayer comes in off two straight wins, has won two of three runs this preparation and placed in all three, and has a win and a second from two Randwick starts. Tommy Berry rides from barrier 1, the perfect draw for a race over 2600m.
Bella Montagna is the one I’d fear. The Waterhouse and Bott runner gets in with the lightest weight, placed on the only Randwick start, and Tim Clark knows how to ride a staying race. Wuddzz ran third at the only recent start and is a long shot for a place.
Win bet on So You Are.
Race 5: The Kosciuszko, 2:50PM, 1200m
Two horses, two very similar profiles. Cruizingthestars has won four of the last five on the form line, scored at the only run in the last 90 days, and has a win and a second from two Randwick starts. Lord Remlap has won both Randwick starts and ran third last time. J R Collett on Cruizingthestars has barrier 2 and the light weight, while Lord Remlap draws 9.
The draw settles it for me. Over 1200m on a Soft track, saving ground from gate 2 is worth a lot, and Cruizingthestars should get a cheap run behind the speed. Lord Remlap is the danger if MS M Weir finds cover from the middle.
Chidiac, with McDonald, has a strong form line but no runs in the last three months. Pride To Follow, Where’stheprofit and Ishikari are scratched.
Win bet on Cruizingthestars, saver on Lord Remlap.
Race 6: Toyota Forklifts Sydney Stakes, 3:25PM, 1200m
The market had not opened at the time of writing, and this is a big field where my view is soft. Charm Stone is my pick. The only run in the past three months was a third worth $180,000 in prize money, which says the class is there, and C Schofield rides. Barrier 13 is the worry.
Skybird won last start and is a non runner in the Everest, so lines up here instead. The danger is the draw again, from barrier 18 with Melham.
Signor Tortoni and Beadman each have a win and two placings from three Randwick starts and are the course runners to include in exotics. Napoleonic, Wanaruah, Golden Straand and Point And Shoot are scratched.
Small win bet on Charm Stone. Not one to go big on.
Race 7: The Tab Everest, 4:15PM, 1200m
Tempted against Ka Ying Rising. That’s the race, and the racecard can only take us so far with the second horse. Ka Ying Rising has a form line of 1-11111, Zac Purton in the saddle, and no runs at Randwick or anywhere in the last 90 days in the stats I have. The form figures say unbeaten for six. The draw says barrier 11.
Tempted, on the other hand, comes with all the evidence I could ask for. Five Randwick starts for five wins and $2.31 million. Two wins from two recent runs. A form line of 2-11111. C Maher has a better strike rate here than Waller, Baker or Waterhouse and Bott, and C Schofield wins with 13% of his Randwick rides. Barrier 1 means Schofield can choose to lead or take a sit on the fence, and Tempted carries less weight than Ka Ying Rising.
If I’m wrong, it’s because Ka Ying Rising is simply the better horse. Purton has only eight Randwick rides for one win, but a jockey’s course record matters far less when the horse is this good on paper.
Joliestar is the best of the rest. Three wins from four Randwick starts, placed every time, and a second at the only recent run for Waller and McDonald from barrier 5. Angel Capital, Jimmysstar and Blue Door all won last start and fill out the exotics.
Win bet on Tempted. Each-way on Joliestar. No prices were up at the time of writing.
Race 8: Silver Eagle, 4:50PM, 1300m
Decorum and Skyhook both arrive having won two from two in the last three months. Decorum is the one I want, because of the gate and the course knowledge. Michael Freedman’s runner has a win from two Randwick starts and draws barrier 2 for Tim Clark, while Skyhook ran unplaced on the only visit here and draws barrier 5.
Skyhook still has the better recent prize money, $340,000 from those two wins, and three straight wins at the end of the form line. If the four-year-old handles the track this time, Decorum will have a fight.
Night Agent has placed in all three Randwick starts with a win, and McDonald rides, but barrier 14 makes it hard. Estremo and Surf’s Up are out of this one and run in the last.
Win bet on Decorum, saver on Skyhook.
Race 9: King Charles III Stakes, 5:35PM, 1600m
Waller has three of the five runners, and the best of them looks the best in the race by a distance. Autumn Glow has won four of five Randwick starts and placed in all five, has won both recent runs for $1.16 million, and carries two kilograms less than the other four. McDonald rides from barrier 4.
God’s Window, also from the stable, is the clear second pick. Four Randwick starts for two wins and four placings, a win last start, and Siena Grima on top. Militarize, the third Waller runner, has no placings from three runs since mid-July.
Ceolwulf has placed twice in six Randwick starts without a win, and 10-year-old Just Folk has placed at all three recent runs without winning. Pride Of Jenni is scratched.
Win bet on Autumn Glow. This is the multi leg of the day.
Race 10: The Hkjc World Pool (Bm88), 6:10PM, 1400m
Theblade has a win and a second from two Randwick starts and a win from two runs this preparation, and the M, W & J Hawkes stable wins with nearly 18% of its runners here. Dylan Gibbons rides from barrier 13, which isn’t ideal, but a fourth last time after two wins suggests the horse is still going well.
Cross Tasman is the obvious danger. Four straight seconds, both recent runs placed, and Zac Lloyd hits the frame at close to half his Randwick rides. The problem is winning, and from barrier 14 that won’t be any easier.
Ertijaaj won the only start lately and gets in light from barrier 4. Presser and Ruination are scratched.
Win bet on Theblade, with Cross Tasman in the quinella.

Where the money goes
NAP: Tempted (Race 7, 4:15PM). Five runs at Randwick, five wins, the inside gate and a weight edge over the main rival. If you want to be with one horse on Everest day, this is it.
Value: Pier Pressure (Race 1, 12:30PM). Third at each of the last two starts and $12 with Unibet in a race where the favourite is short. Each-way.
Banker: Autumn Glow (Race 9, 5:35PM). Four wins from five Randwick starts, placed every time, two from two lately, and only four rivals.
Each-way: Joliestar (Race 7, 4:15PM). Placed at every Randwick start, with three wins. Behind the big two, nobody in the Everest has a more consistent course record.
Course angle: C J Waller with J B McDonald. The pair have teamed up 93 times at Randwick for 19 wins and 48 placings, and today they combine with Saffron Veil, Joliestar and Autumn Glow.
If The Mona Lisa wins again today, that will make five Randwick wins and the first name I look for when the autumn carnival comes back around.
