MT Gambier Racing Tips 7 Aug 2026 — can Side Piece keep rolling?
MT Gambier Racing Tips 7 Aug 2026 — can Side Piece keep rolling?
There’s one question worth building your whole Friday around at the Mount: does Side Piece just keep finding a way, or has the handicapper finally caught up? The form says he’s in a purple patch, the weight says he’ll have to earn it, and the race shape says he probably gets his chance anyway.
That’s the spine of this MT Gambier meeting, but it’s not the only angle. Both maidens look like the type where you back a runner with a clear map and a clear trajectory, rather than getting seduced by “upside” that might not exist. We’ve got four races on turf, ranging from a sharp 984m to a proper staying test at 2242m, and I’ll take you race-by-race with a firm opinion where it’s deserved and a straight “watch race” call where it isn’t. You’re here for MT Gambier racing tips that read like a real form guide chat, not a brochure, so let’s get to it.
MT Gambier — the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two starts here, which is useful context but not something you build a whole case around.
What is worth using is who rides the track well and who trains well here, because those samples are bigger.
Jockeys who consistently measure MT Gambier (5+ rides)
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tom Madden | 35 | 5 | 19 | 14.29% | 54.29% |
| Jack Hill | 24 | 3 | 11 | 12.50% | 45.83% |
| Rochelle Milnes | 12 | 1 | 5 | 8.33% | 41.67% |
| Kayla Crowther | 27 | 3 | 11 | 11.11% | 40.74% |
| Harry Grace | 23 | 5 | 7 | 21.74% | 30.43% |
Trainers with a real body of work here (5+ runners)
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| P A Chow | 10 | 2 | 7 | 20.00% | 70.00% |
| Tom Dabernig | 15 | 3 | 5 | 20.00% | 33.33% |
| Aaron Purcell | 17 | 2 | 8 | 11.76% | 47.06% |
| Bob & Kane Post | 19 | 3 | 5 | 15.79% | 26.32% |
| Wayne Walters | 42 | 1 | 9 | 2.38% | 21.43% |
On the horse side, the only runner today with a meaningful little MT Gambier profile is Pianta, who’s had four goes here for a win and another placing. That’s an emerging pattern, not a love affair, but it matters in a staying race where plenty of these simply haven’t proven they handle the circuit.

Race-by-race tips and previews
Race 1: Midfield Meats Mdn Plate — 13:05, 984m
The race asks a simple question: who actually wants to win a maiden over a sharp 984m? I’m with Immortally Lucky (barrier 1) because the profile screams “ready to land a blow”. He’s a 3yo with a light weight (119.0) and his form reads 7 then 2, which is exactly the sort of second-up improvement you want to see in these country maidens. The inside draw gives Ms L Stojakovic options: hold a spot, or let speed go and pop out at the right time. Either way, you’re not burning petrol early from gate 10 and praying.
The danger is Calm The Press (gate 4, 127.8). He’s the older, more exposed type, but he’s also the one arriving in better recent order with 088-52. Rawiller on is a serious booking, and if the race turns into a messy scramble where racecraft matters more than turn of foot, he can bully his way into it.
One note on track history: Immortally Lucky doesn’t have recorded course stats to lean on, while Mai has had one run here and finished fourth, and Northern Gold has had one run here and finished seventh. That’s context, not a deciding factor.
Staking: Win bet Immortally Lucky. Small saver on Calm The Press if you’re the cautious type.
Race 2: The Border Watch Mdn Plate — 13:40, 1422m
I’m starting with the stable intent angle here. Shujinko (gate 2) looks placed to win a maiden, not to “get fitness”. The form 537-45 tells you he’s been around the mark without being a tease, and this trip looks ideal for a horse who can hold a midfield position and build. Rochelle Milnes doesn’t need to overcomplicate it from the inside alley: hold ground early, peel when it matters, and make them chase.
Blackhill Boy (gate 1) is the obvious danger because he gets every possible favour in the run, and the Rawiller booking makes you respect him even if his form (64-647) doesn’t shout “winner”. The knock is that he’s had his chances and keeps finding one or two better. If he controls the fence and the race becomes a sprint from the 500m, he can pinch it, but I’d rather back the horse who looks like he can put a race away.
There’s a wild card with Piklemegranmother (gate 8). She’s had one run at MT Gambier and ran second, so she’s already shown she handles the place. She’s also coming off 5-7052, which says she’s trending up. She’s the exotics magnet if you’re playing wider.
Staking: Win bet Shujinko. Quinella saver with Blackhill Boy if you want to protect the soft run from barrier 1.
Race 3: Minrosa Hcp (54) — 14:15, 984m
This is the one race on the card where I’m not pretending I’ve got a bulldozer edge. The weights are messy, the recent form is mixed, and over 984m at this level you can get a “blink and you miss it” result if the speed collapses or the leader pinches a break.
If you force me to land somewhere, I’ll lean to Zuetoro (barrier 1) because the map makes sense and the form 4125-6 suggests he’s been competitive in the right grade. He doesn’t need to improve lengths, he just needs a clean jump and a ride that keeps him out of trouble.
The danger is Emmooki Magic (gate 2, 123.4). The form 308001 is chaotic, but it also says the ceiling is high enough to win if he turns up in the right mood. Caitlin Tootell gets him from a draw that keeps him in the race without using him up.
Staking: Watch race, no bet for me. If you’re playing, keep it small and keep it simple.
Race 4: Sportsbet (Bm58) — 14:50, 2242m
The contender story writes itself: Side Piece comes here chasing a hat-trick and then some, with a form line that reads like a winning habit (625511). The pushback is obvious too. He cops 135.5, and that’s not a “just carry it” number when you’re stretching to 2242m. Still, I’m sticking with him as the day’s best bet because he’s the one runner on the card whose recent results actually back up confidence. In his last 90 days he’s had six runs for two wins and another placing, with an average finish around the top three and a half. That’s not a fluke spike, that’s a horse reliably turning up.
Tom Madden is a positive layer. At MT Gambier he rides the track as well as anyone with meaningful volume: 35 rides for 19 placings and five wins. He gets races run to suit more often than not, and that matters in a staying race where the wrong move at the 800m costs you the whole afternoon.
The main danger is Pianta (gate 10). His overall form (227123) is rock-solid, and he’s got an emerging MT Gambier record too: four starts here for a win and another placing. If Side Piece feels the weight late, Pianta is the one most likely to grind past and punish him.
Don’t ignore Wimmera Star either (gate 3). He’s not as sexy on paper, but he maps well and Rawiller can give him a dream run just off the speed.
Staking: Win bet Side Piece. If you’re playing exactas, save with Pianta to beat him rather than trying to get cute with four-horse boxes.

The plays
I’m not trying to make this card harder than it is. My money leans into the one horse with a proper, recent winning profile and a jockey who repeatedly rides MT Gambier well.
NAP: Side Piece (Race 4, 14:50). Winning form plus a rider who hits the frame more than half the time here is enough to act on, even under the big weight.
Value: Shujinko (Race 2, 13:40). Inside draw over 1422m and a profile that says he’s ready to finish off a maiden. He’s the type I want onside before the market decides he’s “due”.
Banker for multis: Side Piece. If you only anchor one runner on this program, make it the in-form stayer rather than guessing in the 984m handicap.
Each-way angle: Pianta (Race 4). Four course runs with a win and a placing is enough to respect in a staying race, and his current form line makes him the clear saver.
Course angle to remember: Madden at this track. He keeps putting himself in the finish here, and it’s the sort of edge that stays useful when the fields get more competitive.
Next time you see this track hosting another staying race, start by asking who’s proven they can handle the circuit and the rhythm of it, because the Mount can make tourists look very ordinary late.

Shop around bookmaker prices close to jump time, especially in the maidens where late money often tells the real story. If you’re comparing, focus on win odds for the straight bet, and check each-way terms if you’re playing Pianta as the saver in the staying race.
