Pakenham Racing Tips 5 Oct 2026 — can Shinn own the day?
Opening
When you rock up to Pakenham on the synthetic and see B Shinn taking rides, you don’t overthink it. He rides this place like he’s got the cheat codes: 9 rides here for 3 wins and 7 placings, so he’s hitting the frame almost every time he jumps on one at this track. That matters on an All Weather day when positioning and timing turns races into patterns.
This set of Pakenham racing tips is built for speed of decision. Five races on the Pakenham All Weather, mostly maidens, plenty of unknown ceilings and a couple of runners with just enough exposed form to lean on. I’ve kept it opinionated, and I’ve kept it practical: who I’d back, who can beat them, and where I’d save the ammo for a better race.
Pakenham — the setup
All five races are on the All Weather and the fields scream “maiden day”, which means we’re reading intent as much as numbers. Barriers still matter, but less in a pure sense and more in what they let the jockey do: settle where they want without burning fuel.
Limited repeat course form across today’s fields. Most runners either have one or two Pakenham visits or none at all, so I’m not building the whole card around track specialist talk. Where the course stats do help is with the riders and the stables who repeatedly place their horses well here.

Race-by-race
Race 1: Ladbrokes Turn On Flexi Multi Mdn Plate — 13:05, 1531m
Prime Force looks the cleanest way into the day because the map gifts him the first advantage you want on this surface: barrier 1. Carleen Hefel can hold a spot, not get dragged back, and make it a 600 metre race. His form line is thin but honest for a 3yo maiden, and this is the right kind of race to turn “promising” into “winning”.
The other reason I’m happy to be with him is stable confidence by volume. Moody and Coleman don’t just show up at Pakenham, they strike: 83 runners here for 19 wins and 42 placings. They place their horses where they can win, and this looks like one of those placements.
The danger is Viking Kid purely on the human edge. Shinn rides this track better than anyone in today’s jockey room, and even from gate 9 he can slide in and launch at the right time. If he gets cover and Prime Force gets cluttered away on the fence, that Shinn timing can be the difference.
Play: Win bet Prime Force. Small saver on Viking Kid if you want insurance against the Shinn factor.
Race 2: Ladbrokes New Betslip Mdn Plate — 13:35, 1531m
Here’s the question that matters: which one of these older maidens is still improving, rather than just repeating the same run in a different postcode. I’ll side with Diesel Desmond. The form reads like a horse who keeps being thereabouts without landing the punch, but the run of figures still says he’s holding his level and turning up to race.
Over the last 90 days he’s had 3 runs for 1 placing and an average finish of 4th. That’s not a killer profile, but it’s better than most of these, and he draws gate 5 which keeps him out of trouble. Luke Nolen taking the ride also matters. He’s ridden 60 times at Pakenham for 11 wins and 27 placings, a proper sample, and he’s the sort who can make a limited horse look more effective simply by keeping it in the race.
More Foxie is the one who can beat him off raw upside. One career run, finished 3rd, and gets J Mott, who rides this circuit strongly. If More Foxie takes a step forward, Diesel Desmond might have to settle for another cheque.
Play: Each-way Diesel Desmond. Exacta saver Diesel Desmond and More Foxie.
Race 3: Ladbrokes Hosted Pots Mdn Plate — 14:10, 1531m
The market will probably try to talk you into something with more exposed consistency, but I’m happy to be a bit sharper here. Silky Seth is the one I want on side because he’s turned himself into a professional placegetter, and that’s often the final step before they finally win a maiden on the synthetic.
He comes in with a long run of “nearly” performances: 333453. From gate 13 it’s not a cuddle, but J Mott has the experience at this track to make wide draws less of a panic. He’s ridden 112 times here for 18 wins and 45 placings, so you’re not guessing whether he can execute a plan around Pakenham, you’re paying for competence.
The horse I fear most is Trouble’n Paradise. Ben, Will and JD Hayes are not the leading strike-rate barn at this venue, but they run enough horses here to know what works, and Jye McNeil has a big book of experience at the track. Trouble’n Paradise brings form that says he’s competitive at the trip and won’t be intimidated if the race turns tactical.
Play: Win bet Silky Seth if you’re getting a fair price. If he’s short, go each-way and live with the result.
Race 4: Ladbrokes Switch Mdn Plate — 14:45, 1312m
This is the best betting race on the card because it’s got two things I trust: a runner with a positive last start profile and a map that should let it happen again. Nishioka appeals straight away. He ran 2nd last time, and he gets gate 3 here, which gives him options at 1312 metres.
There’s also a little extra in the recent profile. Over the last 90 days he has 1 run for 1 placing, average finish 2nd. It’s only one run, so I’m not pretending it’s a trend, but it tells you he’s arrived in some sort of order and doesn’t look like a serial non-winner.
The danger is The Troubleshooter. He’s the kind that keeps turning up and running well enough to test you, and he’s already proven he can handle Pakenham: placed on his only start here, finishing 2nd. Put Nolen on, give him gate 7, and he can absolutely be the one rolling into the race at the right time while others look for gaps.
Play: Win bet Nishioka. Quinella Nishioka with The Troubleshooter as cover.

Race 5: Ladbrokes Flex Your Multi Stays Alive Mdn Plate — 15:20, 1750m
This last one is where the race shape does the talking. 1750 metres on the All Weather often becomes a positioning war more than a sprint home, and I want the horse who looks like it’ll land in the first half without doing anything silly.
Corviglia is the pick. He’s been close up in similar grade and the current form line (3-8422) says he’s got a habit of putting himself in the finish. Barrier 6 is a sweet spot at this trip, and J Mott is a plus when you want calm decision-making rather than an overconfident mid-race move.
There’s a stable angle too. Alexander Rae has 17 runners at Pakenham for 5 wins and 10 placings, which is not an accident at this track. That’s the kind of strike that tells you the stable understands the surface and the placement.
The horse that can blow it up is Vantaa. He’s a 3yo with a 2 next to his name and he gets a draw that’s not hopeless. If he steps forward even a length, he can be the one with the turn of foot when the older legs start to feel the trip.
Play: Corviglia to win. If you’re playing exotics, include Vantaa as the obvious improver.
The plays
NAP: Nishioka (Race 4, 14:45). Second last start, low draw, and a race that sets up for a horse who can hold a spot and quicken. That’s the simplest bet on the program.
Value: Prime Force (Race 1, 13:05). Gate 1 in a 3yo maiden is a real weapon here, and the Moody and Coleman Pakenham record is strong enough to trust when the form is still forming.
Banker for multis: Corviglia (Race 5, 15:20). Reliable recent pattern and barrier 6 at 1750m is the kind of set-up that avoids bad luck.
Each-way play: Diesel Desmond (Race 2, 13:35). He’s not a flash horse, but his last 90 days say he’s at least capable of running into the money, and Nolen at this track is always a steadying influence.
Course angle to keep: When Shinn turns up at Pakenham, treat his mount like it’s a length better than it looks on paper. If he keeps riding the place at this strike rate, he’ll be the angle worth following every synthetic meeting.
