Bets For The Epsom Handicap at Randwick

Epsom Day is one of the most anticipated days of the year on the racing calendar, featuring a card packed with Group One races. The highlight of the afternoon at Randwick Racecourse is the Epsom Handicap, a contest first run in 1865. It takes place over 1,600 metres and is open to three-year-olds and above.

Here are the best bets for the Sydney Carnival Everest at Randwick on Epsom Day.

BEST BET: Autumn Glow @ $2.30 with Boom Bet

Race no 8 (Epsom Handicap)

Autumn Glow will put her 100% record on the line in the Group One Epsom Handicap this Saturday, and although this will be the toughest test of her career so far, she has what it takes to be victorious.

Chris Waller’s mare will be fine-tuned for this race as she has already had two starts in the campaign. She prevailed by a narrow margin in the Group Three Darley Toy Show (1100m) on heavy ground at Randwick, while more recently she landed the Group Two Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill.

Waller is a trainer who knows all about victory in the Epsom Handicap. He has won the Group One contest six times, with Winx (2015), Kolding (2019) and Rediener (2023) being some of his most notable winners. His latest mate has the potential to go on to be a superstar, just like many of his previous horses.

The one concern for Autumn Glow ahead of this race is her barrier draw. She has been drawn in stall 14 of 14. Jockey Kerrin McEvoy is, however, experienced enough to overcome that position. If McEvoy and Autumn Glow can get a clear passage through the race, they will take some beating.

SECOND BEST BET: SHIKI @ $2.30 with Boom Bet

Race no 3 (Gimcrack Stakes)

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott could have one of the most talented two-year-old fillies in training on their hands with Shiki. The daughter of Too Darn Hot was sold for $420,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The well-bred filly looked a million dollars at the barrier trial at Randwick earlier this month. She ran the fastest time on the day, which is quite impressive, given there were 60 horses across nine trials.

Shiki is related to Group Two winners, and based on how she finished her trial at Randwick, she could be set for stakes success herself. Waterhouse and Bott’s filly completed the final 600 metres in 33.46 seconds. She looks the star attraction in the two-year-old races on Epsom Day.

BEST VALUE: PRIVATE HARRY@ $4.20 with Boom Bet

Race no 7 (Premiere Stakes)

The Group Two Premiere Stakes is one of the best races on the card at Randwick on Saturday, with Briasa, Jimmysstar and Private Harry all set to be involved. Connections of each of those horses will be looking for a big run ahead of the Everest.

On paper, there is very little between the three leading runners, but the value in the betting lies with Private Harry. He has won five of his six races so far, with his only defeat coming last time out in the Group Two Yarraman Park Shorts at Randwick. If you put a line through that run, he would probably go off as the favourite here. Take Nathan Doyle’s runner to bounce back with a big performance.
