Best Bets For The Metropolitan at Randwick
The Metropolitan is one of the feature Group One races at Randwick this Saturday. It takes place over 2,400 metres and is open to three-year-olds and older. The race was won in 2024 by Land Legend.
Here are the best bets for The Metropolitan and some of the supporting contests on the 10-race card at Randwick.
BEST BET: Soul Of Spain @ £5.50 with Colossal
Race 9 (The Metropolitan)
Soul Of Spain booked his spot in the Group One Metropolitan with victory in the Newcastle Gold Cup last month. The four-year-old showcased his stamina in the race over 2300 metres, staying on strongly to beat eight other rivals.
Trainer Chris Waller has excelled with his stayers in recent years. Soul Of Spain’s victory in the Newcastle Gold Cup was the trainer’s seventh success in the last 11 years. Based on the Irish-bred horse’s six appearances in Australia, he looks set to be his latest star and follow what Land Legend achieved in the race for Waller in 2024.
Jockey Zac Lloyd gave the four-year-old an excellent ride at Newcastle. He held him up at the back end of the field until the final 400 metres. Expect similar tactics to be adopted in The Metropolitan, with Waller’s gelding doing his best work in the closing stages of the race, utilising his impressive speed in the home straight.
SECOND BEST BET: IDLE FLYER @ £2.60 with Colossal
Race 5
Idle Flyer has been faultless so far this season, with two victories from two starts. Her latest triumph came at Randwick, where she won a handicap contest over 1400 metres. She overcame a wide barrier draw on good ground.
This Melbourne Storm Mile is a much tougher assignment for the four-year-old mare, but she is going to be helped by the weights. She will only need to carry 52kg on her back, which means she will be getting weight from the majority of her rivals here.
Matthew Smith’s runner remains open to improvement, so take her to complete her hat-trick and maintain her unbeaten start to the season.
BEST VALUE: DISNECK @ £7.60 with Colossal
Race 10
The Kia Brisbane Broncos Sprint is the final race on the card at Randwick, and it is arguably the most competitive. Kerguelen sits at the top of the betting for this race, but there are plenty of reasons to take him on. The best value is with six-time winner, Disneck, who is one of the most experienced sprinters in this field.
Disneck has had three runs so far this season, and his best effort came last time at this course when he was third of 10 runners. The five-year-old should build on that run, and if he does, he can scoop the first prize for trainer Bjorn Baker.
