This is the race where the market usually gets seduced by the last-start winner, but I’m leaning into the horse who keeps running well without needing everything to fall perfectly. Christmas Star comes here with “2-42412” form and he’s a proven Sapphire Coast performer with three runs here for three placings, including one win. That’s an emerging pattern at the track, not a fluke.
He also gets the right jockey for this circuit. Pierre Boudvillain has 18 rides at Sapphire Coast for 6 wins, and he places half the time here. When he’s on something that maps to land in the first half without burning petrol, I take notice.
Zoutempus is the obvious danger. That “9-77117” form tells you he’s either flying or falling in a heap, and you’ll know early which version you’re getting. From barrier 2 he can hold a spot and make it hard for those drawn awkwardly.
I’m not ignoring Pleasurize either. “22143-” is honest as it comes, and if they overdo it up front, she’s the type to be the last one still finding late.

Race 3: Kitty’s Bar Club Sapphire Country Boosted Mdn Plate — 14:25, 1099m
Maiden sprint, plenty of ways to lose money, but I can still have a bet if I’m getting a runner with tactical speed and a jockey who rides this place well. Stormy Reign is that horse. The form “375-23” tells you she’s been around the mark, and she’s already placed on her only run at Sapphire Coast. Again, one run isn’t a trend, but it’s a positive tick in a race full of unknowns.
She’s drawn 6, which should let Teaghan Martin (three placings from five rides here, so she does find the money often enough) park her where she can build. If this turns into a sit-and-sprint, I’d rather be on the filly who can hold a spot than the one charging from the carpark.
Reds Express is the danger. He’s placed on his only start here and Jack Martin is a big upgrade in these races because he makes better decisions at the 600m than most. The query is whether Reds Express has the punch to finish it off or just keep being “around them”.
Staking: Small win bet Stormy Reign. If the price is skinny, downgrade to a place bet and move on.
Race 4: Club Sapphire Merimbula Cup Country Boosted (Bm58) — 15:05, 1755m
The longer trip changes the whole feel of the meeting. Over 1755m at Sapphire Coast, I want a horse who can absorb tempo changes and still quicken, not just a sprinter trying to steal it. He’s not winning, but he’s turning up every time and doing his job.
He’s drawn 2, which is exactly what you want in a busy field at this trip. If he lands one-one or three back the fence with cover, he should get his chance to break the run of seconds. The knock is obvious: if he’s got a habit of finding one better, you don’t want to take unders. But from this draw, he gets fewer excuses.
