Overview
Saffron Veil is the best bet of the day. The three-year-old has run second, second and then won from three recent starts, and gets the Waller and McDonald combination at Randwick, a pairing with 19 wins from 93 rides together at the track.
That is one of three selections drawn from ten meetings on a huge Saturday. Saffron Veil and the value pick both have live prices; the quaddie anchor’s market at Randwick had not opened when this was written.
The best bet
Saffron Veil, Randwick Race 2, 1:05, 2.60 with Unibet.
Three placings from three starts lately, and the last of them a win. McDonald rides for Waller from barrier 7, and Saffron Veil is the pick of the four the stable runs in the Reginald Allen Quality. Calamari Ring carries top weight for Maher, but the form has tailed off since the win at the start of the line, and its only Randwick visit ended out of the placings.
The real threat is Low Key. G Waterhouse and A Bott bring the youngster off a win after a second, with Tim Clark riding, but barrier 11 is the catch. At 2.50 this is a fair price for the most reliable horse in the race. Win bet, and a sound multi leg.
The value bet
Eagle Express, Caulfield Race 3, 1:25, 11.00 with Bet Right.
The Alinghi Stakes favourite, Geegees Mistruth, is 2.00 with Bet Right despite top weight, no placing from two Caulfield starts and a fifth at both runs since July. That is a lot of faith at even money.
Eagle Express has a win and a second from two runs since July, more than $111,000 in prize money in that time, and Damian Lane rides from barrier 3 for Waller. At 10.00 the price looks far too big beside the favourite. Photograph, 4.80 with Unibet, is the danger after placing in two of three Caulfield starts and getting the lightest weight. Each-way.
The quaddie angle
Autumn Glow, Randwick Race 9, 5:35.
The King Charles III Stakes is down to five runners and Waller trains three of them. Autumn Glow has won four of five Randwick starts and placed in all five, has won both runs in the last three months for $1.16 million, and carries two kilograms less than the other four. McDonald rides from barrier 4.
God’s Window, from the same stable, is the danger: two wins and four placings from four Randwick starts, a win last start, and Siena Grima aboard. In a five-horse race, this is the leg to stand Autumn Glow alone in the Randwick quaddie.
How these were picked
All three come from our full previews for Caulfield, Randwick, Doomben, Ascot, Morphettville, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Bendigo, Toowoomba and Wagga. Markets were only up for the early races on most cards, so price decided between picks of similar strength.
Tempted in the Everest and Cavalry Girl at Caulfield topped their meetings on form but had no price when this was written. Miss Waititi, 3.00 with Bet Right at Caulfield, was close to the best bet, while Pearl Pendant at Doomben, 7.00 with Bet Right, and Bifurcation at Wagga, 9.50 with Unibet, were the other value options considered. Every quaddie-race candidate across the ten cards was unpriced, so Autumn Glow got the nod on its Randwick record.
