Overview
Jett Newman has ridden seven times at Lismore for M J Dunn’s stable and won on three of them, and on Sunday the pair team up again with Zweigelt in the 2120m Lomax Plate and Private Max in the maiden handicap. Dunn is the trainer to follow on this track generally: 13 of his 21 Lismore runners have finished in the first three, and his team is spread across the card.
That stable thread runs through these Lismore racing tips, but the card has more going for it than one yard. Archie McColm, who places with nearly two-thirds of his Lismore rides, partners the favourite in the opener, and the last two races each feature a last-start winner.
The essentials: seven races on a Good to Soft turf track, first jump at 2:05PM and the last at 5:35PM. Prices were up for the first two races at the time of writing but not beyond that, so the back half of the card is about form and connections rather than the market. Below you’ll find a pick and a staking line for every race, the jockey and trainer numbers that matter here, and a short list of where the money goes.
Lismore: the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two starts here at most, and nobody on the card has been to Lismore three times, so this meeting gets read through the riders and stables rather than horse-for-course profiles. Two to note: Togarashi has placed in both Lismore runs, and Drahomira won on its only visit.
The rider list is where the track numbers carry weight. These are today’s jockeys with at least five Lismore rides, sorted by how often they hit the frame:
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D L Turner | 5 | 0 | 4 | 0.0 | 80.0 |
| Archie McColm | 11 | 3 | 7 | 27.3 | 63.6 |
| Jai Williams | 8 | 2 | 5 | 25.0 | 62.5 |
| A Mallyon | 12 | 1 | 6 | 8.3 | 50.0 |
| D Peisley | 8 | 1 | 4 | 12.5 | 50.0 |
| Jett Newman | 14 | 3 | 4 | 21.4 | 28.6 |
| Noriyuki Masuda | 10 | 1 | 2 | 10.0 | 20.0 |
| Violet Soulsby | 7 | 0 | 1 | 0.0 | 14.3 |
Newman’s place rate looks modest on that table, but all four of his Lismore placings, three of them wins, came for Dunn. That says more about the booking than the rider. Turner is the curiosity: no wins from five rides, yet only once out of the first three.
Trainers with three or more Lismore runners:
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chris & Corey Munce | 3 | 1 | 2 | 33.3 | 66.7 |
| M J Dunn | 21 | 4 | 13 | 19.0 | 61.9 |
| Marcus Wilson | 4 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 50.0 |
| Stephen & Jordan Lee | 16 | 3 | 7 | 18.8 | 43.8 |
| Daniel Bowen | 5 | 2 | 2 | 40.0 | 40.0 |
| MS S Pepper | 5 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 40.0 |
| Ethan Ensby | 11 | 1 | 3 | 9.1 | 27.3 |
Dunn’s 21 runners give the most reliable number on the page. The Lee stable is the other big local presence, with five starters today, while Ethan Ensby sends five as well, all with Violet Soulsby aboard.

Race by race: Lismore predictions
Race 1: Newton Denny Chapelle Country Boosted Hcp (C1), 2:05PM, 1536m
Sunset Trail comes here off a second, and his three runs since July have produced a win and that second. That’s a horse in form, and the booking of Archie McColm adds weight to it: three wins and seven placings from 11 Lismore rides is the best strike profile among the riders on this card. Drawn three with 57.5kg, he should find a spot without having to work.
The market has it as a two-horse race, Sunset Trail at $2.70 with Unibet and Latin Lights at $2.90 with Bet Right. Latin Lights won two starts back for the Dunn stable but finished fourth last time, and gets in 1kg lighter.
The one I’d keep onside for the place is She’s A Dame. Four runs since July, four finishes in the first three, and at $5.50 with Bet Right she is the each-way bet of the race. Back Sunset Trail to win, with She’s A Dame each-way as the second play.
Race 2: Somerville Laundry Lomax Plate (C1), 2:40PM, 2120m
Does Zweigelt‘s last-start seventh matter when the combination behind him has won three of seven at this track? I don’t think it does. Newman and Dunn have a record here that you can act on, and Zweigelt won the start before that flat effort. Four starts since July have produced a win and another placing, and the 2120m trip on a soft surface asks for stamina the field doesn’t all have.
Bills Angel is the favourite at $2.45 with Bet Right after a second last time out, with three placings from five runs in that period. Fair enough, but the price leaves no room.
The danger I’d rather cover is Desert Angel. She won her latest start, Peisley rides, and she’s drawn two. At $5.50 with Unibet she is a better price than her recent form deserves. Crunch Time and Sea Warning are both scratched, which takes some of the depth out of the race.
Zweigelt at $2.70 with Bet Right to win, with a small saver on Desert Angel.
Race 3: Northern Rivers Concreting Country Boosted Mdn Hcp, 3:15PM, 1220m
Maidens rarely give you much to hang a bet on, and this one gives less than most. Checks’n’balances is the most proven of them: six runs since July, three placings, and second at the latest attempt. It hasn’t won, but it keeps turning up, and K H Zechner keeps the ride. Barrier nine is a nuisance over 1220m.
The obvious threat is Private Max, the second Newman and Dunn runner of the day. Two career starts for a third and a seventh is thin, and it hasn’t raced since July, but the stable’s local record makes it hard to leave out. Too Hard To Find ran second at its only Lismore start and drops to 52kg from the inside gate, which is worth noting.
No market yet. Small each-way on Checks’n’balances; this isn’t a race to press.
Race 4: Basec Engineering Mdn Plate, 3:50PM, 1420m
Two Lismore runs, two placings. Togarashi is the only horse on the card that has shown it handles this track twice, and its form line of 5-2-2 says it is getting closer. The sticking point is the gate: barrier 14 is the widest in the race.
Ryan Maloney has the ride for MS S Pepper, whose Lismore runners have placed twice from five starts. Expect him to drop in and come wide; the 1420m start gives a little time to find cover.
Cautionary Tail is the danger after two placings from five runs since July, though carrying 59kg from gate 12 is not easy. Captain Blood for Mallyon has run unplaced at three runs in that window. Togarashi to win, and he is the anchor for the quaddie.
Race 5: Austec Plumbing (Bm58), 4:25PM, 1320m
A weak Benchmark 58 that lost three runners to scratchings, including Nomomeikushi and Hotzino. Secret Rose is the only runner in the field with a win since July, from five starts with two placings in all. Her latest was a sixth, so the case rests on that earlier form rather than anything recent.
D Peisley rides, and he places with half his Lismore mounts. From barrier seven with 57.5kg, she should get a reasonable run in behind the speed.
Vetoed is the one who could trouble her: one placing from three runs, and seventh at its only Lismore start. Lennystar hasn’t raced since July, which makes the 742209 line hard to trust either way. Hard to have a confident view. Small win bet on Secret Rose, otherwise watch this one.
Race 6: Pj’s Fruit & Veg (Bm58), 5:00PM, 1120m
Two horses here, and they come at the race from opposite directions. Brief Authority won its latest start for Dunn, its only run since July, and its form line reads 4-1. Drahomira has the course credentials, a win at its only Lismore start, but has run fifth since. On the scale between unexposed upside and proven track form, I’m siding with the upside.
A Mallyon rides Brief Authority from barrier 13, which is the main concern. Over 1120m on a soft track the wide runners can get caught three deep with no cover. At 57kg it carries a manageable weight.
Thunderous is the danger. Marcus Wilson’s runner has a win and two other placings from five runs since July, second last time, and shoulders 60.5kg. Daniel Bowen, who trains Drahomira, has won with two of his five Lismore runners.
Brief Authority to win, with Thunderous in the exacta.
Race 7: Metroll (Bm58), 5:35PM, 1320m
Chris and Corey Munce have sent three runners to Lismore and two have finished in the first three, one of them a winner. Langan is the next one, and it comes in off a win at its only start since July. Its 6-371 form line includes a spell, and it seems to have come back better for it. Tahlia Fenlon rides at 56.5kg from barrier nine.
Four scratchings have shrunk the field, including Starry Jack, Smashing Nova and Quest Of Quests, so the race is easier to read now than it was this morning.
Risk For Reward is the threat. It ran third on its only Lismore visit, has placed twice from five runs since July for the Lee stable, and Mallyon rides with 55.5kg. Clubhouse gets Turner, who has missed the frame just once from five Lismore rides, so it’s worth a look in the exotics. Back Langan to win, Risk For Reward the saver.

Where the money goes
NAP: Sunset Trail (Race 1, 2:05PM). A win and a second from three runs since July, and McColm on top. If the form holds, the opening race is the one to bet into.
Value: Desert Angel (Race 2, 2:40PM). Won her latest start and still $5.50 with Unibet in a field that lost two runners. That price looks generous for a last-start winner.
Banker: Togarashi (Race 4, 3:50PM). Placed in both of its Lismore runs. The wide draw is the risk, but no other maiden on the card can match its track form.
Each-way: She’s A Dame (Race 1, 2:05PM). Four runs, four placings since July, and $5.50 with Bet Right. Hard to see her missing the first three.
Course angle: Jett Newman riding for M J Dunn. Three wins from seven Lismore rides together, and they team up with Zweigelt in Race 2 and Private Max in Race 3.
Dunn places with more than six in ten of the runners he brings here, and if Newman keeps getting the call, the pairing will be the first name to check at the next Lismore meeting.
