ALL STAR MILE BETTING SNAPSHOT
Mr Brightside is the $1.75 favourite with PlayUp for the All-Star Mile ahead of Pride Of Jenni at $3.70. Those two dominate the market and it is the Godolphin galloper, Cascadian, that is next in line at $11.
There are 12 contenders in action and the likes of Ayrton ($16), Attractable ($23) and Desert Lightning ($23) are given some hope. Buffalo River was 3rd behind Mr Brightside at his most recent run and is at $31 alongside Pinstriped. Munhamek, Dom To Shoot and Holymanz are all $41, while Puntura ($81) is the rank outsider.
ALL STAR MILE FORM ANALYSIS
Four runners had their most recent start in the Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 24 and it was a dominant win by Mr Brightside that day. The Team Hayes galloper was second up and settled in a midfield slot as a $1.50 favourite before rounding up Pericles and Buffalo River.
The Cox Plate (2040m) runner-up from last spring went 12.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark in that race, which is the best last start figure of any runner. Buffalo River led and stuck on for 3rd. He worked hard early on before fading late.
Dom To Shoot is the third runner to come out of the Futurity and stuck on for 4th. He has drawn barrier 12 for this assignment, just outside Mr Brightside (barrier 11). The other to come out of the Futurity Stakes is Munhamek. He faces a task but should be better over the 1600m and did produce the fastest last 200m.
At his previous start, Mr Brightside edged out Pride Of Jenni in a classic version of the CF Orr Stakes (1400m). Pride Of Jenni knocked over Mr Brightside the last time the two clashed over the 1600m with that coming in the Champions Mile at Flemington. Mr Brightside was dropping down in trip following his Cox Plate run a fortnight earlier.
Pride Of Jenni comes in with five weeks in between runs and went 12.6 lengths faster than standard in the Orr. She usually improves her figures with a run or two under the belt and did go a whopping 18.2 lengths faster than standard when knocking over Mr Brightside last spring. That is a better figure than what any horse in this race has produced.
Cascadian was runner-up behind Mr Brightside in the All-Star Mile in 2023 and comes down from Sydney after finishing 4th behind Think It Over in the Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m). The nine-year-old lines up for his third run this time in and went nine lengths faster than standard benchmark last time.
There looks to be plenty of speed in this race with Buffalo River, Pride Of Jenni and Attractable in action. That might suit the veteran. Attractable led before fading when 8th behind Fangirl in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) but will strip fitter at his second run this time in.
Desert Lightning is one of two New Zealand gallopers in the race and was too strong for the likes of Legarto over the 1600m two starts ago before running 3rd behind La Crique at Group 1 level on February 24. He is yet to race in Australia. Puntura is the other Kiwi and dropped out of it in the same race behind La Crique last time after being posted wide.
The likes of Holymanz and Ayrton were in action in the Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 2, filling the minor placings behind Atishu, who had the answers. She is classy but I am not sure about this form and Ayrton looked a level below the likes of Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni in the Orr Stakes.
ALL STAR MILE TIPS AND BEST BETS
This does look to be a bit of a match-race between Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni and, outside of those two, a weak version of the All Star Mile. The ledger is square at one win apiece when the two have raced against one another. Pride Of Jenni has won just one of six when second up but has clearly been a late maturer. She has improved an average of three lengths on benchmark figures between her first and second runs at her past five preparations and her second up win came off a similar break back in 2022. Mr Brightside has won when third up at his last two preparations and has the superior overall record. He looks the safe play for mine and is one to anchor in multi’s for the day. Barrier 11 isn’t a huge concern and I expect Craig Williams will be able to find some cover in the early stages with the field to string out. He can round them up in the straight.
