Is There A Barrier Draw Bias in the Australian Derby?
There definitely appears to be a barrier draw bias for the Australian Derby with inside barriers being highly beneficial to winning the race. Ideally, drawing barrier eight or less is the best starting gate for the race.
Explosive Jack managed to buck the trend in 2021 by winning from barrier 15 so it is not impossible to win from the wider draws.
Where a horse sits in running is even more important than the starting gate as being caught wide in the staying event is detrimental to being a winning chance.
