DOOMBEN 10000 BETTING SNAPSHOT

Giga Kick is the dominant favourite with betright at the $1.75 quote ahead of the fellow three-year-old, Aft Cabin, at $5.50, while last year’s Doomben 10000 winner, Mazu, is the other horse in single figures at $9. 

Vilana is an $11 chance, while The Quokka (1200m) winner, Overpass is at $15. Eduardo comes up to Queensland for a crack and is a $15 shot, while the local, Prince Of Boom, heads the rest at $19. 

DOOMBEN 10000 FORM ANALYSIS

The Doomben 10000 brings together a number of different formlines with six of the 11 contenders coming up after taking part in the tail-end of the Sydney carnival, while four have had their most recent start in Queensland. Overpass heads east after taking out the inaugural The Quokka (1200m) at Ascot. 

Giga Kick was in action in the All Aged Stakes (1400m) and comes in with a month between runs. The Everest (1200m) winner from 2022 settled back from the wide barrier in the Randwick Group 1 and pounced on them in the straight to go 13.1 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which is the best last start figure of any runner. His peak came at this stage when taking out the Everest and he draws barrier 4 for the 10000. 

Mazu was also in action in the All Aged Stakes but might not quite have seen out the 1400m. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained galloper was 3rd in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) prior to his run in the All Aged, going 12.5 lengths faster than standard benchmark. Giga Kick was runner-up in the TJ Smith. 

Mariamia has not had a race since the TJ Smith Stakes and was a respectable 5th in the Group 1 on Day One of The Championships. She claimed the Galaxy (1100m) with just the 51kg on her back prior to that. The Joseph- Pride-trained galloper just needs to do it under the WFA conditions of the race. 

Pride has two contenders in the race and the other is the old-timer, Eduardo. The nine-year-old led in the Galaxy with the 59kg before finishing 11th, beaten four lengths. He should be better at WFA and on the fresh side. He has gone 12 lengths faster than standard or more at his past four runs when first up. He took out this race in 2021. 

Aft Cabin is one of four last start winners in the race and went nine lengths faster than standard to claim the Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) at Randwick back on April 8. The son of Lonhro has won four of six and is a solid chance, especially if the track stays as a Soft or progresses to a Heavy. 

His stablemate, Vilana, is the other to have had its last start in Sydney. The Godolphin galloper took out the Hall Mark Stakes on April 15 and overcame a wide run to score that day ahead of Waihaha Falls, going 7.6 lengths faster than standard, rocketing home off a slow tempo. 

Overpass has form around a number of those horses from the spring and was 6th in the Everest last year before tapering off over longer trips. He was able to lead in the Quokka and hold off the flying Amelia’s Jewel late in the piece in a thrilling photo. The son of Vancouver went 8.3 lengths faster than standard benchmark and might have improvement to come second up. 

Of the other runners, Prince Of Boom and A Case Of You come out of the Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm. That duo finished 3rd and 6th respectively with Rothfire taking out the Group 2. Both will need to be at their best to trouble the favoured runners, while Weona Smartone and Centrefire look outclassed. 

DOOMBEN 10000 TIPS AND BEST BETS

Hard to see Giga Kick going down here. The betting suggests that he has the class edge and it certainly looks that way on paper. Fourth up was when he delivered his Everest win last spring and the slight drop back in trip should hold no concerns. Rough backers can consider a number of horses, including Eduardo. He races well on the fresh side and narrowly went down when resuming in the Challenge Stakes (1000m), finishing ahead of Giga Kick. 1200m might test these days but he can stick in this for a long way.
