Newmarket Handicap Betting Snapshot
A field of 17 are in action in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and it should be a sight to behold as the field make their way down the famous Flemington straight.
The last start Lightning Stakes (1000m) winner, Home Affairs, has been installed as a $3.70 favourite with NEDS, just ahead of the John O’Shea-trained Lost And Running at $3.80.
They are the only two horses under $10. Artorius is rated an $11 shot and Masked Crusader is $13, while the consistent Swats That is at $15. Snapdancer ($16), Levante ($19) and Quantico ($19) head the rest. Last year’s winner Zoutori is $34, while we see as much as $51 for the straight track specialist, Astrologist.
Newmarket Handicap Form Analysis
Formlines are many and varied here with four runners coming out of the Lightning Stakes. Home Affairs led and defied Nature Strip that day to go a healthy 13.9 lengths faster than standard benchmark, just shading the 13 lengths faster that he set when winning the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at the track last spring.
Swats That (4th), Masked Crusader (5th) and The Astrologist (7th) all have some ground to make up. Masked Crusader is 2kg better at the weights and is five from seven over the 1200m. Swats That was 5th in this race last year, while The Astrologist is 6.5kg better at the weights and is a roughie to consider on the back of his record at the track and trip.
Lost And Running was a first up winner at Randwick ahead of Overpass, who has since come out and won well at Flemington. The five-year-old went 7.7 lengths faster than standard with his recent win.
Three runners come out of the Oakleigh Plate, including Oxley Road. That race rated well and Oxley Road went 14.8 lengths faster than standard. The runner-up, Malkovich, is another Flemington winner from last weekend. Poland and Zoutori are the others to come out of the Caulfield Group 1.
Snapdancer is in the market and carries just the 52.5kg with Harry Coffey to ride. She defeated Promise Of Success by nearly three lengths in the Triscay Stakes (1200m) last time, going 7.5 lengths faster than standard.
Others to consider are the three-year-olds, Artorius, and Finance Tycoon. They carry much less weight than the other youngster in Home Affairs. Artorius was 3rd to that horse in last years Coolmore Stud Stakes, coming from well back and has since resumed with a 6th to Marine One in a slowly run affair at Caulfield in the Rubiton Stakes. Finance Tycoon took out the Zeditave Stakes (1200m) at his latest.
Quantico and September Run are the fresh runners and will be out to join Redkirk Warrior as a winner of this race that was first up. Quantico went 15.5 lengths faster than standard when winning at the track and trip last spring and comes in with a trial win ahead of Lost And Running. September Run is another recent trial winner and might enjoy a nice tempo here with just the 52.5kg on her back with Jamie Kah to ride.
Newmarket Handicap Tips and Best Bets
They should go fairly hard here with Snapdancer and Home Affairs to go forward, while Oxley Road, Lost And Running, Finance Tycoon and The Astrologist shouldn’t be too far away. Artorius, September Run and Masked Crusader shape as the swoopers. Willing to risk Home Affairs in his quest to make it back to back wins. Artorius shapes as one at the double figure odds, while roughie players should also consider The Astrologist. He strung together two wins a this stage, albeit in weaker class last campaign but he does boast some excellent figures down the straight, going12.5 lengths faster when winning the Aurie’s Star Stakes, while he went more than 16 lengths faster when runner-up behind Exhilarates at the track and trip in November 2020. He wasn’t quite ready when first up in the Standish and was unsuited in the Lightning. Worth thought at a massive price.
