Top 5 Newmarket Handicap winners.
1. BLACK CAVIAR (2011)
Black Caviar’s Newmarket Handicap win was the 10th of the 25 straight in her career and she did it with 58kg on her back, conceding 8kg to the 2010 Golden Slipper (1200m) winner, Crystal Lily. The unbeaten champ did it in cruise control as a $1.18 favourite and won by three lengths. The Peter Moody galloper attracted big crowds to see her, particularly late in her career and won every major sprint in Australia, while she defeated the worlds best at Royal Ascot in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200) in 2012.
2. TAKEOVER TARGET (2006)
Takeover Target raced 41 times for 21 wins and won Group 1 races every season from when he first appeared on track at age four until he was nine, claiming over $6 million in prizemoney. His Newmarket Handicap win came in 2006, the same year he headed to Royal Ascot to claim the Kings Stand Stakes (1000m). Other major wins came in the Lightning Stakes (1000m), TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and the Goodwood (1200m), while the well-travelled galloper also ventured to Singapore to take out the Group 1 KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) in 2008.
3. WEEKEND HUSSLER (2008)
The dominant performer across 2007 and 2008, Weekend Hussler graduated from a Cranbourne Maiden win to take out six Group 1 wins to be crowned Horse of the Year. In the Newmarket, he was sent out a $1.70 favourite and didn’t let punters down, holding out the handy Magnus. He went on to take out the Randwick Guineas (1600m) and the George Ryder Stakes (1500m) that autumn and returned at four, picking up the Memsie Stakes (1400m), Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and the Underwood Stakes (1800m) before injury cut him down.
4. MISS ANDRETTI (2007)
Miss Andretti is another one of the better sprinters that Australia has produced and also ventured to Royal Ascot, taking out the Kings Stand Stakes (1000m). The mare was originally trained in Perth under the tutelage of David Mueller before transferring to Lee Freedman’s stables in Victoria and her Newmarket Handicap (1200m) win came in 2007 ahead of Gold Edition in what was one of the better edition’s of the race. The race was held at Caulfield racecourse that year as the Flemington track was being refurbished. She won 19 of 31 starts with five of those coming at Group 1 level.
5. BIVOUAC (2020)
You could make a case for a number of Newmarket winners since 2000 to fill the last slot of this top 5, including Alinghi, Scenic Blast, Hay List and the two-time winner, Redkirk Warrior. At the time of writing, Bivouac has won three Group 1 races and may go on to surpass that lot. He made the likes of Loving Gaby and Gytrash look second rate in the 2020 edition of the Newmarket Handicap (1200m), while his other wins at the highest level have come in the Golden Rose (1400m) and the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m).
