I’m also happy that he’s not forced into a tactic. With a middle draw he can land one off the speed if they burn early, or take a position closer if they crawl. That flexibility is gold when you don’t know how the track is playing yet.
The danger is Mandible Magic (barrier 1, 52.5kg). She’s the lightweight with the softest map, and she won on her only start at Ascot, so you can see the case if she gets the dream run from the inside and the gaps appear.

Race 2: Swan Draught Mdn — 12:35, 1969m
The question is simple: who actually wants 2000m today? I keep coming back to Midnight Star (barrier 6, 56kg). The form figures (3-54322) tell you he’s in the zone, and over the last 90 days he’s been around the money often enough to trust him in a staying maiden: four runs for two placings and an average finishing spot around the mid-threes. That’s a horse who keeps turning up and doing his job.
He also lands with a rider who can make a staying race look easy, and from barrier 6 he shouldn’t be spotting them a start. In these maidens, the safest play is usually the horse with repeatable effort levels, not the one with the prettiest trial whisper.
Mr Kissinger (barrier 9) is the main threat on profile alone, but I’m not forgiving what he’s been serving up late. His last 90 days reads five runs for two placings, and the average finish is still a long way from winning. If he gets the right tempo and can sustain a run, he’s a chance, but he’s not the one I want to take a short quote about.

This is the market problem race even without odds, because the form you can see on paper will pull attention to the wrong horses. I’m with Miss Valmalenco (barrier 2, 56kg). Her recent sequence (1-5212) says she’s racing with purpose, and she draws to get the exact run you want at 1300m: settle, hold a spot, and be the first one into clear air when the pressure goes on.
Plenty of her rivals look like they need a race to go perfectly. Masterly is drawn 1 but arrives off a plain run (1340-9) and doesn’t have the Ascot profile. Caporetto has been struggling to threaten at all (0-99765). Tribal Ruler and Lipstick Jungle look like horses you include only if you’re building wide multis and hoping for a turnaround.
The danger is Mr Kissinger again (barrier 7, 57.5kg), purely because his Ascot record is better than his current win conversion: three runs here for two placings. If he’s going to run to his best, this kind of grade is where it happens.

Race 4: Old Comrade Stakes — 13:41, 1750m
The contrast in this field is brutal. Bonjoy (barrier 2, 59kg) brings actual winning momentum, while most of these are either searching or resuming. He’s 2 from 2 in his last 90 days, and he won on his only start at Ascot, so you’re not guessing whether he handles the place. From gate 2, C Johnston-Porter can choose: take up a spot right behind the speed, or control it if nobody else is keen. Either way, Bonjoy gets first say when the sprint goes on.
There’s also a little extra confidence in the way he lands in this exact race at this exact trip. This isn’t a “see how we go” placement. It reads like a horse in form who’s being kept on the boil.
The horse that can upset the script is Elite Missile (barrier 1, 54kg). He’s had two goes at Ascot for a win and another result, and that inside draw gives him the cheap run Bonjoy will have to work around. This is the kind of maiden where you can argue yourself into circles, so I’m anchoring on intent and map. Bonditram (barrier 3, 56kg) gets Chris Parnham, and that booking alone tells you they’re not here for a picnic. He also placed on his only start at Ascot, which matters in a race where a few will find out late that Ascot 1300m asks for more balance than they’ve got.
The other plus is simple: from barrier 3 he should land in the first half without spending petrol. That’s often the winning pattern in these mid-card Ascot maidens when the pressure comes on from the 600m and the wide runners are forced to go early.
