Winterbottom Stakes (Race 9)
Overpass goes into the 2025 Winterbottom Stakes bidding for a third straight success in the Group One contest, and he can complete history at a racecourse where he often produces his best.
The seven-year-old has also won two renewals of The Quokka (1200 metres) at Ascot, with victories in the race in 2023 and 2024. He is very difficult to oppose when he features in Western Australia, particularly in Perth.
Connections of Overpass were delighted with his last performance in the Everest at Moonee Valley, where he came home less than two lengths behind the outstanding Ka Ying Rising. Bjorn Baker’s racing manager, Luke Hilton, described that run as the best of his career. He has had a trial since then, and Hilton was delighted with what he produced in his racecourse workout.
Several horses have managed to complete a double in the Winterbottom Stakes, but none have been able to record a hat-trick. Overpass is on the brink of history, and if Hilton’s comments following his recent trial are anything to go by, he is going to take some beating in Perth.
SECOND BEST BET: HOT AND HIGH
Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic (Race 5)
Hot and High puts her unbeaten record on the line in the Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic. The three-year-old filly has looked impressive in her two appearances so far, prevailing at Northam and Belmont, respectively.
Lucy Fiore rode the Too Darn Hot filly on her latest run over 1200 metres, and once she asked her horse to quicken in the home straight, the pair stretched away from their rivals. She is now stepping up 200 metres, but based on what we have seen from her, the extra distance should not be a problem.
The sky is the limit for Dion Luciani’s runner. This will be her first run in black-type company, but it looks set to be another stepping stone towards the highest level in her division.
BEST VALUE: LUVNWAR
Jungle Dawn Classic (Race 8)
Luvnwar ended last season with back-to-back victories on the track. Unfortunately for her connections, she has yet to shine in the latest campaign in her two appearances. Michael Grantham’s mare could be set to bounce back in the Jungle Dawn Classic, in what appears to be a good opportunity for her.
The five-year-old has not been handed any favours with the draw, as she will come out of barrier 16. However, Clint Johnston-Porter should be able to get her into a nice position in the early stages of the race, and if she gets a clear run in the home straight, she has the speed to prevail in this 1400-metre contest.
