Race 1: Bet365 Bet Boost Mdn Plate — 13:00, 1750
Steal Away gets my vote early because she’s the one coming in with momentum rather than hope. That 057392 profile screams “found her level” and she draws gate 2 to park close enough without doing any early work. Patrick Moloney is a plus in this grade, and from an inside alley he can keep it simple: hold a spot, peel at the right time, and make the others prove they want 1750m.
The danger is King Tagaloa. He’s the obvious improver off that last-start second (3468-2), and barrier 8 gives J Noonan options to slide across and land somewhere midfield with cover. If Steal Away gets cluttered from the draw and King Tagaloa gets clean air from the 600m, the race can flip quickly.
One more note: Pride Of Mandy (gate 1) can make you look silly if she controls the inside and turns it into a sit sprint, but her recent figures read more honest than sharp.

Race 2: Hygain Tracktorque Mdn Plate — 13:30, 1312
Here’s the puzzle: which of the lightly raced three-year-olds is ready to jump the queue, and which of the older maidens is just going to do what they always do. I’m siding with the three-year-old Jourama (form 24) because the profile fits a horse that’s already competitive and now gets the extra maturity edge against exposed types. Draw 3 helps Damien Thornton put her in the first half without burning petrol.
The race shape suggests she gets her chance. There’s no obvious tearaway listed to run them off their legs, which usually rewards the runner that can hold a spot and quicken. Jourama looks the most likely to do that.
The danger is Lochend Princess (66327). She’s been around the mark often enough that you can see the win coming, and J Maskiell taking the ride at Bairnsdale is never something I ignore. The barrier 12 is the headache, though. She’ll need luck, and she’ll need the gaps at the right time.

Race 3: Celebrating 50 Years @ Racecourse Road – January 9 Mdn Plate — 14:00, 1094
The market usually falls in love with debutant stables in these short-course maidens, but I’m looking for the runner who’s already shown they can put themselves into the fight. Azzurri Queen ran third on debut and that’s often the best guide you get in a 1094m dash. She doesn’t need to be a star, she just needs to be cleaner early and hold her line when they fan.
Barrier 11 means Patrick Moloney has to make a decision: press forward and risk being trapped wide, or snag and take the luck route. I’d rather he hunts up to midfield with cover if possible and gives her a chance to build into it. She’s got the right sort of “can run a race” debut, which is more than you can say for most of these.
The danger is Captive Rock (72). He’s already run second in two starts and that consistency can be hard to beat in a maiden. The wide gate 15 is the obvious risk, but if the speed is strong and they come back to him late, he’s the one that can be launching while others are panicking.

Race 4: Tambo Waste Mdn Plate — 14:30, 2406
This is the race where the staying question matters more than the last-start margin. I’m with Chateau Dancer (832726) because she looks the most reliable stayer in the line-up and she gets the right little weight set-up at 120.1. Gate 3 is gold in a 2406m maiden: Liana Wood can hold a spot, breathe, and not get dragged into anything silly early.
There’s a second reason I like her: her form reads like she’ll keep finding. She’s not one of those “one run and done” types. In these country staying maidens, that trait wins you races when others hit the wall from the 300m.
The danger is Lucky Chance (048673). The form isn’t pretty to read, but it’s trending the right way and gate 4 keeps him close enough to make the race. If he rolls forward and turns it into a genuine staying test, he’s the one most likely to make my selection work for it.

Race 5: Gippsland Grain Store (Bm56) — 15:00, 2406
The best betting race on the card, and the one where I’m happy to have a firm stance. Winter Grace is my banker. She’s won on her only start at Bairnsdale and, more importantly, her recent results stack up in a way that suggests she’s still improving rather than just cycling through country grades. Over the last 90 days she’s had 5 runs for 1 win and 2 placings. That’s a horse holding form, not stealing one.
She draws 6 which is fine at this trip, and Bailey Kinninmont has already made the most of his limited Bairnsdale book, with two rides here for a win and a place. Small sample, but it tells you he rides the track well when he turns up.
The danger is Chateau Vega (1-55442). She’s been consistently around the money and her recent 90-day profile reads like a horse ready to win a race if it falls her way: 5 runs, 3 placings, average finishing position 3.6. From gate 2, Nadia Daniels can give her the economical run and she’ll be the one taking ground off you late if Winter Grace has any softness.
Behind those, Mana Combat (4895-2) is the value place angle from gate 4 if you’re shopping for something to run top three, and King Of Savoy is the blowout runner if he repeats his best without doing it the hard way from gate 12.
