Quirindi Racing Tips 4 August — can Calzino back it up?
Quirindi Racing Tips 4 August — can Calzino back it up?
The best angle on this Quirindi meeting is simple: a couple of these have already been here and actually done the job. That matters at a country track where comfort and pattern can trump raw promise. Calzino has won on its only start at Quirindi and now lands in the staying Benchmark where plenty of these look like they are still arguing with the trip. Add in a card that’s light on proven winners and you’ve got a meeting where you can be decisive, rather than “include everything and hope”.
We’ve got four races on turf, kicking off at 12:55. Below are my Quirindi racing tips with a clear lean in each race, plus where I’d actually bet and where I’d happily watch with my hands in my pockets.
Quirindi — the setup
Course history is thin through most of today’s fields: heaps of runners have only one visit here, so treat any “record” as a reference point, not a lifestyle. Where it does help is on the jockey and trainer side, because a few of them have genuine volume at Quirindi.
Going is listed as blank in the racecard data, so I’m reading this as “standard country turf until told otherwise” and leaning harder on barrier, weight and who can sit in the first half without burning.

Race-by-race
Race 1: Tab.Com.Au Country Boosted Mdn Plate — 12:55, 1586
Tarrant County appeals as the one who can land in the right spot and actually keep rolling at the mile. That recent form line 0-6352 is the shape I want in a country maiden: he’s not brilliant, but he’s working his way into the finish rather than flatlining. Barrier 9 isn’t pretty, but in smallish country fields it can be less “trapped wide” and more “stay out of trouble and slide across when they sort themselves out”.
He’s also placed on his only Quirindi start. One run isn’t a trend, but it does tell you he handles the place and the routine.
The danger is Irish Accolade. He’s an older maiden, yes, but the recent figures read like a horse who keeps finding one or two better and he’s drawn gate 5 to stalk rather than chase. He’s also placed on his only visit here, so there’s no track knock.
Staking: Small win bet Tarrant County. If you’re playing exotics, keep Irish Accolade as the saver runner.
Race 2: Willow Tree Cup Day 22nd August Mdn Plate — 13:35, 1203
Here’s the puzzle: do you take the horse who has already screamed “I’m ready” in two starts, or do you side with the older heads who have had their chances? I’ll take the upside. Highland Dancer is 2 from 2 for placings (form 22), draws to get the soft run from gate 1, and carries 57kg which is completely manageable if she finds the same late strength again. In these 1200m maidens, being able to hold your spot from a low gate is half the war.
The Crusher is the clear danger. He’s already run third (form 3) and he gets Shannen Llewellyn, who rides Quirindi well enough to respect (8 rides here for 1 win and 4 placings). Gate 5 gives him options if they dawdle or overdo it.
I’m happy to oppose a few of the deeper form horses like Haney (463-2) only because they’ve shown the “nearly” habit, and habit is a real thing in maidens.
Staking: Win bet Highland Dancer. Save exacta with The Crusher running second if you want a cover.
Race 3: Elders Killara Feedlot (Bm58) — 14:10, 2187
This is the best betting race on the card because the map and the profiles line up. Calzino has already won on his only Quirindi start and he comes into this off a form spike: 48-041 reads like a horse who has found the right rhythm. He’s also one of the few in this who looks like he can absorb a genuine staying test rather than just “get the trip if they walk”. The sting is barrier 14, but over 2187m you at least get time to work across and find cover.
The 90-day snapshot says Calzino has had 3 runs for 1 win, so you’re not buying a once-a-year miracle. You’re buying a horse currently converting opportunities.
The danger is Inarticulate, and it’s a proper danger because he’s in sharp nick (form 70141) and he’s the class weight with 62kg. Over these trips, weight bites, but so does momentum, and this bloke has it. If he lobs one-one from gate 4, he can bully them late.
One more to respect at odds is Exorbitant Miss. She’s won on her only Quirindi run and her form 412351 is rock-solid for this grade. I just prefer Calzino’s upside at the track and the way his recent win suggests he’s still going up.
Staking: Win bet Calzino, saver win Inarticulate if the market overreacts to the wide draw on Calzino.

Race 4: Become A Qjc Member Today Plate (C1) — 14:45, 1750
The market usually wants to keep betting “last start winners” in these Class 1s, but I’m looking for the horse who is set up to control the race from a sensible gate. Immortal Rose ticks the lot: she comes off a win (form 76-861), draws gate 5 to sit midfield with cover, and she’s already won on her only Quirindi start. Again, one run is just a note in the margin, but it’s a nice note when you’re trying to split similar midweek types.
The booking helps too. A Gibbons knows the track, and D J Hatch, while not a dominant Quirindi stable, does place runners here regularly enough to trust they’ve thought about the assignment (11 runners here historically and more than half have placed).
The danger is Sanbina (form 63412). She’s the progressive type in the race and if she crosses from gate 12 without doing silly work, she can be the one launching down the outside when they’re looking for room. I just don’t want to take a short quote about a wide draw at 1750m on a track where being too far back can leave you with a “nice run, no split” story.
Staking: Win bet Immortal Rose. If you’re playing each-way, keep it simple and go win only; Class 1s can turn into traffic nightmares.
The plays
NAP: Calzino (Race 3, 14:10). He’s already handled Quirindi by winning on his only visit and his recent form says he’s in the zone, not just visiting the winner’s stall once a year.
Value: Tarrant County (Race 1, 12:55). He’s trending the right way into the race and should get a cleaner run than a few of the usual bridesmaids.
Banker for multis: Immortal Rose (Race 4, 14:45). The last-start win and the gate give her the kind of map that keeps you out of trouble.
Each-way angle: If you must play one each-way, Highland Dancer (Race 2) has the perfect draw to stick on and take luck out of it. I’m still backing her to win, but that gate 1 profile is what you want for place insurance.
Course angle to remember: When Clayton Gallagher turns up at Quirindi, he makes it count. Nine rides here for three wins and he hits the frame two-thirds of the time. Next meeting, if he’s on something with even a half-decent map, you don’t overthink it.
