Country Mondays can be messy at the best of times, but today’s Gundagai card has a rare little anchor point: Sunroe has been here once and won. That’s not a trend, but it is a clue, and on a program where plenty of these are still learning their job, I’ll take any clue I can get.
We’re on turf, four races only, and three of them are maidens where barriers, intent, and who controls the speed matter more than any shiny rating you wish you had. I’ve mapped it with a punter’s eye: find the runners with upside, respect the riders with real Gundagai touch, and be ruthless about what’s a bet and what’s a watch. These Gundagai racing tips are written for exactly that. Quick reads, hard opinions, and a plan for your money.

Gundagai — the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields, and most of it is one-start stuff, so don’t turn it into something it isn’t. The jockey data is a bit more usable: B P Ward has ridden two winners from two rides here, but that’s still only two. The more meaningful “repeatable” name is B Vale with six rides at the track, a win, and three placings, so he’s around the money often enough that it’s not just noise. B McDougall also has six rides here and hits the frame four times, which is the sort of steady local competence you want in country maidens.

Race-by-race: Gundagai predictions
Race 1: Jockeys Celebration Day Mdn Hcp — 13:10, 1290
Imperial Valley is the one I want to be with straight away. The formline is short but loud: he’s got a “2” next to his name and that’s often enough in these early-program maidens when half the field is either out of form or still figuring it out. He’s a 3yo with only 124.5 and while he’s drawn 7, this doesn’t look like a race where you need to be hugging paint from barrier one to win it.
The race reads like it should be run at a genuine clip. Boots Malone (gate 1, 130) and Waves Of Wisdom (gate 2, 130) look like the natural “take a spot and make it a staying test” types, and that suits a horse that can travel and finish rather than one that needs everything fall into its lap.
The danger is Waves Of Wisdom. Brodie Loy in a country maiden is an automatic raise of the eyebrows, and from gate 2 he’ll either control it or sit in the first pair without spending petrol. If Imperial Valley gets caught deep early, Waves Of Wisdom can make him pay.

Race 2: Criterion Hotel (Bm58) — 13:50, 1969
This is the race with the clearest “known quantity”, and I’m happy to make it the day’s anchor: Sunroe. He’s had one run at Gundagai and won, and while one start doesn’t make a specialist, it does tell you the track holds no fears. More importantly, he comes in with a profile that says he’s in the game most runs: over the last 90 days he’s gone around seven times for one win and three placings, and his average finishing position sits under fourth. That’s the sort of reliability you can actually bet into in a Benchmark.
The map also looks kind. He’s drawn 5, carries 125.6, and if this turns into a stamina grind from the 600, he’s the one I trust to keep responding.
I can’t ignore Just Like Liam as the main threat. The form (253115) says he’s been in the fight, and if he lands into a rhythm without giving away too much start from gate 7, he’s the horse most likely to eyeball Sunroe late.

Race 3: Xxxx Gold Country Boosted Mdn Plate — 14:25, 1531
Here’s the puzzle: do you side with the runner who keeps finding a way to place, or do you gamble on the one with upside from a nice draw? I’m siding with the placings because this is a maiden plate and most of these have already told you what they are.
Siyaasi gets the nod. The form reads 5322, which is exactly the pattern of a horse knocking on the door, and Brodie Loy sticks. The only knock is the gate (8) in a bigger field, but at 1531 metres you can afford to be patient early and still land into a spot, especially if the inside division doesn’t overcook it.
The one that can beat him is Western Lights. He’s had one run at Gundagai and ran second, which is at least proof he handles the place. He also comes off a solid recent pattern (602952) which screams “in form without winning.” If Vale can get him rolling at the right time, he’s the one most likely to make Siyaasi earn it.
Staking: Each-way Siyaasi. If the market is thin, go win-only and keep Western Lights as the saver exacta.
Race 4: Nsw Jockey Association Mdn Hcp — 15:05, 1290
This is the scrappiest race on the card and the one I’m least interested in forcing a big bet into, but I do have a clear top pick: Sharp Remark. Two runs for a 7 and a 3 in this grade is a decent platform, and Craig Weeding has him placed like a horse that’s meant to win a maiden before the prep ends. He draws 9, which isn’t ideal, but the wider gates across this field (14, 15, 16 floating around) suggest plenty of these will be snagging back anyway. If Sharp Remark has any tactical speed, he can sit closer than most and that’s often the difference at 1290.
The danger is Better Bloom because of the rider. Loy is back on again, and even though the form (4367) isn’t screaming at you, he’s exactly the jockey who can turn a plain maiden run into a winning one with timing and intent. If Better Bloom lands in the first three pairs, he becomes a live chance even without the sexy profile.
A watch on Jazzaround as the new face: 3yo, gate 1, and only needs to be fair to be competitive. But I won’t bet on what I haven’t seen.
Staking: Small win bet Sharp Remark, or watch race if the market comes up short. Better Bloom the saver if you’re playing.
Where the money goes
I’m keeping it simple and leaning into the only race that feels like it has a proper backbone. Sunroe is the day’s NAP. He’s proven he can win at Gundagai on his only visit, and his recent form says he turns up and runs well more often than not. If you only have one bet, make it him.
The value angle, if the market lets you, is Siyaasi each-way in the third. Horses that keep placing in maidens often start to get treated like they can’t win, then they lob when the right run presents. Loy sticking is a positive, not a coincidence.
The banker for multis is still Sunroe, and if you want a second leg, keep it small and use Imperial Valley in Race 1 as the upside runner with the light weight and the best recent single figure in that field.
Course angle to carry forward: B Vale and B McDougall ride Gundagai like locals, and in these maidens that can matter more than the horse’s last-start margin. Next meeting, I’ll be quick to forgive a runner if one of those two gave it a soft, educational ride today.
