The danger is Le Beau Gosse. One start for a second (form: 2) reads like a horse with ability, and barrier 9 gives W Gordon the option to stay out of trouble and build into it. Gordon’s Ballarat record has enough volume to respect: 8 rides here for 2 wins and 3 placings.
Of the Maher pair, I prefer Oyster Lane as the improver. He draws gate 1 and Ben Allen can just hold a spot, but the form line (7-7344) says he’s more likely to run into a place than blow them away. King Kalakaua from 15 probably needs to be better than this grade to win from there without track pattern help.
Staking: Dama Royale win bet. Small saver quinella with Le Beau Gosse if you want cover in a high-traffic maiden.
Race 2: Hertz (Bm66) — 13:35, 1094m
Here’s the puzzle: do you back the progressive three year old with upside, or the hardened sprinter who keeps turning up and running well? I’m siding with upside. Blaze Away (3811-) looks like a horse who’s found the right pattern, and Jye McNeil is the sort of rider you want in a 1094m race because he makes clean decisions early. McNeil has 3 rides at Ballarat for a win, so he’s not a track “specialist” on volume, but he has shown he can get it right here.
There’s also a quiet course hint: Blaze Away’s stablemate on the day, Wingsandpropellers, won on its only Ballarat start. One run is a data point, not a trend, but it tells you the yard can place one to handle the circuit.
Commands Success is the danger and he’s the one you absolutely don’t want to dismiss. His recent form is rock solid (232314) and he draws 10 which means he’ll need luck and timing, but if they overdo it up front he’s the horse most likely to keep coming.
I’m also giving a look to Aqueduct purely on the “winning habit” angle. He won on his only start at Ballarat, and over the last 90 days he’s gone three times for one win. The gate 1 draw is the selling point: if Olivia East can hold a spot and not get buried, he can pinch this.
Staking: Blaze Away win bet. If Aqueduct drifts to backable odds, add a small saver win because barrier 1 can make this race look very simple.
Race 3: Pipe Pro Directional Drilling Good Friday Country Trainers Series Final (Bm70) — 14:10, 1312m
This is the best betting race on the card because it’s full of horses that actually know how to win. I’m with Superset. He draws barrier 1, his form says he’s right in the zone (1-56311), and Zac Spain just needs to ride him like the best horse from the best gate: hold the paint, let the others take the long way around, and kick off the bend.
Superset doesn’t come with a huge Ballarat sample, but the setup screams “control”. Over 1312m that inside alley is a weapon, especially against a few key dangers drawn to make decisions early.

The danger is Ballynacally, who’s building a proper winning profile (1121-1). Barrier 11 is the issue. If he’s three deep with cover and they’re sliding from the 800m, he can still win, but you’re asking him to do more work than Superset has to do.
My “value if the price allows” runner is Fondled from barrier 7. She’s consistent (28-212) and she’s already placed on her only Ballarat run. Again, one start here is just a reference point, but she’s the sort who can stalk and pounce if the leaders get into a midrace wrestle.
Quick word on Markdel: he’s flying (2118-1) and Neindorf knows Ballarat better than anyone riding today, with 4 wins and 9 placings from 13 rides. But barrier 8 means he’ll have to earn it, and at likely shorter odds I’d rather take the easier map with Superset.
