Cairns Tips 11/07/2023

Our form expert provides Cairns tips for today’s horse racing at the Cannon Park Racecourse and gives his best bets.

BEST BET 🏆

Race 5:  No.2  SPIRIT MEISTER  ($2.30 with Ladbrokes)

The Rod Miller-trained SPIRIT MEISTER is a true track specialist here and four starts into this preparation, he should prove hard to beat in this contest. Last start, the Spirit Of Boom gelding was fourth-up and fitter when he took out a BM60 Hcp, here over 1250m. He drops in grade today and accordingly has more weight to carry but he welcomes back Ryan Wiggins in the saddle who has had success with him in the past. Ideally drawn in gate three today, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen (with cover) and should get the last crack at the front runners. Seven previous starts at the Cannon Park track over today’s trip have resulted in two wins and four minor placings and with stats like that, he deserves to be picked on top here.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 8:  No.1  AVATEA  ($3.80 with bet365)

Another from the Mark Dale stable is AVATEA who is back in top-shelf form and looks the goods to bring up the hat-trick today. Last start, the Divine Prophet gelding made it two-straight when he destroyed his rivals in a Class 6 Hcp over the 950m sprint. With Morgan Butler on board again, the four-year-old took a rails run on the turn and then sprinted away to win by four lengths on the line. He is a five-time winner here on his home track and after three runs back, should be near his peak. Well drawn in gate five, Butler sticks with him today where he will take beating again.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 7:  No.5  MODERNISM  ($5.25 with Bet Right)

Locally-trained by Mark Dale, MODERNISM is third-up today and ticks enough boxes here to put her in with the best of the winning chances. Last start, the Master of Design mare was second-up when she finished just behind the placegetters in Open company, here over 1250m with Morgan Butler aboard. She settled mid-field that day but gave them just a little too much start and despite running home well, she couldn’t bridge the gap, finishing less than two lengths from victory. She steps up to a more suitable distance here where she is already a track and distance winner as Butler sticks with her for this assignment. Already a winner when third-up, she is ideally drawn in gate five today and should prove hard to hold out here.
