Race 8:  No.1  BAKERSFIELD  ($2.70 with Neds)

Another from the Wieland camp is BAKERSFIELD who hasn’t put a foot wrong since transferring from the Victorian stables of Clayton Douglas and is more than capable of claiming victory here today. Last start, the Capitalist gelding came off a good win in Class 1 company at Townsville when he faced a BM55 Hcp over 1200m at Innisfail. Drawn wide that day (9 of 10), Jason Taylor pushed him forward and using up a lot of fuel, finally found the front. He looked home at the 200m mark but was grabbed by Lacey Morrison on Boomed who got the bob-in right on the line. Up in class today, he carries 3kgs less and has Graham Kliese in the saddle for this assignment. All five podium finishes have come since arriving in the north and he looks set here to add another victory to his resume today.

Race 7:  No.2  MAZZARATTI  ($4 with bet365)

The Fred Wieland-trained MAZZARATTI has finished top-four at his past five starts and his consistency can continue here with a win today in this contest. Coming off his maiden win in Townsville two starts back, the Snitzel gelding lined-up in a Class 1 Hcp over 900m at Innisfail where he was trapped three-wide without cover and did well to finish fourth that day. Carrying 60.5kgs, the extra 3.5kgs he had and from his maiden win took its toll but he was only beaten just over a length on the line. He gets all the favours today drawing gate one where he maps to be just behind the speed, possibly box-seating on settling. Saving ground from there and a clear run to the line, he will take beating here.

Race 3:  No.3  ROUGH CUT JEWEL  ($4.20 with Ladbrokes)

Local galloper ROUGH CUT JEWEL is in good touch of late and ticks all the important boxes today that suggest he can take this contest out. Last start, the Whittington gelding had Graham Kliese aboard for the first time when he beat all but one home in a BM65 Hcp over 1200m at Townsville. Back on home soil today, Kliese makes the trip north to pilot the six-year-old again where he gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to settle just off the speed with cover. His Cannon Park record speaks for itself where 17 starts have resulted in four wins and seven minor placings. With a clear run to the line today, he should prove hard to hold out.
