The Kris Lees-trained VELVET HAZE is in top-shelf form this preparation and down in the weights here, looks a serious contender for the major prize in this contest. Last start, the Spieth mare led on settling then hung out on the turn and straightened in the middle of the track. Clearly headed, she fought back and managed to share the first prize cheque on the line. Ben Osmond was aboard that day and sticks her for this assignment. She takes on stronger company today but along with Osmond’s claim, she drops 2.5kgs from her last start and in great form of late, she is capable of figuring here.

Race 7:  No.4  LA BOQUERIA  ($5.50 with Ladbrokes)

Kris Lees saddles-up LA BOQUERIA here who is second-up today and will strip fitter for this challenge. Last start, the Brave Smash filly resumed off a lengthy 21 weeks in the paddock when she settled in the box seat and looming as a threat on the turn, just ran out of gas, finishing unplaced in a BM66 over 1000m at Kempsey. Koby Jennings steps up to the plate today for his first ride on the filly where she is already a winner when second-up and her only appearance here saw her take out a 1010m Maiden by 1.5 lengths that day. Fitter for that first-up run, she can give this contest a real shake today.

Race 4:  No.3  SPIELE  ($8 with Picklebet)

The Stephen Lee-trained SPIELE has legitimate excuses for his past two failures and with conditions here to suit, can turn it all around today. Two starts back, the city class gallopers had too many guns for him at Doomben while last start, he found it hard to fire when dropping back in distance and travelling wide most of the way didn’t help his chances either in a BM66 at Grafton. Plenty changes here, with former English rider, Cobi Vitler, returning for the ride after steering the Casino Prince mare to victory at Ballina three starts back. She drops back in grade today and Lee has removed the winkers and put the blinkers on for the first time. She steps-up to the mile again where she is already a winner and with all this in mind, she should be a different prospect today.
