BEST BET 🏆
Race 7: No.2 HATCHET ($2.95 with BoomBet)
The Robert Heathcote-trained HATCHET is four starts into this preparation and boasting track specialist status here, looks the one to beat. Last start, the Worthy Cause gelding came off consecutive podium finishes when he missed by a whisker to make it a hat-trick, finishing fourth in a Class 3 Plate, here over the 1350m journey. He drew the carpark that day (gate 14 of 15) and was never on the track (three-wide, no cover to the turn), and did well to finish within a length of the winner. He ran his last 600m, 7.5 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best on this line-up and posted the fastest final 400m and 200m sectionals as well. Nicely drawn today in gate three, he maps to settle better than mid-field (with cover this time) and with a clear run to the line, and Ben Thompson in the saddle, he can bring up his fourth career win in this contest.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 2: No.2 CASSIMIR ($2.60 with Ladbrokes)
The Kelly Schweida-trained CASSIMIR has landed six podium finishes from his eight career starts without winning and second-up today gets yet another chance to shake his ‘bridesmaid of the year’ tag and finally break through for a win. Last start, the Hellbent gelding made it five runner-up prizes from his past six starts when finishing second in a Maiden Plate, here over 1400m. He looked home but (yet again) was grabbed by a swooper near the line. He ran that out, 4.5 lengths slower than benchmark, the best last-start effort here. James Orman sticks with him here after sharing three second prize finishes with the three-year-old. There are shades of Tom Melbourne beginning to show with this fellow but a change of luck is now overdue with him and could it be his day here.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 4: No.2 ENCOMPASS ($3 with Bet Right)
Kelly Schweida and James Orman combine here again with ENCOMPASS who is yet to miss a top-four finish in his four race starts to date and looks well placed in this company to break the ice with a win today. Last start, the Fastnet Rock gelding came oh so close to his first victory when he beat all but one home in a Maiden Plate, here over the mile. Similar to his stablemate (Cassimir), he just keeps finding one better on the day. However, here he will be rock-hard fit after four starts now and gets another crack at shaking off the maiden monkey. Drawn well in gate six, he maps to settle mid-field (with cover) and with a trouble-free run today, he can break through for a win.
