The Gary Portelli-trained SUMO STAR has been racing in consistent, yet unlucky form but gets his chance here to break through today. Last start, the Maurice gelding made it five-straight top-three finishes this preparation when he finished third in a 1400m Maiden at Kembla Grange. That was Shaun Guymer’s first ride on the three-year-old and he sticks with him for today’s assignment. He draws well in gate seven today and maps to settle in the first half-dozen with cover. With five starts behind him this preparation, fitness won’t be an issue here as he looks set to throw down the challenge today.

Race 3:  No.3  DIAMOND BLUSH  ($5.80 with BoomBet)

The Anthony Cummings-trained DIAMOND BLUSH makes her Goulburn debut today and sporting a gear change here looks in the mix for a podium finish. Last start, the Deep Field mare failed to fire at Gosford in Class 1 company over 1200m. We go on her first-up win at Wyong where she won her maiden impressively by four lengths over 1200m. Adam Hyeronimus has the reins here for the first time where the mare gets all the favours today from gate one. She maps to be box-seating on settling and has the tongue tie fitted for the first time as well. Fitter for three runs back and a change of scenery just might do the trick today.

Race 5:  No.11  ALPINE LADY  ($15 with bet365)

Moruya-based galloper ALPINE LADY is three starts into this campaign and down in the weights here, looks a solid each-way chance in this contest. Last start, the Press Statement filly made it two-straight top-three finishes when she grabbed third prize in a Class 1 Hcp over 1460m at Queanbeyan. On a Heavy 9 that day, she came from behind to grab the last podium spot carrying a half kilo over her allotted weight. She ran the trip out, 4 lengths slower than benchmark, second only to Dancing In The Sky (who draws the car park here in gate 13). Jess Taylor returns for today’s assignment (having ridden the filly to her maiden win at Queanbeyan). Rock-hard fit after those three runs this preparation, she draws gate six and is capable of figuring in the finish today.
