Mornington Tips 21/6/2023
BEST BET 🏆 (WIN)
Race 5 No. 7 SMOKIN’ HOLLY- ($4.40)
SMOKIN’ HOLLY shapes as a solid player in Race 5 of the afternoon at Mornington. The four-year-old has been solid in her three runs this time in and drops down from a BenchMark 70 race at Sandown when 7th behind Viviane, beaten three lengths. The daughter of Exosphere is on the short back up from that assignment and was close up in her two runs prior to her latest start, with those coming on Heavy tracks at Cranbourne. Blinkers come back on and she draws ideally in barrier 2.
NEXT BEST 🥈 (WIN)
Race 3 No 3 CORTES- ($6.60)
CORTES should find this easier than a last start effort that saw his finish 10th at Flemington over the 1400m on June 3. On that occasion, the Robbie Griffiths and Matt de Kock-trained galloper botched the start before working up to fins a spot. He just faded late in the piece to finish three lengths off Brung King. At his start prior, the son of Pariah was a winner at Pakenham in Maiden grade on a Soft deck. He draws to save ground from barrier 1 and we can expect to see him featuring at the business end.
BEST VALUE 💰(EACH-WAY)
Race 1 No 9 NAUGHTY NITEMARE- ($17)
NAUGHTY NITEMARE might be worth a crack at the each-way quote in the opener. The Matthew Ellerton-trained fill has had the eight career starts without a win but produced a personal best when getting onto a Heavy track at Werribee on June 8, finishing runner-up behind Gemstar, while there was a solid gap back to 3rd. She led them up in that race over the 1100m and stuck on gamely to go 3.6 lengths slower than standard benchmark, which is the best last start figure of any horse in this race. The daughter of Into Mischief looks the likely leader and might be suited at Mornington. Her only other career placing came at the track.
