Mount Gambier Tips 28/05/2023

BEST BET 🏆

Race 7 No. 6 BEAR ARMS – ($6.50)

Local trainer Jeremy Kenny can win his hometown Cup with local mare BEAR ARMS. She meets a few who are racing below their best while coming into this race third-up and with improvement to come. Blew the cobwebs out over a mile when racing first-up in a Benchmark 70 at Ballarat. Punters then sent Bear Arms around at cricket score odds in the Casterton Cup over 1800 metres. Amy Hermann gave Bear Arms the gun run throughout as the pair settled better than midfield the fence. Bear Arms held ground to the line in what was a much deeper race than this. Teagan Voorham takes the ride now and she can help Bear Arms to go one better than her second placing to Clever Man in this race last year.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 4 No. 3 DESTINY’S REPUBLIC – ($5)

Former Mount Gambier trainer Peter Hardacre comes to his old home track with DESTINY’S REPUBLIC. His consistent sprinter generally takes a few runs to find his best; however, we’ll take on trust following his recent trial performance. Destiny’s Republic jumped sharply under Felicity Atkinson who allowed him to stride further clear prior to straightening. She asked nothing of her mount as Bristler was ridden out to claim them late. The winner of that trial has since impressed on debut when making odds-on pop Sghirripa earn his win in town. Destiny’s Republic trialled sharply enough without being flattened by his rider and should still race fresh enough for senior jock Callan Murray.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 3 No. 3 THANASI – ($8)

Jacob Opperman retains the ride of THANASI for Jamie after going close at Bordertown last start. Jacob settled Thanasi just off the leader’s back from a one-off position over the 1300 metres before pushing on prior to straightening. The pair remained in front for a long way down the straight before succumbing to Red Roof back to his inside. This would seem to be a similar type of race with Thanasi perhaps catching a few of these out of form. His most recent win came over this track and trip in a much lower grade. Thanasi followed The Ladies Man into the straight before settling down to fight it out. He just got his nose down in time to edge the other out, while leaving a gap back to the rest of the field.
