BEST BET 🏆
Race 3: No.4 EXTRA SMART ($4.60 with Unibet)
Locally-trained by John Ramsay, EXTRA SMART is third-up today and sporting a few gear changes, looks ready to pounce here. Last start, the Capitalist mare gave every indication she was nearing a win when she beat all but one home in a Class 1 Hcp over 1200m on the Beaumont track at Newcastle. She couldn’t match it with the winner that day but finished ahead of the rest. She has trialled since, finishing second in the 900m hit-out on this track. Ideally drawn in gate two today, Grant Buckley is the pilot for this assignment and with the blinkers back on and a trouble-free run, the five-year-old looks right in the thick of things here.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 7: No.8 SILVER CITY ($5.50 with Neds)
Resuming off a lengthy 21-week break today, SILVER CITY boasts a strong fresh record and after two successful trials, looks in the mix amongst this field. Last start, the Shalaa gelding ended his last campaign finishing just behind the placegetters in a BM75 Hcp over 1350m at Doomben. More recently, he has finished second (and then first), in two trials, both run on this track. Aaron Bullock has ridden the five-year-old to victory three times from his five previous rides and will be out to the same again today as he takes the reins. He has come up with a wide gate (14) and will need some luck from out there but back on home turf here, he is still a strong chance of a podium finish today.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 5: No.7 IMPERIONESS ($8.50 with Ladbrokes)
Local galloper, IMPERIONESS, is three starts into this campaign and back on home soil today, is capable of figuring here at odds. Last start, the American-bred mare came off a big win at Tamworth when she disappointed at the same track, finishing mid-field in a BM58 as the $2.90 favourite. Back on her home track today, she gets the gun-run from gate one as Jeff Penza sticks with the mare, having steered her to that Tamworth win two starts back. With a trouble-free run here, she looks a major threat to victory today at good each-way odds.
