The racing season at Caulfield is set to kick off this weekend on August 17. There’s overcast weather on the forecast, but the track is rated a Good 4. Saturday’s racing even marks the unofficial start of the Spring Weight-for-Age program and includes the much-anticipated P.B. Lawrence Stakes, a Group 2 race.

Pericles is our standout pick this Saturday, taking the track in race 7. This horse’s form has been nothing short of impressive, with convincing places across several high-calibre races. Just recently, the five-year-old gelding trained by James Cummings took home a second-place finish in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile, proving his class and competitiveness is up to the challenge. In addition, Pericles has a solid record at this distance and on Good-rated tracks. Could another victory be on the cards at the start of his spring campaign? The odds are in his favour.
Second Best Bet: Rhapsody Chic

Rhapsody Chic is hot off the podium with a recent victory at Randwick in a Benchmark 78 Handicap. The five-year-old gelding trained by the Freedman stable stole the win against an exceptional field. If that isn’t enough, Rhapsody Chic has a career-best return of 151% and is a reliable performer for punters. Well-positioned to take on the 1400m distance this Saturday, he should be right up there in the mix once again.

Race 3
Justdoit might live up to her name this weekend. The seven-year-old mare has steadily built her form, taking out a win at Flemington not long ago. Trained by Luke Oliver, she defeated a very strong field in a Benchmark 84 Handicap. Their quality was no match for her speed and drive. Some might overlook Justdoit because of her age, but age comes with experience. She could deliver lucrative returns. We’ll be watching closely.
