Best Bets For Champions Sprint at Flemington

The Champions Sprint on Champions Stakes Day is one of the leading sprint races on the spring racing calendar. The $3 million contest is open to three-year-olds and takes place over 1200 metres.

Here is a look at the best bets for the Champions Sprint and some of the supporting races on another big afternoon of racing in Victoria.

BEST BET: TENTYRIS

Champions Sprint (Race 6)

Tentyris has emerged as one of the stars of the future in the sprint division. The three-year-old colt produced a stunning performance to beat the best of his generation in the Group One Coolmore Stud last time over this course and distance. That is unlikely to be his last triumph at the highest level.

Anthony and Sam Freedman’s sprinter did not get off to the best start in the Coolmore Stud as he was bumped in the early stages of the race at Flemington. However, to his credit, rider Mark Zahra did not panic, and he eased his horse into the race, before the pair quickened away from their rivals in the final 400 metres.

Connections of Tentyris are now considering a shot at the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee stakes at Royal Ascot in 2026 with their sprinter. Australia has a great record in that race, and he could be the next to add his name to the roll of honour at the royal meeting in 2026.

Before Royal Ascot 2026, there are some important sprint races in Australia for Tentyris to contest, including the Champions Sprint on Champions Stakes Day, where he is the only three-year-old in the line-up. The rising star of the sprint division faces his toughest test yet against Joliestar and Giga Kick; however, with further improvement likely, he can overcome the more experienced horses and elevate himself as one of the best sprinters in the world.

SECOND BEST BET: BIG SWINGER

Fisher Stakes (Race 3)

Big Swinger was in excellent form at the back end of last season, winning two of his last three races. The four-year-old gelding picked up four victories across the 2024/25 campaign, shooting up the ratings to a mark of 83.

Charlotte Littlefield’s runner is now tackling Listed company, and he can take advantage of the weights in this race. He has been handed the lowest allocation of 54kg in the field, with Front Page having the highest, with 60kg on his back.

This will be Big Swinger’s first competitive action of the season so far. He has had three trials to prepare him for this contest, so expect to see him fit and at his best for his opening run of the campaign.

BEST VALUE: NATION’S CALL

Ronald McDonald House Charities Mile (BM84) (Race 2)

Sabaj is the red-hot favourite for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Mile, but he can be taken on in this handicap race with Nation’s Call, who is 2.5kg lower in the weights. Robbie Giffiths’ runner comes into this contest on the back of a triumph at Moonee Valley last month.

The son of Frankel has been handed a wide draw in barrier 15, but rider Ethan Brown should be able to tuck him into a nice position in the early stages and work his way through the field. He looks like great value in the second race on the card at Flemington.
