BEST BET: VIA SISTINA
Race 8
Former European raider Via Sistina has won two of her four races since switching to Australia. She prevailed in the Group One Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill (1800m) and then landed the Group One Winx Stakes at Randwick (1400m).
The ground was too heavy for Chris Waller’s runner on her latest appearance at this course in the Makybe Diva Stakes. She had to settle for fifth place of eight runners in the race won by Mr Brightside.
Many of Via Sistina’s best performances in Europe came over this 2000m distance, as she won the Group One Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh and was second in the Group One Prix Jean Romanet at the Deauville. On what will be better ground this time, the talented mare will appreciate this step up in trip in the Turnbull Stakes.
SECOND BEST BET: SKYBIRD
Race 10
Skybird returned to action at this course last month over 1200m. The mare came home strongly to finish second on heavy ground. The margin of defeat was just a nose. Her connections will have been pleased with that run, and they will be confident she can step up in the Rose Of Kingston Stakes.
This will be Michael Freedman’s runner’s first attempt over 1400m, but her five performances so far suggest she will improve for the extra 200m. Her breeding also indicates it should not be a problem for her.
The four-year-old has been handed barrier number 18. However, that is unlikely to be an issue, as rider Beau Mertens will most likely drop her into the back of the field in the early stages before making his challenge with 400m to go.
Best Value: Arkansaw Kid
Race 9
Arkansaw Kid is in the best form of his career this year, with two triumphs from his last three starts, including a victory at this course last month. This will be his toughest test yet, but he appears to have been underestimated in the betting.
The course and distance winner will carry top weight of 59kg in this race, but he has shown he can get the job done at this level. Take the son of Harry Angel to keep up his good run and add another success to his tally.
