BEST BET: JIMMYSSTAR
Race 9
Ciaron Maher’s sprinter Jimmysstar produced a career-best performance last month when landing the Group One Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield. He was too quick for his rivals in the 1100m race, scoring by just over a length ahead of She’s Bulletproof.
Jimmysstar was settled into the back of the field in the early stages of the Oakleigh Plate, and it turned into a masterstroke, as he flew home in the final 400m. Expect to see similar tactics in the William Reid Stakes Day.
The Oakleigh Plate winner has been drawn barrier two this time, which should not be a problem for him, as there are only nine runners in the field. Jockey Ethan Brown can get plenty of cover and decide when to push the button on his star horse. There is unlikely to be much traffic ahead of him to navigate.
Maher had four entries in this race at the noms stage, but he has decided to only run Jimmysstar in the $1 million event. That suggests strong confidence in his ability to get land the top prize in the feature.
SECOND BEST BET: TOO DARN LIZZIE
Race 7
Too Darn Lizzie has been running consistently well in 2025, but she has had to settle for one of the minor placings behind Treasurethe Moment on her last two outings. Fortunately for connections of the three-year-old filly, her rival will not line up in the Alexandra Stakes this weekend.
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s filly has been drawn in barrier nine, and that should make tactics easy for rider Craig Williams. Expect to see him dash for the front of the field from the barriers in this race.
Too Darn Lizzie has 10 runners to overcome in this 1600m contest, but she is the standout runner in the field. Take her to pick up her first victory since she scored in the Group Two Thousand Guineas Prelude at Caulfield back in October.
BEST VALUE: WROTE TO ARATAKI
Race 8
Wrote To Arataki has the most consistent form of all the runners in this year’s Sunline Stakes (1600m). She has hit the placings in all her last three starts, including when third in the Sun Matron Stakes at Flemington earlier this month. She went down by just half a length in that Group Three contest.
This is arguably the most open contest on the card at Moonee Valley, but if Wrote To Arataki continues her solid run of form, she may take some stopping from barrier five. The Tristarc Stakes winner is set for her first appearance at Moonee Valley, but it is a racecourse that should suit her.
