BEST BET: FRANCESCO GUARDI

Race 7

Francesco Guardi won the Moonee Valley Gold Cup in 2022, prevailing emphatically by just under four lengths. Since then, he has contested some of the biggest races in Australia, including the Caulfield Cup and Winx Stakes.

Chris Waller’s runner has struggled a little this year at the highest level, with his best finish coming last time out in the Turnbull Stakes when he was seventh of 16 runners. This drop down to Group Two company will make life much easier for the experienced seven-year-old.

The son of Frankel is 3kg better off than his closest rival Just Fine in this contest. In what is a return to a happy hunting ground, he can bounce back to his best and retain his crown in this race.

SECOND BEST BET: CALL TO GLORY

Race 2

With five victories from 11 starts, Call To Glory has an excellent strike rate in his career. The sprinter will be bidding to improve it further at Moonee Valley in the second race on the card when he lines up in the Sprinters Country Cup Final.

The four-year-old is the joint highest-rated runner in the field along with Grassmere Jewel. His latest triumph came at Hamilton earlier this month when he won a 10-runner contest over 1100m.

Tom Dabernig’s runner remains open to improvement, and this is a great opportunity for him to shine in the sprint division on one of the biggest nights of the year.

Best Value: Rattle And Bang

Race 8

Rattle And Bang was a long way down the field at this course (1200m) on his seasonal reappearance last month. That run can be forgiven as it was his first outing since November, so he needed it to blow off the cobwebs.

The seven-year-old has gone close to landing a handicap like this race on a couple of occasions. He was second of 10 runners at Sandown (1000m) last season, losing out to a smart horse from Matthew Ellerton’s stable. If he produces his best form here, he can outrun his odds in this competitive handicap contest.
