There are winning streaks, and then there are MT Isa winning streaks, where the same horse keeps turning up, jumping clean, landing on the bunny, and making good horses look one-paced on the dirt. Zephirine is right in that lane again in the Classic Plate, and the map gives her the chance to keep playing the same tune. The deeper you get into this meeting, the clearer the theme becomes: a lot of these races are about who controls the first 200 metres.
We’ve got four races on the card, dirt surface, and distances that reward tactical speed rather than pretty sectionals. Race-by-race: MT Isa
Race 1: Cnw Mount Isa Flyer Mdn Plate — 12:37, 1203
Instigate looks the right sort of maiden to finally get paid, because she keeps turning up, keeps holding her spot, and keeps finishing in the money without getting the photo. That form line of 4-8-2-2-3-2 says she’s not looking for excuses anymore, and in a dirt maiden I’ll take the runner who can sustain pressure over the one chasing a miracle improvement.
The draw is the one knock (gate 8), but it’s offset by the rider: Mitch Goring rides this track better than anyone on the card, and he’s the one jockey here with a proper bank of MT Isa wins. If Goring can punch across without spending all the petrol, Instigate gets her chance to control the race from a spot where the dirt can’t bite.
The danger is I’lltellyouafter from gate 1. That run of 7-4-6-3-3-3 says she’s always there, and the inside alley gives her the chance to hold the rail and make the favourite work for it.

For a class 50 handicap at Mt Isa, that’s the form line you want to be buying.
He does have to carry 60.5kg (133.3lb), and barrier 8 means Goring needs to make early decisions. But if he crosses and finds the fence without a dogfight, he turns this into a staying test at a mile rather than a dash home. Goring’s local strike is a weapon in these scenarios because he judges the dirt tempo better than most visiting riders.
Makanui is the danger because he’s the one with genuine course evidence over time: five runs at MT Isa for two wins and three placings. He’s drawn to park closer (gate 3) and make Bitterblue earn it under weight. If the pace gets messy, Makanui is the one I’d want stalking rather than leading.

The market will make this all about streaks, and I’m happy to lean into it: Zephirine is the bet because she’s the most reliable map horse in the race and she keeps winning. Her form reads 211311 and she’s also built a proper little MT Isa pattern: three runs here for two wins and a placing. That’s not enough to call her a specialist, but it is enough to trust she handles the surface and the routine.
Barrier 1 is gold on this circuit. Brooke Stower doesn’t need to get cute, she just needs to begin, hold the paint, and make the others take the long way around. The 90 day numbers back up the vibe too: eight runs for four wins and seven placings, with an average finishing position inside the top two. That’s a proper winner’s profile, not a “nice horse” profile.
The main threat is Stokomo</strong. He’s got the class and he’s tough, but he’s stuck in gate 8 and may have to do early work to find a spot. If he clears without spending, he’s the one who can make Zephirine feel it late.

Race 4: Cablemakers Classic Plate (C6) — 14:27, 1094
This is the feature betting race because it’s got two strong, different profiles that can both win, depending on who controls the first half of the race. I’m sticking with Viking Valour as the main play. He comes in off 1-26121, he’s drawn to land exactly where you want over the short sprint trip (gate 2), and he’s got enough MT Isa mileage to trust: three course runs for two wins and a placing.
The 90 day stats are sharp as well, even if it’s only three starts: he’s won twice and he’s been in the money every time. Over 1094m, that tells you he’s hitting the line, not just stealing one.
The horse you must respect is Heavenly Legend</strong. He’s won on both course visits here, and his current form (513321) says he’s turning up to win again. The sample at MT Isa is only two runs so you treat it as evidence, not a lifetime stamp, but it’s still a clear signal he acts on this dirt. If Kayla Barker can get him across from gate 6 without a street fight, he can absolutely keep the pick honest.
