Overview
Zephirine has won five of eight starts at Mount Isa and placed in seven of them, and Tanya Parry has pulled Zephirine out of the 1100m handicap later in the day to run in the opener. That tells you where the stable thinks the best chance is, and it is where these Mt Isa racing tips start.
Monday’s card is seven races on the dirt, run from 11:12AM to 2:47PM local time, with distances from 900m to 1450m. Parry trains the bulk of the field and has 279 starters at this track, so a lot of the day is about reading which runners the stable wants. Mitch Goring is the rider with the strongest record here, and Polly Hoffa in the last looks the most reliable horse on the card. Bookmakers had not opened markets on the meeting when this was written, so there are no prices below rather than guesses. Read on for every race, the quaddie view and where the money goes.
Mt Isa: the setup
This is a small, tight colony. Three trainers have runners on the card and most of the horses have raced here several times, so for once the course form is deep enough to lean on. Scratchings have already trimmed Race 1 to four runners and taken Dark Harmony out of Race 6, and several of Parry’s runners are still waiting on a confirmed rider.
The dirt rewards horses that have handled it before, and the table below shows plenty of them. Polly Hoffa has placed in 12 of 13 starts on this surface, which is about as close to a sure thing as country racing gets.
Horses with five or more Mt Isa starts
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polly Hoffa | 13 | 3 | 12 | 23% | 92% |

| Napoleon Strike | 12 | 4 | 6 | 33% | 50% |
| Last Ditch Effort | 14 | 3 | 8 | 21% | 57% |
| The Wellian | 6 | 1 | 5 | 17% | 83% |

| Makanui | 6 | 2 | 3 | 33% | 50% |

| Mitch Goring | 53 | 17 | 34 | 32% | 64% |
| Brooke Stower | 52 | 12 | 30 | 23% | 58% |
| D Sparks | 24 | 2 | 11 | 8% | 46% |

| Tanya Parry | 279 | 44 | 127 | 16% | 46% |
| MS S Royes | 67 | 10 | 33 | 15% | 49% |
| Bevan Johnson | 36 | 10 | 17 | 28% | 47% |
Bevan Johnson is the one to notice. He has far fewer runners than Parry but wins with more than a quarter of them, and he has four starters across the card today.

Mt Isa race-by-race
Race 1: Trevor Morris Builders (Bm65), 11:12AM, 1450m
Zephirine was also entered for the 1100m handicap at 12:57PM, and Parry has scratched it from that one to keep it here. With Howse and Tell Us Toll also out, Zephirine meets three rivals on a track it has made its own. Five wins from eight starts at the track is real course form, and the form has held up lately with two wins and three placings from four runs in the last three months. Hayley Saunders rides, and Saunders has won four of 12 rides for Parry here.
Indefinite is the danger on numbers alone, a placegetter twice from four recent starts without winning. Regal Judgement has won both of its runs at Mt Isa for Bevan Johnson and should not be dismissed, but its recent form has cooled to one win from six. Dark Harmony is the stablemate and has placed in five of six recent starts, so it is the exacta partner.
Win bet on Zephirine, with a small exacta of Zephirine over Dark Harmony and Regal Judgement.
Race 2: Sportsbet (Bm55), 11:47AM, 1450m
Does Foxy Artist‘s recent lift hold up against horses with more course runs? The last three starts read 1, 1, 3, and Foxy Artist has placed in both visits to Mt Isa, winning one. Saunders rides from barrier 1, which should let the horse sit on the speed without being pushed. Two wins from seven runs in the last three months is solid for this grade.
Makanui is the one to beat her. The Royes runner has won twice from six starts here and placed in five of his last eight runs anywhere, so he never goes far from the frame. The Wellian is the each-way type: one win but five placings from six starts on this track, and Brooke Stower rides.
Win on Foxy Artist, saver on Makanui, and The Wellian each-way if you want a cheap place bet.
Race 3: Qh20 Mdn Plate, 12:22PM, 1100m
Hard to have a confident view in a nine-runner maiden where four of Parry’s entries still have no rider listed. Oracle Of Omaha ran second on his one start in the last three months, and Stower rides. It’s A Power has placed twice from three recent runs and gets Goring, who wins almost a third of his rides at Mt Isa. That booking tips the balance slightly.
Forward Ho has also placed twice from three recent starts and draws barrier 2, so it is a genuine danger if a rider is confirmed. Euphoric Miss placed on its only course start.
Small each-way on It’s A Power. This is a watch race more than a betting race.
Race 4: Sportsbet Hcp, 12:57PM, 1100m
This is where the value sits. With Zephirine scratched, the race is wide open, and Napoleon Strike is one of the best course performers on the card: four wins from 12 starts at Mt Isa and six placings. It has not won in four runs in the last three months, but it placed in two of them, and the drop back to 1100m on a track it knows suits. Goring takes the ride, and he and Parry have 18 placings from 27 runs together here.
Pennypacker is the obvious danger for the Royes stable. Its course record is a win and three placings from five, but it finished fifth on its only recent start. Last Ditch Effort has three wins and eight placings from 14 starts here and is the steady quinella option once a rider is named.
Win on Napoleon Strike, with a saver on Last Ditch Effort.
Race 5: Cmw Electrical Hcp (C1), 1:34PM, 1200m
Two different profiles here. Daybreak Warrior is the three-year-old on the rise, winning one of its two recent starts, and Saunders rides from barrier 7. Champonnet is the more exposed type, placing on its only course run but without a win in four recent starts, two of them placings. Goring rides it.
The young horse has the upside and gets the vote. Holy Holy Holy is the danger for Bevan Johnson, placed on its only Mt Isa start and in three of its last five runs, from barrier 3.
Win on Daybreak Warrior, with Holy Holy Holy the saver.
Race 6: Sportsbet (Bm60), 2:12PM, 1200m
Johnson’s runners are worth a look on this card, and Ricallen gives him his best chance. The four-year-old won one of its two starts at Mt Isa and has won twice from five runs in the last three months. Amie Meissner rides from barrier 1.
Red Code is the main threat. It won one of its two course starts and one of two recent runs, and Stower rides. Getty is the place-only type, placing in four of its last five runs without winning. Allezizzy has three wins from nine starts here, but it is drawn in the middle and has won only once in its last seven runs.
Win on Ricallen, saver on Red Code, Getty in the exotics.
Race 7: City & Country Electrical (Bm50), 2:47PM, 900m
Polly Hoffa is the most reliable horse at the meeting. Thirteen starts at Mt Isa for three wins and 12 placings, and the current form is even better: two wins and a placing from three runs in the last three months. The 900m sprint suits a horse that knows how to get into position quickly, and Stower stays on.
Lilii Borea is the danger. Lilii Borea has placed in all four starts here, winning one, and draws barrier 1 for Saunders. Without has placed in two of its last four runs for Royes, and Vonk places two-thirds of the time on this track without winning often.
Polly Hoffa to win, and the anchor for the quaddie.

Where the money goes
NAP: Zephirine (Race 1, 11:12AM). Parry chose this race over the 1100m handicap, and Zephirine has already won five times on this track.
Value: Napoleon Strike (Race 4, 12:57PM). Four course wins and Goring aboard in a race that lost its best horse to a scratching. Markets were not open when this was written, so check the price before you bet.
Banker: Polly Hoffa (Race 7, 2:47PM). Twelve placings from 13 starts here make it the safest leg for a multi, and it anchors a quaddie over Races 4 to 7.
Each-way: The Wellian (Race 2, 11:47AM). Five placings from six Mt Isa starts, and Stower rides.
Course angle: Bevan Johnson. He wins with more than a quarter of his runners here, and Ricallen in Race 6 and Regal Judgement in Race 1 both come from his stable.
If Daybreak Warrior wins Race 5 at three, Parry has another horse who could be winning Mt Isa races for a long time.
