Overview
Aftermath arrives at Ararat on the back of two straight wins, and the Gold Cup gives L J Meech the chance to make it three for the P A Preusker stable. That is the race the whole card hangs off, and it is a genuine contest: Nothingelsematters also won last start, and Tikemyson has two wins from its last five.
Eight races on a Good to Soft turf surface, starting with a 4374m hurdle at 1:30PM and finishing with the Mixx FM (Bm66) at 5:25PM. These Ararat racing tips cover every race, with a clear play in each, a value angle in the jumps race and a quaddie built around the back half of the card. Course form is thin across the fields, so most of the weight here sits on recent runs, the stables and the riders who know the track.
Reading the Ararat card
Limited course form across today’s fields. Only six of the runners have been to Ararat before, and none more than twice. My Uncle Did It is the standout: a win and a placing from its two visits. Fire Type was second on its only start here.
The riders tell a clearer story. L J Meech has seven rides on the card and is the jockey to follow at this track, with four wins from 14 rides and a place in nine of them.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| L J Meech | 14 | 4 | 9 | 28.6 | 64.3 |
| Tom Madden | 7 | 2 | 4 | 28.6 | 57.1 |
| D Yendall | 13 | 1 | 6 | 7.7 | 46.2 |
| Teodore Nugent | 10 | 0 | 4 | 0.0 | 40.0 |
| Neil Farley | 6 | 1 | 1 | 16.7 | 16.7 |
| Jack Hill | 14 | 1 | 2 | 7.1 | 14.3 |
On the training side, Tom Dabernig has the record that jumps off the page: four winners from eight runners at Ararat. He has one runner today.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tom Dabernig | 8 | 4 | 5 | 50.0 | 62.5 |
| Aaron Purcell | 5 | 1 | 4 | 20.0 | 80.0 |
| Symon Wilde | 5 | 1 | 4 | 20.0 | 80.0 |
| M J Williams | 5 | 0 | 3 | 0.0 | 60.0 |
| P A Preusker | 12 | 0 | 3 | 0.0 | 25.0 |
| C Maher | 11 | 0 | 2 | 0.0 | 18.2 |
Ben, Will & JD Hayes have only had four runners here, but all four finished in the placings. They send seven today, so that small sample is worth keeping in the back of your mind.

Ararat race-by-race tips
Race 1: Ararat Rsl Sir Brudenell White Hwt (Bm70), 1:30PM, 4374m
Legend Beast carries top weight, and it has earned it. The Hayes jumper won its last start after a second the time before, and the market has it on top at $4.00 with Bet Right. Over 4374m on a softish surface the one that is jumping and staying in form is the one to be with, and T Ryan has a horse that is doing both. The wide gate (12) matters less over this trip than it would on the flat.
Eye For An Eye ($4.80 with Unibet) is the one the market rates as the danger, but it has not run in the first three in four starts over the last 90 days, and that makes it short enough. The better value sits with Black Rutile at $13.00 with Bet Right. Its last four runs read 2-4-2-4, it has averaged a third-placed finish over that stretch, and it draws barrier 2.
Win bet on Legend Beast. Small each-way on Black Rutile.
Race 2: Gorst Rural Mdn Plate, 2:00PM, 1422m
Does Fire Type finally convert? It has been placed in four of six starts without saluting, but one of those placings was a second here at Ararat on its only visit, and Symon Wilde has placed four of his five runners at this course. Jack Hill rides from barrier 4, and $3.90 with Unibet is a fair price for a maiden that keeps running into the money.
Model Gigi ($4.40 with Bet Right) is the danger. It was second three runs back and has finished fifth in each of its two starts since, so it needs to lift, but this is a soft maiden. Incoherent ran second on debut for the Hayes stable before a seventh, and the stable’s place record here keeps it in the frame.
Win bet on Fire Type, with Model Gigi as the saver.
Race 3: Ararat Rural City Council Mdn Plate, 2:35PM, 1203m
The market has made up its mind. General Blu is $1.50 with Unibet after a second on debut and a fifth last start, and it has L J Meech on board from barrier 3. The fifth was a step back, but the price tells you the stable expects it to improve, and Meech places in nearly two of every three rides at this track. In a field this light on form, that is enough.
The one to watch is Dream For Free, a first starter from Ben, Will & JD Hayes with B Rawiller riding, at $8.00 with Unibet. Unraced horses from a stable with that place record here are always worth a second look. At the odds General Blu is a multi leg rather than a straight bet.
Banker for multis. Not one to bet on its own at $1.50.
Race 4: Midland Irrigation (Bm66), 3:10PM, 1203m
Tom Dabernig does not waste trips to Ararat. Four winners from eight runners at the course is a strike rate every punter should respect, and Masked Marauder is his only runner today. It won two starts back before a seventh last time, so the form is a little up and down, but barrier 2 and D M Parker give it every chance to sit handy and kick.
Restless Wind is the danger. The Andrew Bobbin runner has a pattern of win, third, win, third over her last four, and L J Meech rides. Midnight Devil has been third in each of its last two and finished in the first three in three of four runs over the last 90 days, without winning, so it is the each-way type rather than the winner.
No live prices yet. Win bet on Masked Marauder when the market opens, with Restless Wind in the exacta.
Race 5: Ame Systems Mdn Plate, 3:45PM, 1750m
Two starts, two seconds. Vulcana has collected $19,350 in prize money without winning, which tells you the class of the races it has been running placings in. The C Maher runner steps up to 1750m from barrier 2 with Jett Stanley riding, and the inside draw means it can hold a spot without using too much petrol early.
Selita’s Fury was second on its only start and is the obvious threat. Pneuma is the interesting outsider: Peter Jaques has had one runner at Ararat and won with it, and Neil Farley rides. Almorina was second last start for Symon Wilde with L J Meech in the saddle and rounds out the chances.
Win bet on Vulcana. This is the first leg of the quaddie, and it is a single for me.
Race 6: Bet365 Ararat Gold Cup, 4:15PM, 2406m
Aftermath is the horse in form. Two wins in a row, a second before that, and a 90-day record of two wins from six starts with $61,450 in the bank. L J Meech and P A Preusker have teamed up 18 times for four wins, the latest on 31 October, and the stable sends this one with confidence. Joint top weight is the knock, and from barrier 9 Meech will need to find cover early over 2406m.
Nothingelsematters is the clear danger, and it gets a big weight advantage. It won last start, won two runs before that, and has banked $65,850 from six starts in the last 90 days, more than anything else in the race. Luke Cartwright draws barrier 5. If Aftermath has to work at any stage, the light weight could be the difference over the last 200m.
Tikemyson has won two of five in the last 90 days but was fifth last start. Saveadateforme ran second last time after a win and gets in light too. Budjik Boy, the second Preusker runner, has run third, fifth and fourth in its last three.
Win bet on Aftermath, with a saver on Nothingelsematters. Take both in the quaddie.
Race 7: Programmed Ararat Bowl, 4:50PM, 1422m
Buzitup and Miss Mahjong have different profiles and both have claims. Buzitup won its last start, its only run in the last 90 days, and that win was worth $19,250. It gets in near the bottom of the weights with Shayleigh Ingelse riding from barrier 8.
Miss Mahjong has finished in the first three in all three runs over the last 90 days, including seconds in the last two. It does not win often, but it rarely runs a bad race, and that makes it the each-way bet of the day. The wide draw (11) is the concern. Laa de Sha was second last start for the Hayes stable and is the third chance.
Win bet on Buzitup, each-way on Miss Mahjong. Both go in the quaddie.
Race 8: Mixx FM (Bm66), 5:25PM, 1750m
My Uncle Did It is the only horse on the card with a real Ararat record: a win and a placing from two visits. It flopped last start after a second and a third, so there is a question to answer, but the course suits it. Jack Hill and Symon Wilde have teamed up 46 times for nine wins, and barrier 4 is ideal.
Carnival Riches is the danger. It was second last start after a win, it has averaged better than third over its last three runs, and it gets in light with L J Meech riding from barrier 1. On form alone it is right there. Sinister Sauce won two starts back and is the each-way roughie.
Win bet on My Uncle Did It, with Carnival Riches in the quaddie as cover.

Where the money goes
NAP: Aftermath (Race 6, 4:15PM). Three wins in a row is the target, and the Meech and Preusker partnership is in form after a win together on 31 October. No live price yet.
Value: Black Rutile (Race 1, 1:30PM). $13.00 with Bet Right for a jumper that has run second in two of its last four. The inside draw helps, and it only needs to repeat to pay a place.
Banker: General Blu (Race 3, 2:35PM). $1.50 with Unibet. The price is short, but in a maiden this weak it is the safest leg on the card.
Each-way: Miss Mahjong (Race 7, 4:50PM). Three runs in the last 90 days, three finishes in the first three. That is the profile you want for a place bet.
Course angle: L J Meech. Seven rides today and a place in nine of 14 rides at Ararat. Meech’s runners deserve a look in every race she rides.
Quaddie (Races 5 to 8): Vulcana / Aftermath, Nothingelsematters / Buzitup, Miss Mahjong / My Uncle Did It, Carnival Riches.
If Tom Dabernig keeps up four winners from eight runners here, his Ararat entries will be worth checking every time the fields come out.
